Report websites that block Vivaldi
-
As many of you probably know, some websites block 'unsupported' browsers, usually based on 'User Agent'. See our help page for more information about this (and for how to fix it using an extension). Some sites will completely prevent access - with or without an error message - while some sites can have altered or broken functionality instead.
We'd like to deal with this issue and as a first step, we're making a list of websites blocking Vivaldi based on User Agent. So far this is based mostly on bug reports we have received, but there's bound to be more sites doing it.
If you have come across any such websites, please:
-
Site: https://teams.microsoft.com/
Broken User Agent:Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/78.0.3904.99 Safari/537.36 Vivaldi/2.9.1705.41
Workaround: Use a Microsoft Edge User Agent, and remove_#/unsupportedBrowser
from the URL -
@LonM Thanks!
For anyone wanting to check what their current User Agent is, just search for 'user agent' using DuckDuckGo: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=user+agent

The dreaded "Unsuported Browser" message from https://www.omers.com/.
I do not use a User Agent switcher as I am not sure I can trust it to be not tracking or sucking up PII.
modedit added link which causes the trouble

@greybeard Thanks for the heads up! Can confirm that changing the UA to Chrome's fixes this
-
In general, using a UA switcher allows you to access these pages, but not fix the problem, this is still an unacceptable, insulting and discriminatory browsersniffing, that is not resolved with a UAswitcher, but with a "loving mail" to the author of that page or a boycot.
Browsersniffing should serve exclusively for statistical purposes, in a discriminatory manner it amounts to a direct insult to the user.
"This road is exclusively for Mercedes and BMW" would be something similar.
Only the UAswitcher is due, if there is no other choice, having it permanently on is very counterproductive for Vivaldi's presence on the network. -
@LonM Same for "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/80.0.3956.0 Safari/537.36 Edg/80.0.328.4".
Though I have low hopes for this since Teams currently breaks Microsoft's own Chromium based Edge Dev browser as well - not because of the user agent, it just hangs the whole browser.
-
@Catweazle You are right, I should have worded my last post differently. Changing the UA is a workaround at best, and us collecting this information is simply the first step in finding a better solution.
Contacting the website owners about the issue is a good way to go, and can lead to a change. But unfortunately it's not enough in many cases.

Wait, what? A first step?
Haven't you been dealing with this issue from Day One?
And hasn't there been something along the lines of old Opera's browser.js (dynamically update-able is key) in place for a long time, too? I've asked this specific question at least 3 times before and have never received an answer. As long as you're going to continue modifying the default agent, it's the responsible thing to doβand relatively easy, too, since it's merely a list of sites that are reported to you in various ways.
If "no" to either of the above, why not?

I'm no expert, so I don't know about this user agent stuff. But I'm pretty sure I have the latest version Vivaldi. Either way it looks like Shopify admin won't work with Vivaldi.
-
@nilslorvick Thanks!
@rseiler We have a similar system in Vivaldi and use custom user agents for several sites already, and will add to it based on reports we receive. Ideally we'd find a more proactive approach to it if possible - there's already a few sites mentioned in this thread that we haven't received reports about before now.
@aarongreen Thanks for the heads up, Shopify is indeed blocking us. The latest Stable version of Vivaldi is 2.9.1705.41, if you're not sure if you're up to date you can check for updates via Help > Check for Updates. You can see your current version by going to Help > About

@GraveDigger Did you try to log in/create an account?

I get an unsupported browser message in the Gliffy Plugin in our company Confluence installation.
Using the User Agent switcher and choosing a Chrome version helps.
