Webpage translation support and a new panel design – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 2238.3
-
Nice to see many UI effects we've been modding to achieve are making their way into the browser.
Little issue with the speed dials though, if you select to display title on hover, the first dial will always show the title because it is being selected by default.
I think the panel icons need to be bigger, especially if you are going to be using stroke ones instead of fill ones. They should be more in line with the other icons, actually there is a lack of consistency with the icons in general
I'm not a fan at all of adding web panels by default. I've never used them since, unlike tabs, they do not hibernate when not in use.
Last thing, I prefer the speed dial background image selection under the
Start Page
tab, it makes more sense there since they are not (yet?) linked to themes in any way. Thanks for the changes though

Gonna be honest - I'm not going to read the 7 pages of comments which have already appeared before I even knew there was a new snapshot(!) but I'm quite liking the UI refresh - couple of points I want to note though:
-
There's no longer much separation between the panel bar and the panels (I think I see the hint of some difference in blur with opacity at minimum, but using one of the "abstract" background images it's virtually nothing). This is the kind of "floating element soup" which I hate in "modern" software and webpages. Please allow it to be made more pronounced with a subtle line or stronger contrasting effects.
-
A transparent tab bar combined with a semi-transparent panel looks odd. Would be more cohesive if both have matching transparency and blur effects... (Edit: forgot to mention that I have tab bar on the bottom - so before now the bar and panel area formed a frame around the content but now they look separate and disjointed - especially if I choose a brighter background image.)
-
I notice new panels have appeared (help and forum)... I suppose this is trying to kick dumb users into using panels more... ha ha!

Well if the average user sees two new Vivaldi logos on his panel bar and clicks them, he will (probably) think "hey, how come I'm seeing webpages in there now?" and will either explore further (yay!) or delete the new panels (boo!).
(Unless these were there before and I forgot about it...)

Looks nice on first glance!
Mail panel: this was probably the same before this build but I just noticed it now with the design change: collapsed categories (custom folders/filters/mailing lists/...) should show somehow that they are collapsed, right now they just look like they are empty.
-
I'm asking more as to why you think web panels that waste resources when not in use are a good thing that dumb users should get on board with?
Not a hostile question, just curious in case I am missing something
-
Yes... but no! I'm not fond of these design changes at all.
I miss the tab bar's background image.
The top of the Speed Dial background image in the tab bar make it look like an ugly Firefox Theme. And the incomplete background image in the Speed Dial tab consequently looks ugly too.
Moreover, I think that the side panel look and feel lacks contrast. For example, the bottom on Download's and Bokmark's side panels.

@asterx: Vivaldi can't just use deepl without permission/partnership, plus deepl doesn't (yet) translate many non european (in particular asian) languages.
I agree that deepl is extremely good for german-english. -
using translation on https://www.faz.net/aktuell/ only translates the first part of the page, below everything stays in german.

This is the price of using mods [...] be prepared to fix the stuff you mod when it breaks.
Reason I try not overboard with mods, now. ^^,
@Ruarí mmh... not a good start
(No mods on this standalone)
Is the worst thing happened today. So probably I shouldn't complain too much =3

Great new design! I've been emulating it for a while even without the official settings. Looking forward to seeing it finished, assuming it's not.
I just find it weird that Fade Foreground Colors does nothing if you enable Transparent Tab Bar. The whole point of Fade Foreground Colors is to help identify background windows, but with the transparent tab bar, it loses that ability.Turns out it only affects the accent color regardless of whether it is applied to the window or not. Can we get it for transparent tabs too, please?
BTW has General>Startup with>Lazy Load>Always Load Pinned Tabs been broken for anyone else since stable?
I have it disabled, but pinned tabs still always load. If it's not a known issue, I'll report it tomorrow. -
So if i understand it correctly,a custom image will no longer be able to be used in the tab bar window...?...is that correct?
-
Hello,
Just installed the latest snapshot. Now on start-up I only see agrey page with the "V" and the title bar, but nothing else. I am on Kubuntu 21.04, which may be the culprit, seeing as the new snapshot works fine on Debian Buster 10.8. -
So it appears. Is this permanent or will it return?
-
@infosrefanvlad I don't use snapshot versions but i am getting mixed messages as to whether a custom tab bar image can be used or not..i do hope it is still an option.
-
@Priest72 It appears to no longer be an option.
Yet I don't think the Vivaldi devs would remove a feature. It has to be temporary (still asked though because I am unsure and a bit worried too).
-
Blend Window Accent color also appears to be gone.
Temporary? I mean, I have trouble seeing my status bar buttons with tabs at the bottom now. I need some degree of blending with my accent color, configurable preferably (in the past I had to wash out my tab bar image specifically to blend well with the colors; it would be almost required to have that given I can no longer set a separate image). Also panels do have blending. -
I don't know how you do it. Features upon features upon features while fielding several Chromium updates a month while thinking about the 4-week update cycle (maybe 8!) to come while molten lava pours through the lobby.

Did I say that?
Nope.
In fact I never use panels... I was just saying why I thought Vivaldi might have added them.
-
@infosrefanvlad i fear it is a permanent option.I see no reason for the devs to temporarily remove the feature.
