Solved Ctrl-Q to quit doesn't ask for confirmation
-
Hi everyone,
My Vivaldi browser is set to "Show Exit Confirmation Dialog" and when I click the Close button in the top-right of the window, the dialog correctly appears.
Earlier today, I was typing something and mistakenly pressed Ctrl-Q (I was correcting something with Ctrl-Backspace and held Ctrl in slightly too long!). Vivaldi immediately quit without asking for confirmation. I've tried this again and been able to replicate it. Is this intentional or a bug/oversight? Is there a way to always ask for confirmation before quitting the program?
I don't know if this is specific to Linux, but I'm posting here because I'm running under Debian 10 and KDE Plasma.

This issue has been fixed in today's release of Vivaldi 6.0.

@abigailking I'm running Debian 10 with TDE (Trinity Desktop Environment) and Vivaldi Snapshot. Confirming CTRL-Q will exit Vivaldi without prompting.
In Settings, search for EXIT. There is a box to show exit confirmation dialog. In Vivaldi stable, I am prompted to exit when selecting File/Quit, I have not used CTRL-Q. This box is checked.
In Vivaldi Snapshot, this box is also checked, yet CTRL-Q still exits without prompting. I will file a bug report pertaining to Snapshot.

@edwardp Thank you for filing this. Just to confirm that I'm using the stable channel:
3.6.2165.40 (Stable channel) (64-bit)
and this problem exists here also.
-
@abigailking Yes. Confirming this issue with the current Vivaldi Stable as well. I will update my bug report.

This is the way it is designed to work.
If confirm exit is enabled closing the last window will warn you. If confirm window close is enabled then closing additional windows will also warn you.
If you select the File menu, Exit option or use a shortcut to exit, no warning is required.
If you find that Ctrl+Q is too easy to hit by accident, change the shortcut to Ctrl+Shift+Q or remove it. There is no default shortcut for Exit.
Close Window and Exit are two different commands. Hitting the X button = Close Window

@Pesala I'll wait and see what they want to do with the bug report. I provided this URL.
It's possible that they might decide to provide the confirmation dialogue on FIle/Quit/CTRL-Q.
-
@Pesala Thank you! I didn't realise that there was a setting to remove the keyboard shortcut for Quit. I've gone in and removed a few unwanted ones. This resolves my issue.

ctrl Q should exit the app without confirming according to the language we usually follow in other apps. But browser is an exception when it can happen by mistake since key X is next to key Q and key X is very frequently used to close tabs. And there's a very big cost to pay.
ctrl Q does nothing in Chromium, and it can show confirmation dialog in Firefox [but that's still not default].
My wish: better if does nothing but at least show confirmation dialog by default, by default is a must. -

I absolutely agree with you and would like to support you on that! There must be an option to make Ctrl+Q ask for confirmation. But, yeah, clearing the shortcut also does the job for me.

@abigailking See Settings, Tabs:
Keep Window Open when Last Tab is Closed -
@Pesala
I have this enabled but does not work. -
@mib2berlin It works fine for what it was designed to do โ do not close window when last tab is closed.
File, exit without any confirmation, is good design. We really do not need a warning for this.
If they try to make it idiot-proof, it will just result in extra special idiots.

As reported in the blog thread, it's not. Still no dialog.
-
@edwardp Tested with Debian 11.6 KDE Plasma: after Ctrl+Q as shortcut Vivaldi asks to close window, but with main menu โ Exit does not ask.
Report issue to Vivaldi bug tracker. Once that is done, share the bug number (beginning with VB-). Thanks for helping us making Vivaldi better.

@DoctorG VB-96731
Also referenced my previous bug (VB-77300) in the report.
The exit dialog on CTRL-Q, began to appear after exiting and restarting Vivaldi a few times.
-
@edwardp I linked VB-96731 to VB-77300, updated for 6.x, bug was confirmed.

@DoctorG Thank you.
