Switching video to full screen is slow

Not sure if it's the same issue, but there are a few topics about this, the one with the most recent replies is this: https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/38509/youtube-full-screen-issue.

Believe me, at first I used Search to seek for my issue, but I never saw this thread you posted. Yes, it's the same issue, but sadly, as you can see, no one could resolve it in ages.

how can I have a smoother animation when passing to fullscreen? more like firefox does if u know what I mean. Are there flags to change?
-
@nemesi I donβt think there is anything that you can do to fix it (Settings, Webpages, Hardware acceleration is probably already enabled unless you had to disable it to solve another issue).
The problem is due to the way that Vivaldi codes its interface over the Chromium rendering engine. The developers are aware of the problem, but there is only so much that they can do.

This slower "stepped" animation when going fullscreen started with changes made specifically by Youtube pretty recently. Other sites like for example Vimeo are not slow like this.
Yes, Firefox is definitely smoother, but it also "cheats" darkening the screen when doing it so it looks smoother. Opera has the same slowness, so maybe it's a general Chromium issue.

I'm fairly confident that I've had this stepped animation on YouTube for years.

@Komposten I don't know, it seems to come and go. Some versions of Vivaldi seem smooth, then a new release makes it slow again.
But the thing where it seems to show the YT search for a bit before going full-screen is I think something new. Might be wrong though, just feel I've noticed it only lately.
I found this YT-proxy site, transition to FS there is much faster.
https://toogl.es/#/view/bON-KPiiNCk
So definitely something with how the YT site itself is coded, and probably Chromium/Chrome does not handle it well. Which is strange, considering YT is Google ... sheeshBasically, almost any site with YT embeds has faster fullscreen than on YT itself
And like I said above, Vimeo is silky smooth:

@Pathduck YouTube introduced the option to scroll down to the comments while in fullscreen a while ago (can't remember when, but sometime last year). When you scroll down the search bar appears at the top, so this might be where the search bar comes from when going fullscreen.
Both the embedded YouTube video and Vimeo also goes fullscreen in a stepped fashion for me, but much faster than on YouTube. Vimeo is clearly the winner, with the stepping being so fast it almost isn't there.

For whats it's worth, the transition and redraw of the window while switching from/to fullscreen got drastically slow and noticeable also in my Windows7 32bit since Vivaldi 3.0, noticeable on both Youtube and Twitch. I don't consider it a biggie for me since I don't need to switch many times, once in full screen it remains so until I finished watching.

You are not the only one. There are a bunch of topics and user reports about this:
-
when I select fullscreen mode on YouTube in Vivaldi it becomes larger in steps takes about 3 seconds. It works fine with Vimeo. YouTube normal-fullscreen transition works good in chrome on my computer. I was having the same problem in Ubuntu.
-
@hackasaur It is a known issue.
-
@hackasaur
Hi, I have the same on Chrome on Linux but more 0.5 seconds for the 3 steps.
Cant check on Windows at moment.Cheers, mib

As Pesala pointed out, others have this issue too and there doesn't seem to be a fix yet. Some related topics:

- https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/46966/opening-a-video-in-fullscreen-and-then-going-back-has-very-laggy-animations (when Vivaldi is not maximized)
I can't recall whether this was properly submitted as a bug yet and if the devs are aware of it.
Here is what it often looks like for me, especially exiting full screen is laggy: https://pictshare.net/m9duau.mp4. It can also become worse (more laggy, slower) than this.
It doesn't even seem to be directly about the video going full screen, but rather about Vivaldi's full screen mode (which is part of the process when making a video go full screen), because the same kind of lag happens when I'm activating just that view (default: F11) on sites like YouTube, Twitch or Vimeo (without making the video full screen). This video shows it: https://pictshare.net/10r68p.mp4.
Once Vivaldi is in full screen mode like this, switching the video to full screen does not lag anymore, then it's just one step. That's what it should always look and feel like.

@0asdf
Hi, as I mention in my post it is the same on Chrome and Edge(ium), Edge need two steps, on Windows 10 Pro 2004 (was the same on 1909).
I have no time to search in the Chromium bug tracker but I guess there are reports, too.Cheers, mib

Don't even need to go fullscreen, open a panel and the page resizing "redrawing" is laggy, then close it, it has a laggy animation again, every time. It also happens when you open the Ctrl+F (find in page) bar, a laggy experience overall.
My conclusion is YouTube pages must be very heavy for the engine to redraw in different resolutions in real time like this.
Firefox transition "cheats" by fading the screen (does it even redraw the page like this behind the scenes if one manages to disable the fading?).And yeah it's the same on Chromium, so it's doubly Google's fault.

@mib2berlin
Thanks for pointing that out, I read before that it could be a general Chrome/Chromium issue, so hopefully it'll be fixed at some point.
Some user reports are contradictory though, they only seem to experience the lag in Vivaldi, or at least not as severe in other browsers.@rluik
You're right, it's the same with opening and closing panels. I just forgot about it because I'm using floating panels where this doesn't happen. Basically toggling any of Vivaldi's UI elements can cause lag on YouTube (Twitch, Vimeo, etc.).I wouldn't really say Firefox is cheating though, because the fading transition obviously only happens when making the video go full screen. But setting Firefox itself to full screen (also F11) or opening any sidebar is also lag-free in Firefox.

This is embarrassing and needs to be dealt with.
I was going to give Vivaldi another shot, but still not this time.
It's terrible that they ignore such basic usability stuff.
If your graphical stack sucks so much, putting a powerful CPU and GPU to the knees, then why would even consider packing your UI with a ton of animations that doesn't work??!It seems like Vivaldi is being created as a proof of concept, but not as a usable thing.
Goodbye Vivaldi for another 2 years.(mod edit: language)

This old problem is very annoying. I hope to see it fixed someday

I wrote about this kind of problem some time ago https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/40969/very-non-smooth-youtube-page-window-scaling. I don't think it's Vivaldi's full screen mode problem because in my case scaling and going full screen is pretty smooth on twitch or vimeo unlike YT.
