Snapshot window sporadically closes or crashes when I close a tab
-
Now I'm using the previous Snapshot version 1.16.1259.3.x64. No issues in regards to closing a tab is bringing down the browser. However this version (1.16.1259.3.x64) does have website freezing issues where a webpage will sporadically freeze where scrolling or nothing is possible. To unfreeze, I have to close the tab and reopen. During freezing PC RAM and processor is around 25%.
Yes. The snapshot versions are not stable versions but I LOVE the Floating Side bar panel. So convenient.

Same here like described in first post with vivaldi-snapshot 1.16.1279.3 (from herecura Repo with 64bit Arch Linux)

Same problem with vivaldi-snapshot-2.0.1295.3

same problem with vivaldi-snapshot-2.0.1296.4
to fix it it I diabled uBlock Origin and installed Adblock -
@jagdishf
Thanks. I thought I disabled uBlock and the problem still persisted with 1.16.1279.3.x64. Is the issue resolved with anyone else if they disable uBlock? Maybe your fix is specific to 2.0.1296.4? -
@seeley you are right , today he problem persisted. Now I close tabs with CTRL+W and disable the close button .
-
@jagdishf said in Snapshot window sporadically closes or crashes when I close a tab:
@seeley you are right , today he problem persisted. Now I close tabs with CTRL+W and disable the close button .
It worked for about 2 hours. Then again - Vivaldi crashes by closing a tab!
-
@jagdishf Thanks. I close a tab by middle clicking on it. So I guess the issue remains regardless of the method used to close a tab.
-
too sad, after 3 times fixes, this bug is still remained;
the cause cannot be easily found, not just :
- close window
- rewind
- even just click the tab
will cause crash;
today just update to latest snapshot ! press
ctrl+F
result into crash, no idea what to do -
I have the same crashes and a crash dump handy (FTR 30/10/2018 10:28, actually two distinct .dmp files) but I realise there is now version 2.1 out so I will install and give it a try before submitting a bug.
today just update to latest snapshot ! press
ctrl+F
result into crash, no idea what to doThis is another known bug:

@gwen-dragon OK it happened as well in 2.1.1337.36 (Stable channel) (64-bit), I’ll create a ticket as soon as I can.
Both Ctrl+W and mouse click on × trigger the bug sporadically.
-
@Gwen-Dragon I submitted VB-45890 and will send the crash logs when I receive the bug e‐mail.
Latest available Vivaldi version 2.1.1337.36 (Stable channel) (64-bit)
-
@Gwen-Dragon, it happened everyday.
Sometimes Vivaldi restarts on its own but most time it stays closed after crash.
Hopefully, contrary to the in page search freeze, here I have crash logs each time.Should I send more logs?
-
It happens everyday and I think it’s often (not always) on a site that does something with the beforeunload and unload events.
Oh yes exactly, it just happened at 22:42 now, on that site with an unload event listener. -
I think I found the culprit.
It’s an SAP based company website that does some stuff onunload
event (and sometimesbeforeunload
as well).Sometimes it crashes and restarts and sometimes it does not restart the browser.
It seems that: When this site is the only tab, I get one crash log. When it’s not the only tab, it get 2 crash logs.
And here is what it does on
unload
:// from jquery.tools.min.js function(){return typeof o!=="undefined"&&!o.event.triggered?o.event.handle.apply(arguments.callee.elem,arguments):g} // from jquery-1.3.2.min.js function(){return typeof o!=="undefined"&&!o.event.triggered?o.event.handle.apply(arguments.callee.elem,arguments):g} // from site js file EPCM._private.handleBrowserEvent=function(evt){ var browserNS="urn:com.sapportals.portal:browser"; if (evt == null) evt=window.event; if(evt.type == "unload" || evt.type == "load"){ EPCM.raiseEventLocal( browserNS, "pre" + evt.type, evt );} EPCM.raiseEventLocal( browserNS, evt.type, evt ); if(evt.type == "unload"){ EPCM._private.detachWindowEvents(window);} }
You can notice that on
unload
it does twice the same jquery code.
For the record, here is what it does sometimes additionally on
beforeunload
but theunload
above is often alone and enough to crash Vivaldi:// from site js file window.onbeforeunload=function (e){ var browserNS="urn:com.sapportals.portal:browser"; e=e || window.event; if (EPCM.getUAType() == EPCM.SAFARI || EPCM.getUAType() == EPCM.CHROME){ EPCM._private.isOnbeforeunload=true; EPCM.raiseEventLocal(browserNS, "preunload", e); EPCM.raiseEventLocal(browserNS, "unload", e); if (window == EPCM.getSAPTop() && popupUnsavedDataBeforeUnload){ var pop_message=popupUnsavedDataBeforeUnload();} EPCM._private.detachWindowEvents(window); return pop_message;} };
-
@Gwen-Dragon Yes indeed.
I have now just sent this clumsy javascript explanation of mine, together with an example of double crash log and an example of single crash log.
My work‐around: Instead of closing this site tab, I navigate to any other site page before closing the tab safely.

I was contacted by Vivaldi devs:
Hi,
Can you reproduce the bug with 2.3 Stable and 2.4 Snapshot?
Best wishes,To which I replied:
Dear Vivaldi devs,
Just before updating I went to the site that crashed (it’s an internal office site so I cannot share with you) and it crashed with my first try (I go there, I close its tab, Vivaldi crashes).
I updated to 2.3.1440.41 (Stable channel) (64-bit).
After that, I tried 8 times with no crashes at all.
Thank you very much!
With kind regards,It’s great, to me, VB-45890 seems fixed!
