Vivaldi Rebooted my PC
-
I reported this before, but cannot find the thread.
This happens rarely, but it just happened again. When it happens:
- I am always using Vivaldi
- I am always typing a reply to a forum message
There is no warning or error message. The screen goes black, and Windows restarts. My Veracrypt drive then becomes corrupted, so I have to create a new folder and copy my work across.
Specs AMD A10-6800K, 8 Gb on Win 7 64-bit • Vivaldi 32-bit latest snapshot.

The devs doubtless can't really duplicate your unique setup with the encrypted drive. That makes it kinda hard to replicate and fix a bug.
That said, your symptom reported here also appears unique. I realize it appears that it's always and only happening with Vivaldi and only in a certain circumstance, but I'ma guess what this really is, is a canary in the coal mine. The way you describe the symptom strikes me like something starting to go south on your system - an intermittent failure which is a harbinger of something ultimately more severe.
There are just too many things altogether which could cause the exact symptom you're having - from a dirty socket, to RAM starting to break down, to a processor poorly seated or at the very first stages of failure, to disk surface defects or bad sectors or disk failure, to power supply problems, to OS defects (and these are devilishly hard to run down).
I hesitate to suggest anything. I fear I've only made your day a bit more bleak.

@Pesala - On the bright side, I have a very old XP machine here that I migrated away from years and years ago when it started to do the same basic thing, and 5 out of 6 times that I start it, it will actually boot and may run for hours if I want it to. So, hey - maybe there's a lot of life in the old girl yet!
-
@Pesala Does it freeze or reboots instantly on its own? Have you tried checking the hard drive (esp. the partition on which Vivaldi is installed & the one on which the user data is stored, if it's a different one) for errors?
That might seem odd, but I had a similar problem with my HDD once (corrupted file system) and it caused the system to freeze and reboot while performing certain activities, like e.g. watching a YouTube video. -
@Ayespy If it was a hardware problem I would expect it to happen when using other programs, and not just when using Vivaldi.
Although I use Vivaldi all day long, and typically six hours or longer at a stretch, I am simultaneously running several other programs: WebPlus, PagePlus, FontCreator, Notepad, Opera 12.17 is always running too.
If it was a hardware problem, then it should have happened at least once of these five or so occasions while using one of those other programs. It has not, Neither has it happened when just browsing, but always when typing. • maybe it's my customised Windows keyboard that Vivaldi does not like?
-
This is just a wild guess but maybe you could try disabling WebUSB to see if that stops the issue from occurring:
vivaldi://flags#enable-webusbOn the Mac forums, there were a few users that reported that WebUSB was revealing USB issues on their machines.

Does the same thing on my system too. It happens very rarely, but is absolutely annoying.
Happens only when Vivaldi is on, doesn't have to be active or doing anything heavy, computer just resets suddenly. When I first tried Vivaldi a little over a year ago, this happened at least twice a week, I decided to let it mature a little. I started using Vivaldi again last summer and have had this happen three times from October to December. Now it happened twice today. It is so annoying that I am actually thinking of changing to Firefox. All jokes aside, any ideas?
Os: win10

Every "repeated shutdown while browsing" condition I have ever had, signaled an impending hardware failure. In no case was the browser doing it. All the browser was doing was using parts of the system which were no longer sound and were soon going to pack it in.
-
@Ayespy I remember a thread on My Opera about a TrueType font that cause Windows to reboot. Bugs in software can and do overload systems that cause a general failure like this.
This particular issue has not resurfaced for me since my last update, but that's no guarantee that it won't ever happen again.
I am not sure what can be done unless a built-in crash reporter could catch the problem and save a log file before the system rebooted.
-
This reboot only happens with Vivaldi on, I have used the comp without Vivaldi for months having no sudden reboots.
-
@emaentie - Which points to a driver problem. Have you tried with hardware acceleration disabled?
-
This just happened to me again.
I reported a new bug on December 6th. This happens when watching a video.
(VB-35397) While Watching Video my PC Rebooted
I was just watching this video, then stopped and used the back gesture to return to the search index page
My PC rebooted. Every time this happens it is a significant hassle as I have Vivaldi and Opera installed on a VeraCrypt virtual drive. The file gets corrupted when this happens as files are not closed properly. I have to create a new virtual file, and copy the data from the corrupted drive to the new one.

This is the key point. If it is a video driver problem, and I am not saying that it's not, why does Vivaldi trigger it and not other software programs or other browsers?
-
@gwen-dragon I have replied to the Bug Report email with the crash dump attached.
121517-31093-01.dmp
I see no BSOD - the PC just reboots without warning.
-
I have disabled automatic restart on BSOD. It is set to "Kernel Memory Dump."
-
@pesala maybe you could also take a look into your Windows event log (eventvwr.msc). I'd guess you'll find more than one similar message in the "system" category...
-
I was already using the latest available Graphics driver.
-
funny enough i am having same issue tough initially was an issue with windows itself .
Already tested memory and hard drives and drivers so maybe its vivaldi has its on wen this happens -
When the PC shuts down and restarts, the reason may be overheating. This can occur when the ventilation slits are clogged by dust.
See if this is the case and see if a cleaning with a soft brush and compressed air (it is in spray cans in computer stores) solves the problem. -
@catweazle My PC case is reasonably clean. The most recent episode happened not long after starting up, so was unlikely to have been caused by over-heating. Since this only happens when using Vivaldi, perhaps the devs should look at what is overloading the CPU so much?
