Option to generally copy to clipboard without format
-
Currently copying text from a webpage to an office suite's document is a bit annoying because this text brings its own size, color, font, etc. which are usually unwanted in the document. It would be great to have the option to generally copy to clipboard as plain text instead of having to chose every single time when pasting in the office suite.
-
@ghpy I use two solutions for this at the moment - the Auto Copy extension, and if I forget to merely highlight and not copy, then for paste I use Ctrl+V and select unformatted text.

I know that, but it's annoying if you always have to do that. Just Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V like in Opera 12 is much quicker. 99,9 % I only want the text, not the format.
I am no friend of extensions. They tend to not work (right from the start or at some point in the development). -
Most of the office has the "Paste without formatting" option which is usually bound to Ctrl-Shift-V. So instead of remove the formatting on copy, remove the formatting on paste.

@bimlas
I know that, but the fact remains that the behaviour of Opera 12 was better suited for everyday use than the current behaviour of Vivaldi. Ctrl+V is easier than Ctrl+Shift+V. -
@ghpy The current behavior is dictated by Chromium and not easy to modify. I, too, want plaintext copy. That is why I use the extension and, it is the only extension I use, because I don't like them either. By all means, advocate for the behavior you want. But since it entails modifying the underlying engine, written by someone else, don't look for it to be simple to implement. In the last three years, I have only had to check or uncheck a single setting in the extension, and that was because Chromium changed its highlight/copy behavior.

@ayespy
Thank you for the background information. I can understand that but still hope for the feature to come some day... -
Absolutely a must-have feature!

And it should probably be the default. I think I have never once wanted to use some random format in another document. Does anyone ever? I guess so, but... from all uses I have ever seen of such feature is no more than a nuisance.

Allow for my curiosity: if an extension can modify it, why can't Vivaldi (not easily)?
-
Yes, formatted-copy-by-default is annoying and typically not what a user wants.
There needs to be a setting to set the default behavior (which should start with "unformatted", a ctrl-shift-c/x shortcut to do the alternate, and context/edit menu entries for both, for user awareness.

@rkzn It's the difference between patching the original code in a sustainable manner (the patch has to be applied again each time a new version of Chromium comes out) so that the "copy" function is done differently without breaking other parts of the code; and leaving the code intact but passing the product of "copy" through a different program (with a whole separate process running, and the overhead that entails). To make matters worse, presumably you would have to leave the original lines of code in place so that people who wanted formatted copy could have it.
-
@ayespy OK. Thank you. I think I understand you, but it still does not make 100% sense to me.
Vivaldi does have an option to paste as plain text, couldn't that option, from Vivaldi, by Vivaldi, be turned into this?
I mean, at some point Vivaldi has a function which picks the copied text-with-formatting from the clipboard and strips the formatting before pasting it into (whatever) inside the browser itself. Coulnd't that function be used to strip the formatting before the text is delivered to the operating system / clipboard?
Maybe not, I don't know sh*t about Vivaldi's code. But it does not seem obviously impossible.
-
@rkzn Not impossible. Just not a wave of the wand.
-
@ayespy OK. Thanks
-
And you can't even set Ctrl+V as "Paste as Plain Text", because there is an error which corresponds to a command that does not exist.
There is no "Paste" command so there shouldn't be an error.
Is there any workaround for this? -
@Gregor The Cut, Copy, and Paste commands are reserved by Windows.
-
Does Windows copy text with formatting?
-
@Gregor The default is that if it can copy formatted text, the windows clipboard will accept and prefer that over plain text.
