Portable Version

so you are saying the devs are not able to make it fully portable, despite every other browser is available as a portable app? like for m3 im waiting for this to happen since years..
-
@schreck I didn't say they are not able. I said "until Vivaldi developers write a 'go anywhere' encryption protocol'..." There is probably little to no limit to what the Vivaldi devs are able to do. But it's a small team, and there are priorities - one of which does not include portable at the moment. Portable is not among the top 30 requested features (it only has 27 votes, ranking it 43rd). Mobile is among the top 10, and is being actively developed. But not portable.
I have been waiting for a vertical bookmark bar for over four years. That also has not been priority. In the meantime, over 129 new features have been introduced, and more continue to come with each release. It can't be predicted at this time, when we might see portable.

Chrome, which vivaldi uses as Base, is not available as a fully portable app (there's some issues with passwords) , so that makes it difficult for Vivaldi to manage.

@LonM Vivaldi is based on the work of the open source Chromium project, like many browsers today. But the Chromium browser, which is a kind of "demo" of the underlying technologies, can be built in a fully portable way. Portable or not, this is a design choice, this has nothing to do with the Chromium project. Many browsers based on the Chromium's work are fully portable (like Opera is).
Vivaldi is what Opera should had become (after Opera 14), but Opera is always portable (like it already was) while Vivaldi is not.
I agree that this is not a priority, but Vivaldi is a "power user" browser, this is not Microsoft Edge. I understand Vivaldi is a small team (i had 2 startups in the past, in which i was lead developper with a small team to help me), but how a browser born as the "true successor" of the Opera's 14 spirit could lack this feature ?
I want to support Vivaldi, i'm using it at home, but i'm forced to use Opera on my stick & mobile device (sync is fully working on both).
My encouragements to the team anyway, Vivaldi is the best browser.

Bumping and resurrecting just as a reminder for the Vivaldi team that a truly portable version of Vivaldi is a much wanted feature.
k, thanks, bye, cya next month. -
any progress on portable vivaldi or any improvement in vivaldi sync which last time i used it it was crashing and burning and couldnt sync addons
-
@eilegz
Hi, portable no but I use Vivaldi all day on different Linux/Windows systems and no burning and all addons are synced.
Some more settings are synced, too.Cheers, mib

So what's the logic in not being able to copy a profile to a new system and having extensions work EG. new build with new OS, or just a new OS.
I understand that some bits are encrypted but why are extensions part of that? What exactly is the security risk with having them copied over?
-
I have a question
If I have two computers, one vivaldi standalone
Can I make two copies of vivaldi standalone and run them on two computers?
Will there be other problems like this: the identity of sync, the identity of the device running vivaldi, etc.
-
@poto You may have as many standalone instances of vivaldi on as many or as few machines as you like, and sync them all with the same profile. For instance, I run six standalone instances on two machines right here, another 3 on a laptop, and another 3 on a machine 600 miles from here, all synced to the same profile.
Sometimes, if I don't get a chance to keep them all updated, I may find that some of my old/no-longer-valid bookmarks will get synced back to systems where I had deleted them, but I just delete them again, and that gets synced back across the table. So, no big deal.

Saved data for extensions is considered private. It needs to be protected just like login info. However, for Opera, because users complained big time, Opera makes an exception for standalone installations and makes it so extensions survive when running the profile on another OS. It's a good compromise. As for passwords in standalone installations, Opera users rely on sync or use lastpass or keypass for passwords.
As for naming, Opera has always called it a standalone installation (USB) install and now they advertise it as Opera Portable and Opera USB, but it's still "standalone installation" in the installer. "Standalone installation" and "Portable" are considered equal to Opera users, despite the caveat about passwords.

Hi,
As an Update on V for Windows:
2020:Sync'd Profile
Moved to another Machine- Live Chrome Extensions are AutoDownloaded and Installed.
- Settings are Kept in some of them (uBlock, Midnight Lizard...) in others, Partly.
- Sometimes, a Chrome warning appears about "Some Settings has been reset, do you want to reset all?"
Can be Skipped, after check it, they are all kept. - On a Live OS (MediCat), WebPanels disappeared.
Better than before.

It is possible to have all that private info in a single folder, if Slimjet team managed to do it, so does any Chromium browser.@Zalex108
Thanks for the update, but that requires Sync to be on, which isn't exactly what we are looking for. -

Other browsers are portable.
For example: centbrowser.com
