stop putting default bookmarks on update pls
-
When I updated Vivaldi I got the default bookmarks added to mine.
I don't need them obviously.
Is there an option to disable this when installing the update that I missed maybe?
-
@rufford155 Maybe a bug that affects some users. Nothing to get irate about, as it is certainly not intentional. I have not seen it happen for ages.
If you use Sync, make sure that you empty the deleted folder after deleting bookmarks.

I thought I read somewhere that including the default bookmarks in Vivaldi was one way that they generated income. The owners of the sites included in the default bookmarks pay for them to be included. If this income keeps the Vivaldi team working on improving the browser experience, I'm all for it. You can delete all the default bookmarks with four clicks. Small price to pay for a great browser.

Vivaldi is aware of the situation.

Agreed. This is the first update (the recent one, to 2.5.1525.40 stable) that I remember this happening--at least in a very long time. It didn't take long to delete them, but it did take time to view the folders just to make sure none of them were mine. Most browsers make money via a default search engine. I'd recommend Vivaldi stick to that method.
-
@paulri Vivaldi does get income from a default search engine. It is not nearly enough to support the browser.
-
I don´t mind they do this, few clicks to delete them. But primary problem is they mess with sync and other Computers. Delete from one PC, update second PC. Second PC (re)turn back bookmarks on PC one. And so on, chasing own tail around.

Please see the links I provided. The "heap big kahuna", Jon, the CEO of Vivaldi himself replied.
They are aware of the issue and are searching for the culprit. As always have some patience.
The bug is related to more than one aspect of Vivaldi and I'm sure the devs will track it down and fix it. -
The Sync Dev said the fix in on the way:)
-
It appears to be fixed. At least it didn't happen on the last snapshot or stable release.
-
I just installed Vivaldi to a new computer and synced before browsing around. The default bookmarks merged with my curated bookmarks so I guess it's not fixed for everyone yet. But good to know it's being worked on since Vivaldi is otherwise very good in letting ME control the browsing experience, it's why I love this browser.
Finding and deleting the merged bookmarks is a lot more work than just four clicks as someone claimed!

@rufford155 Sometimes the default bookmarks were "reinstalled" via a backport whenever a new version, stable or snapshot, was released. It didn't happen to me during the last update.
-
@Para-Noid What do you mean by backport?
-
@Johanp Welcome to the forums and enjoy Vivaldi Browser

Sometimes the bookmarks reappeared when my laptop was just turned on.
I would shutdown overnight and when I booted back up the bookmarks reappeared.
I did not initiate any contact with V except I have sync enabled at all times with the
default bookmarks deleted from the bookmarks panel and trash on all synced installs.Maybe backport is the wrong term. But, the bookmarks kept returning without any action by me.

@Para-Noid Thanks for the reply.
From wipediaBackporting is the action of taking parts from a newer version of a software system or software component and porting them to an older version of the same software.....
This is the "dangerous" method!

@lamarca Like I said "the wrong" term. Not sure what it's called when something is re-added(?) when it was previously removed. Knowing me it's probably something simple.
additional: I always thought backported was when something was added through a back-door/back-channel?

Not really. It could be a term unknown for me

How about duplicated? It's the name we used at work.

makes sense. -
@Para-Noid To "back-port" something means to add something developed for a newer version, to an older version. For instance, if the latest version is version 4, and a security update for it is developed and added. the most widely-used version might be version 3.9, and so one might back-port this security update to version 3.9, so that the majority of users can also benefit from the new development. Ver. 3.9 is still 3.9, but if you take the upgrade, it's now as secure as version 4.
Same with bugs. If 2.5 was released with a regression that made WhatsApp quit working, and the problem was solved in 2.6, then the fix can be back-ported to 2.5 in a minor update.
The sticky problem with the deleted default bookmarks, is the bookmarks being "restored" or "re-added" by sync or updates.
("port" comes from a Latin root meaning "carry," from which we get words like portage, transport, import and deport. So back-port is to carry back.)

hello jarnix
been living with default thumbnails populating the spaces every time the history/ cache is cleared. thinking it is acceptable. as the demonstrated example links reappear each time. sync or not, the example links are not a bad starting point for the business of the browser. just be thankful that updates save settings; remember when they didn't? maybe that was too long ago for most of you.
