Make the difference, don´t ask me for my number phone
-
Just don´t be as the others! make the difference, I don´t share with you nor with anymore personal data, I disagree with you, ask me for sensible data if i want to use your mail, no, no, no again. Just Brave and Tor don´t really ask for my personal data. What! Would you grow my "suspicacia"??? Be care with that! I prefer not use you mail, Is that your relay out goal? (sic).

Hi,
At the beginning, Vivaldi allowed the access to all its services without it.
The increasing of SPAM forced the decision to use an authentication method to keep those behaviours away.
Since then, Mail and Blog are tied up to a Phone Number verification.[Vivaldi Official Statements]
-
@PepeCabron See this thread from when it was first introduced.
-
@PepeCabron ,to use the forum and sync, you only need your nickname and your email for registration, it only requires the 2FA with your phone number, if you want to use also Vivaldi's blog and email as well. No private data is needed more than this.
-
-
I give a recovery mail address, why do I need a phone number? if I have no phone I'm not a valid user???
dear stupids, go out of your office and ask everyone you see... and you will meet a "Persona Non Grata", person without a mobil, a person who want a email address...
sorry to see that Vivaldi is a "number crawler"... what do you do with this additionally superfluous information? normaly a data protection rule is: don't crawl data you do not need, so you do not need to protect against other crawlers!
cheers... and please close this account or give it free without phone number!
-
@gabueh It is necessary to reduce the number of spammers.
You can delete your own account from your profile, but you cannot post on the forums without an account.
If all you want is a free email address, I am sure there are plenty of alternatives.
Vivaldi respects your privacy. You phone # is only used to confirm that you are not a spammer.
-
@pesala you are my friend! "You phone # is only used to confirm that you are not a spammer." please stop kidding me! if this is the latest and best technology to detect and filter out spammers, then I feel sorry for the IT industry!
btw: I am not the last and only one who criticizes this!
@vivaldi-team if the phone number is mandatory, then this input field should be marked as "required" in the first mask, when creating the account. and not later, when you think you are ready and you can start.
everyone always talks about progressive and free... but we are creating more and more inconvenient processes for no reason, to bully others. (at this point Google is much more accurate because of collecting mobile numbers!)
cheers
personal opinion: for an "Ambassador" it don't seem to know much about the IT business, but you don't need to, you just have to write a lot and explain to the world this is the best.
-
@gabueh Perhaps you searched and read the announcement thread.
Policy decisions are made by the Vivaldi Team, not by us volunteers.
-
@pesala so i want to ask why these volunteers want to comment on everything... when they can't do anything? it's like spam, burned time.
so the final question is: why do we fight spam (with bad tools), but allow volunteers who can't change nothing?
@vivaldi-team @Team_Vivaldi why are millions locked out who could use a mail account and deserve a good one, but don't have a mobile phone?
fine, fight spam, but please with better tools. and make it simple/fair to privacy, with as little as necessary data required. -
@gabueh There are volunteers because there is a tiny team (two community admins and 22 or so developers) with a relatively huge workload. The volunteers are here to help advise and guide users - not to fix things.
The spam-fighting tools are those provided by the software on which the forums depend. Vivaldi does not (absolutely could not) write its own forum software. There are no personnel to do it.
There actually aren't millions interested in Vivaldi who do not have a mobile phone. The webmail service is free - that is, it COSTS Vivaldi but does not cost you. To accommodate those few users interested in having Vivaldi webmail who do not have a cell phone, there are the two community managers to help.
It was necessary to implement the mobile phone verification because it was the only tool available to the Community team that could stem the flow of hundreds of spam profiles.
So, there are volunteers (such as myself) who are sufficiently dedicated to the success of Vivaldi to try to help other users. There is forum and mail software, not built by (could not be built by) Vivaldi. There are measures in place, as available from the software vendors, to keep the forums from being flooded by spam, and to keep spam-originating accounts from being set up on Vivaldi webmail (which accounts, because they flood the web with spam, cause ANY email originating from a vivaldi.net account to be treated as spam by mail services, and hidden from potential recipients in spam folders, or rejected entirely from ever being received at the other end.)
-
I know that sms verification helps fight spam and abuse, but it is a huge pain for people who care about privacy.
Let me give you 10 reasons why you should remove verification
- loss of privacy
- spamming by you or your partners
- Interception by hackers and spam
- lost phone or damaged sim card can be a problem to log in and change data
- if your phone is lost, a dishonest finder can easily get into your account, which is very dangerous in case of emails (in fact, all accounts can be accessed)
- sim swap attack - fraudster will pretend to be from operator and will ask for copy of sim card. And even though he doesn't know our passwords he can easily get access to our email and other related accounts.
- phone numbers are not assigned only to one user for life, if we forget to top up the account, we forget about it, after some time the operator will sell it to another person.
- after some time honest people will not be able to register the number because the previous owner has already done it.
- it is not a problem for hackers to buy registered cards in bulk. If they commit a crime, it is not them who will suffer, but the people whose data and identity documents have been stolen.
- will make it difficult or impossible for young people without passports to open accounts because they can not register sim cards.
If you want to fight abuse there are other ways to do it:
-Limiting daily messages of suspicious users (unblocking the limit after e.g. phone verification.- phone numbers are not assigned only to one user for life, if we forget to top up the account, we forget about it, after some time the operator will sell it to another person.
- after some time honest people will not be able to register the number because the previous owner has already done it.

If you want to fight abuse there are other ways to do it:
Limiting daily messages of suspicious users (unblocking the limit after e.g. phone verification.Captaha during account registration, and during login for suspicious IP
Improving anti-spam systems (e.g. account blocking for people who have sent the same or similar messages to a large number of people in a short period of time)

Hello @jaconnellmdpc
The phone verification is only for using the Webmail and blog services. This is specifically requested to avoid using Vivaldi for purposes other than what is intended with these services.
However, if there is a problem with your phone number, by contacting us we may be able to block your account - change the number to a secure one.
That is what our support department, Vivaldi team and moderators are for.
