Google wants to be like Apple and wants to be the only one with more control over Android platform?

TL;DR: Google wants to limit 3rd party app permissions.
But because of well known random/arbitrary Play Store policies it looks like only their own apps would have guaranteed rights to handle some stuff...
Google knows better than developer what is key functionality of app you have to obey or extinct. -
@rotfl That's not at all what's happening. Google restricts certain permissions to default handlers – these default handlers can be apps from any developer. Read your own links, they give good information. Take my upvote for that, it's certainly interesting, but you should rethink your tl;dr and the title of the thread, because it's misleading.

@luetage Changed a bit...
I wanted to point out that it's just sick when Google declares that they know better what is the "core functionality" of 3rd party app than developer (by the way of changes). And only Google apps are excluded from being potentially nerfed.
It looks like they strictly enforce their policies on 3rd parties that offer competitive solutions just to make their lives harder...
It is similar scenario as with taking down Vivaldi from AdWords. -
Let's write it down clearly: SMS and call log permissions can only be accessed by apps that have been chosen as default apps for calls or messages. If an app hasn't been selected as default, it loses these permissions. Apps that don't ask to be default handler cannot have these permissions. This is more babysitting from google, to protect the stupid average user from themselves. Nothing more, nothing less. They do the same thing on Chrome. It's old news. Personally I really don't care, I don't want any app to read my messages or phone logs, if I don't make phone calls or message with it – I welcome the change. Now, some people might rely on an app that needs these permissions without being the default app – for those that sucks. We will see how this plays out.

But if course, grumble knows all. Can even read your minds (I wear a tinfoil hat).
