Refining the Vivaldi icon library
-
Remember when we introduced the new Application Icon way back in Vivaldi 1.11? It was high time for all the little icons in our interface to get refined.

Nice to have a look into a designers mind
One thing that distracts me is the contacts icon - that sticks out like a sore thumb and the other multicolored (multi shaded? other gray value?) icon is prone to clash with different themes too.
-
Would be awesome if there is also squared iconset version of those icons. Not-rounded, sharp icons will be activated for example if Corner Rounding is set to Disabled.
-
Good article, its nice to know how much effort is being put into the UI. I look forward to the future work that gets done.
-
Thank you. That's very interesting. I'm very curious about future developments.
You say there are about 120 in total, can we see them? -
the roundness hurts! I prefer varying angles over that, sorry
especially the bookmark icon is terrible -
@folgore101: I can't share the complete icon set unfortunately, as many of them are related to Mail which is still not released. The count also includes size variations, though not all icons exist in 3 sizes yet.
-
@enc0re: Having a way of doing this programmatically is something we have considered. It is possible, but not trivial. Something for us to consider for sure
-
@quhno: The contacts icon uses opacity for the smaller head, so there won't be any issues with themes. Having both heads solid made the icon appear optically very large, so we opted for opacity in this case.
-
@atlemo Very cool, I believe in that ;). I like completely squared, sharp design.
-
@enc0re: Like C sharp
-
@atlemo Ok, thanks anyway.
-
@zakius: The rounding feels a bit much when viewed in larger sizes. For smaller sizes, it is a better fit. Sharp cutoffs are also less forgiving when shapes are scaled with fractions. Not that I don't like the occasional pointy object, especially these days when things are trending towards maximum roundness.

It re-occurs to me how I use a browser now as opposed to how I did 10 or 20 years ago. Not just for surfing but also communicating via web panels with Twitter, Discord, Slack, etc. and also for email, checking feeds with Feed.ly, and soon, with services like Google Stadia, playing games or perhaps even running full-blown apps as the browser becomes The Platform even more tightly than it has been. I look forward to seeing Vivaldi adapt to this exciting evolution.

Congrats on the new icon library! I very much prefer it to the ole sharp stuff, curves are easier on the eyes.
That said, I found that using an UI size other than 100% makes them very, very blurry, for example this one:
100%: https://i.imgur.com/RpnSK3H.png
110% (size that I use): https://i.imgur.com/Y6tzhbQ.png
I've seen this issue on game renderers (RPG Maker MV uses PixiJS and has this issue), and it kinda sucks seeing it here, haha.
Hopefully it's fixable.
Cheers!

Well, so are contacts...
-
@nsane: Well, short of having an insane hidpi screen with 10 times the normal pixel ratio I don't see how this issue could potentially be fixable in any way because of simple physical limitations. There is no physical "tenth of a pixel"...

The new icons are great, but I have 2 problems.
1: For some reason, my reload button is still the old one (yes, I use the newest version of Vivaldi)
2: The bookmark button on the address bar is really thin compared to all of the other icons. Please fix these problems, and the icon UI will be perfect!

Super work. Keep it up. Love Vivaldi.

I love these kind of posts...
