Vivaldi takes tabs to the next level, literally

Great work!
Quick suggestion: add a tabs-subcontainer-visible tag to the top of the body class when a layered tab is visible, this way we can make better extensions and modifications.
I've included a few more details, on the tab feature suggestions here.
-
Great, but when the address bar is hidden some extensions don't work (https://eloquent.works for example). Right now I have to keep it visible just for that, and it consuming space unnecessarily since I always use the shortcut to focus it
-
@varsha I wish I had better news. But the longer I try to use the tabs in a 2nd level, I end up having to forcefully shut Vivaldi down, using Process Explorer, and restarting the browser.
When is Vivaldi sent to lunch, never to return? When shutting down just a few multiple tabs in the 2nd level. Today I did it with only 3 tabs. Once I tried, CPU on my quad processor went to about 24%, and stayed above 14% for more than 5 minutes, then I gave up and restarted Vivaldi. Next time, it was 5 tabs that I shut down. Then, I tried 8. Each time, I couldn't regain focus or change tabs. At the time, I wasn't out of physical memory, so it wasn't in some swap mode. [[ My linefeeds /proofing are on
now in all my posts ]]
It seemed impossible to just wait, or try to regain control. I'd be happy to help test / troubleshoot what's going on, if asked.

Hi, I have 3 bugs since 3.5 (3.6 didn't fix it):
- when I watch a video (for example on YouTube) and press the full screen button, and then press it again, the video goes back to normal but Vivaldi is still in full screen mode and I have to press F11.
- the panel with notes, download etc. disappears randomly and I have to press F4 to show it again.
- the F2 "console" behavior has changed, when typing in a phrase and hitting Enter the console prioritizes matches found in open tabs (and even closed tab history) before the search engine. Before 3.5 search had priority. Maybe it is something that should be possible to set in the settings?

Did you create posts or bug reports about them?
- when I watch a video (for example on YouTube) and press the full screen button, and then press it again, the video goes back to normal but Vivaldi is still in full screen mode and I have to press F11.
Strange, see https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/56317/when-exiting-fullscreen-on-videos-vivaldi-browser-also-exits-out-of-fullscreen
- the panel with notes, download etc. disappears randomly and I have to press F4 to show it again.
Could this be a sync problem?
If not, create a new thread to discuss it.- the F2 "console" behavior has changed, when typing in a phrase and hitting Enter the console prioritizes matches found in open tabs (and even closed tab history) before the search engine. Before 3.5 search had priority. Maybe it is something that should be possible to set in the settings?
Does this suggestion (for Mac) help https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/55682/3-5-2115-87-new-quick-commands-bug-introduced-with-vivaldi-for-os-x

Looks great but please don't take away the Window Panel.
-
@ergusto There is no suggestion that would ever happen.

"Two-Level Tab Stacks" is the great feature, actually! Thanks a lot for it.
But there some problems/inconsistencies:-
If I want to open all bookmarks from some Bookmark Folder in new tabs and I just have the active Tab Stack I would expect that such tabs should be opened in this active Tab Stack as its "member tabs" (i.e. at the second level). Unfortunately the folder context menu's items "Open in New Tab" and "Open in Background Tab" open these bookmarks as new tabs, i.e. at the first level.
So either it should be fixed or there should be added other context menu's items e.g. "Open in New Tab in Active Stack" and "Open in Background Tab in Active Stack". -
There is feature for "auto-creation" of new Tab Stack: "New Tab Position > As Tab Stack with Related Tab". If I open some link (at the page in tab which is not a member of any stack) using e.g. "Open in Background Tab", it opens in new tab and a new stack is created - that's great! But if I again open another link in that way the new tab is created as "member tab" (i.e. at the second level - that's OK) but as a last tab in active stack. It's the same in case of any other previously existing Tab Stacks - if "New Tab Position > As Tab Stack with Related Tab" option is enabled any newly created tab from link is placed as the last tab. Well I can use the "New Tab Position > After Active Tab" option, but it disables the "auto-creation" feature of new Tab Stack.
So I think that "As Tab Stack with Related Tab" option shouldn't be mutually exclusive with the "After Active Tab" one as it prevents to use both options together. -
In case of open link in Background Tab in active Tab Stack (as its "member tab", i.e. at the second level) the Unread Indicators (small triangles in right top corner of newly created tabs) don't appear at all so it's quite confusing.

I'm very happy about these changes, as a user with many tabs. The only very small con I noticed, it's not easy to drag a tab from one stack directly to another stack. Thanks for the best chromium browser in existence.
-
@SergejB you could slightly increase the UI size. Often helps.
-
@eggcorn: now for cascading tab windows...

Hi, Vivaldi developers - I'm disappointed how slowly scrolls working on page when I open new tab to background. It completely freeze current tab/page for about 1 - 2 seconds. I was able to implement V7 Tabs extension from Opera to Vivaldi sidebar, but this scrolling fault stops me from switch to Vivaldi
Why the current tab is freezing even if the new tab is launched in new process??
-
Addition - It not freezes if the page is open to foreground tab and quickly switched back, so this is some weird Vivaldi bug.
-
Addition 2: It happens when I open link on this page:
https://www.codeproject.com/KB/IP/Addition 3: another problem - problem to close preview popup on Facebook, must click few times to close it. Working properly with ESC button.
Addition 4: can't edit comment here on Vivaldi, stuck on saving with some error.
I don't understand this amount of problems on Vivaldi.
-
@guigirl The make/break on being able to edit posts is reputation rather than longevity or activity.

Addition 2: It happens when I open link on this page:
https://www.codeproject.com/KB/IP/Works fine for me too - although the first page takes a while to fully load.
Note: I tested opening in background before and after loading of the IP page completed.Addition 4: can't edit comment here on Vivaldi, stuck on saving with some error.
I believe that depends on your "reputation points".
Edit: As @Ayespy saidI gave you another two as I believe you need at least three (and you have been here a while).
-
@TbGbe I gave another.

That's awesome! Using stacked tabs is so much easier thanks to 2 level tab bar.
One note though: using vertical tab bar, the tab bar width is limited to a (hardcoded) 260 pix limit. This is too narrow to properly display 2 columns of tabs.
A post asking for a wider vertical tab bar has 27 votes already. -

[I've not bothered looking for it, so this is purely rhetorical] - in comparison i wonder how many votes there'll be for V to have a full-feature TST vertical tabs panel, with ~"infinite" nesting capability,
Answer: the TST feature request currently has 96 votes (my years old vote included).
But I expect the effort to code and test TST is much much higher than simply bumping the maximum width of vertical tab bar.
Furthermore, TST with a narrow vertical tab bar could easilly get too narrow after some few nesting levels...So incresing vertical tar bar width seems to me it is a must anyway.
