What’s Vivaldi’s business model?

Google is undoubtedly the best search engine for results, so I use mainly Startpage because it uses the Google engine
I have to disagree on that one. I would agree 3 years ago but two of the ones we partner with now works better for me than Google does. I have been using one of those for two years now and do not miss Google results one bit.
-
@WildChild85 - it's a bit odd that start.me uses Google for you to search your bookmarks.
-
@Gwen-Dragon Bing (Live Search was the name before that) never has been good for searching for content on Microsofts site from their own search engine.
-
@leethray The best way is to use V and the default search partners. Promoting Vivaldi on social media and to use word of mouth. As long as you can get away with it tell your coworkers, family and friends about V. You might even show them Vivaldi on your personal laptop and or tablet.
Methods of promoting Vivaldi is limited only by your imagination.

@danielson - word just in from Start.me: "have now added both StartPage and DuckDuckGo to your search box and set the latter as a default engine."

Great article to get the insights of how Vivaldi's team managed to create, maintain and upgrade this project. Must say I supported google at their very beginning, I liked the way they came into business with innovative ideas but also I helpless witnessed their transformation into the current private-data-predator company who betrayed much of their starting ideals so, when I found out about that old Opera's team launched Vivaldi, I didn't hesitate to start to get rid of google-based services starting obviously with Chrome. Now I can say I'm an almost google-free person (gmail being the sole exception, a huge one, I know) for several years. Regarding search engines, I use Ecosia as the main one, if I can't find what I'm looking for then duckduckgo is my secondary secondary one; if with them I can't find it either then, just then (rare), I type google.com in address bar and rent my soul to the devil for a few minutes.
Kudos to the developers team!

@catweazle: agreed, I've been using StartPage ever since the Snowden revelations, actually. Sometimes I'll use Google Images but other than that, it's all StartPage
DuckDuckGo is decent but uses Bing/Yahoo/etc as a backend, and the results aren't as good for my usage

Interesting discussion about search engines. I've been using Ecosia since I first heard about it (via Vivaldi!), but occasionally switch of to Google still. There are two reasons for this:
- Better search results for some topics. I could probably use another engine that is based on Google for this, so I'll have to try that.
- Google's built-in "widgets". Things like currency conversions, unit conversions, plotting functions, quick weather check, etc. right in the search result pane. Other search engines I've tried doesn't have this (with the exception of Windows 10 search/Cortana, which I use for these things on my desktop).

I use not only Startpage, I also use the others in the list. Ecosia and DDG often have similar results when using both the same Bing engine. QWant is also interesting, offering some options that others do not have. But in general, at least for my use, SP is the one that best suits my needs in daily use .

I use DDG in my Smartphone
-
@christian: I search in Google to see if others have searched for similar things - what others do. But when I need the correct answer and I know what I search for, just "where did I read it" - the old Kvasir search, I cannot use Google or Bing or even Yahoo: they all are biased. Quant gives me the answer. I could not care less about everything else - and I wonder who cares? Certainly not in business use!

Those of us that manage business should be better at ensuring that you can get paid. We need "something" and I see my responsibility. The DNS is a leap and we should consider "group" or "family" sharing. Just to be able to block MS and Google out, the other is to study who is in, and what the heck is going on. It is answers, and simple questions - why do they have to track? Here is an alternative - thanks!

yes i did, i tell my friends to use vivaldi for their default browser. and after read this, i change my search engine to vivaldi's search engine partner

Why are several of you hinting that DDG is mostly based on Bing?! That's not what Wikipedia or DDG themselves say and DDG has always given me better results than the few times I used Bing or Ecosia (which is a front-end for Bing results...)
-
@christian Yes that is also the first thing came to my mind. Please do add this button if you like.
I can't come up with very good idea right now, but your bussiness mode of earning income by supporting other good but non-mainstream web services is the best way, I think. -

We really appreciate that! Since we develop Vivaldi based on "one happy user at a time" approach, it is great to see that we are supported "one user at a time" also

That's an interesting observation. I did use the Qwant app on my phone for quite some time and I have to say I drew the same conclusion after a few months.

Great insight as to what Vivaldi is doing and what Vivaldi stands for.
As for Search Engines, I primarily use DDG as I cannot get Startpage to work in the Search engines box. (I use custom settings whch generates a custom URL that V won't accept.) and Bing.
I have tried many and have found that Bing gives the most :Relevant" results for my searches.
Cheers. -
