Switching video to full screen is slow
-
@JohnnyFire I noticed that if there are some other programs running behind Vivaldi window, they can appear during the fullscreen switch. Minimizing all apps and having only Vivaldi maximized, the flash doesn't occour. It's probably because something is messing for a fraction of a second with the window redrawing, the flash is due to viewing the other apps window behind during the redraw.

This is still happening to me for couple versions now (currently on 2.11.1811.52 (Stable channel) (64-bit)).
Is this reported as a bug or not?
Does anybody else have this problem still? -
@zmajoshi I confirm it's still there on last Stable and also on Snapshot 2.12.1873.3 (64 bits).
-
@zmajoshi same problems on 2.11.1811.52 x64 (Windows 10 ver 1909). Toggling fullscreen mode is really slow and buggy
-
Does anybody knows if this is reported to Vivaldi team?
-
Same for me, has been this way ever since I started using Vivaldi years back.
Version 2.11.1811.52 (Stable channel) (64-bit).There are also other topics about this, some are:

I see the two stage enlargement on switching to full screen. The first stage enlarges the video but still show the header with the search bar.
The second stage enlarges to fullscreen, and finally the progress bar disappears.
- Entering fullscreen takes about 1.5 seconds
- Leaving fullscreen takes about 1 second
Maybe I just got used to it, but for me it is a non issue. The latest version of Firefox takes about 1 second in each direction, but without the two stage enlargement, just the expected delay while the progress bar and exit fullscreen message disappear.
-
@Pesala For me it varies sometimes.
In the best case it's just that "two stage" process that takes 1-1.5 seconds for entering and leaving fullscreen.
But sometimes the CPU and memory usage seem to be higher than before when entering fullscreen, especially after watching for a while. Then each of the stages just takes longer and they feel more like 3-5 stages, and the whole process takes like 2-3 seconds or so. It just feels very sluggish then, while the rest of the browser and other tabs work normally. This even happens when I clear all browsing data and don't have any other tabs open, and nothing demanding going on in the background. And my PC should definitely be able to handle this, like I said the rest of the browser works fine, for example having many tabs open.

I remember back when youtube switched from Flash to HTML5 video, that's when it became jerky in going full screen.

@neonturbo said in youtube full screen issue:
It is unique to Vivaldi.
It is not. Opera does the same thing. Firefox is definitely a bit smoother, but also slyly (like a true fox) hides it by dimming the screen so it looks smoother.
Old Edge is even more stuttery but that's to be expected I guess.
-
For some time I'm having a problem which seems to be Chromium related issue. It's not very disruptive, but surely it's annoying.
Simply every time I'm watching a video on YT and I want to turn Full Screen on, the video stutters and lags for few seconds, before turning on. I tried using the most common "fixes" (like keeping the browser updated, turning off hardware acceleration, etc.), but nothing really helped. And so far the only browser which doesn't have that issue is Firefox.
-
@nicolasdominique If it is chromium related then that's not good, but the Vivaldi team may be limited in what they can do to fix it. One thing I have noticed with vivaldi is that turning off animation can sometimes help speed things up.
Turning off hardware acceleration is unlikely to help in this case and will probably make things worse - that's usually only recommended if you end up not seeing anything at all.
-
Not sure if it's the same issue, but there are a few topics about this, the one with the most recent replies is this: https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/38509/youtube-full-screen-issue.

Believe me, at first I used Search to seek for my issue, but I never saw this thread you posted. Yes, it's the same issue, but sadly, as you can see, no one could resolve it in ages.
-
how can I have a smoother animation when passing to fullscreen? more like firefox does if u know what I mean. Are there flags to change?
-
@nemesi I donβt think there is anything that you can do to fix it (Settings, Webpages, Hardware acceleration is probably already enabled unless you had to disable it to solve another issue).
The problem is due to the way that Vivaldi codes its interface over the Chromium rendering engine. The developers are aware of the problem, but there is only so much that they can do.
-
This slower "stepped" animation when going fullscreen started with changes made specifically by Youtube pretty recently. Other sites like for example Vimeo are not slow like this.
Yes, Firefox is definitely smoother, but it also "cheats" darkening the screen when doing it so it looks smoother. Opera has the same slowness, so maybe it's a general Chromium issue.

I'm fairly confident that I've had this stepped animation on YouTube for years.
-
@Komposten I don't know, it seems to come and go. Some versions of Vivaldi seem smooth, then a new release makes it slow again.
But the thing where it seems to show the YT search for a bit before going full-screen is I think something new. Might be wrong though, just feel I've noticed it only lately.
I found this YT-proxy site, transition to FS there is much faster.

So definitely something with how the YT site itself is coded, and probably Chromium/Chrome does not handle it well. Which is strange, considering YT is Google ... sheeshBasically, almost any site with YT embeds has faster fullscreen than on YT itself
And like I said above, Vimeo is silky smooth:
