Vivaldi browser introduces Break Mode: the new way to pause the Internet

Is there any reason that -ing doesn't hide the icons of pinned tabs?
Because the UI is not gone and you can interact with the whole UI and e.g. close a tab and right-click on the pinned tabs and unpin them, make screenshots etc. pp.?
The only thing that is truly deactivated are the tabs contents.
-
But it's not good that they're sneaking it in.
And looking at the current contents of the list, they aren't just disabling filters on privacy-friendly sites like duckduckgo, but also on bing, which definitely isn't privacy-friendly. -
@mscha "sneaking" isn't appropriate, they are not hiding it and completely transparent about it. You're free to disable it, even disable native adblocking and using uBO and block everything as you need. Vivaldi needs some incomes, they're not living out of thin air.

@mscha What @ian-coog said. Have a look at the list he linked to and also read:
https://vivaldi.com/blog/vivaldi-business-model/
"Sneaking it in" sounds a bit harsh given we list in the changelog here (in it's own section no less) and it is unambiguous about what it does (i.e. the changelog entry isn't written in a confusing way to hide what this is). We also mentioned it when it first appeared on Android and Desktop snapshots (which followers go through with a fine toothed comb), plus we give you a way to opt out, which was highlighted in the changelog entries.
This is the first desktop snapshot with this change
It was in 3.2 for Android and the snapshot that included it was an RC without many entries (and it was the first entry), so I think it was pretty obvious and widely discussed. What else would you have us do to avoid it being labeled "sneaking it in"?

-
@mscha: Just a bug, fixed internally. Plan to cherry pick the fix for any minor update that comes out
-
@iAN-CooG Well discovered! I knew nothing about this, & so immediately checked my Snapshot as well, where i found it was also Enabled [grrrrrrr, i feel this is very dodgy behaviour!]. Unlike the egregious WebRTC setting, at least this one so far seems to stay Disabled after restarts.

dodgy behaviour
It's not more "dodgy" than having default bookmarks/speed dials, it's the only way for Vivaldi to have some income so they initially force them to you but you're free to remove what you don't want.
-
@steffie: It was mentioned and discussed in the snapshots that first included it and was listed all 3 times in an unambiguous manor. See also the comments above from myself and @iANCooG. As for the WebRTC setting, third party extensions can overule this setting, a design feature of Chromium. This is why it changes.
-
@iAN-CooG You are incorrect. Any new setting that manifestly involves user privacy implications, needs to be announced [done] & set disabled as default [not done], thus letting the user opt in, not set enabled, necessitating the user to opt-out.
-
@Steffie ok, you're right.

Nice job
Middle click a tab thumbnail to close it would be nice
When middle clicking the addressbar with ctrl held, maybe the url should also open in new tab. -
@ruarí: How about explicitly mentioning it on the “What's new” page that automatically opens after you've installed the update?
That way, people who don't read the small print in the release notes are also informed. -
@ruarí: some people would complain about getting free gold, "because it's so heavy!"
-
@ruarí: Please reconsider adding searchable tags for bookmarks, Requested over 4 years ago and have around 80 upvotes on feature requests forum. https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/24595/add-searchable-tags-for-bookmarks?_=1599473380543

3.3.2022.35
Break mode now has proper background - good.
It can't be properly unpaused - "" image remains on screen and pages and menus not reacting on anything - bad.I object the statement "Allow Ads was made in the most unambiguous way".
It could've been made visible on the Privacy page in settings.
But instead it is sneaked (yes, I've chosen the same words deliberately) into the sources list, broadening it's actual use without any visual clues. Nasty. While I might be not really affected by this move, it is a worrying sign.
While Vivaldi is still a far cry from a certain competitor, it looks like here comes the time to return the investments and who knows what will come next...Want me to care and show you support?
- Add a whole separate "Support the developers" section in the settings with all relevant setting and any statements on why you think it's a good idea for me to support you. ("It's fast and secure" won't help though.)
I'm not totally happy with Vivaldi - I don't think you understand my needs and instead waste time on bells and whistles, easy to implement cosmetic features. Make me change my mind first.
Sneaking ads might be a short term win but you will waste the trust from your most loyal auditory and lose in the long run. Grow balls to keep it open and stand out from the crowd - show you deserve the trust and support.

As others have recently remarked in Snapshot threads, i do hope the unfortunate too-close-to-windoze icon for the StartPage gets replaced sooner not later.
Agreed about windoze, they've must have changed it though to differentiate itself from calendar , a sign that it we' re even closer to getting it (&M3) ?
-
@Gwen-Dragon it wasn't sarcasm, it was fact.
Look at all the people whining about the ads. They get to use a wonderful, fully customizable browser, and yet they complain about ads because it wasn't written out in 72 point, bold text as "WE HAZ ADZ!" in words small enough for them to comprehend.
Ok, I think that might need a sarcasm tag.
