I love the way people think it's a simple task to just completely redesign and rebuild the entire software around a completely different core engine...
-
@cynical13 I know how you feel. We are just as eager to show you what we got. Just want to make sure it is good enough to be shipped out to you.
-
@axk Changing engines is a massive task. You never know what we will do in the future, but I think at this time we focus on other aspects of the browser.

After this post, i tried out the new firefox (have been using Vivaldi only for half a year, give or take a month). Compared speed, cpu, memory usage and vivaldi wins
(Firefox still has it's unique programmer features, but still) -
I am using Firefox as my main browser. Privacy and Security settings, more settings in about:config...
Firefox engine allows smooth scrolling, zooming, etc.
Love v57 improvements (I'm using minimum addons) -
As a second navigator I have changed FF with UR, (as third I use TOR)
-
Longtime Firefox power user -- even donated to Mozilla a few times. I use over 100 userscripts, dozens of add-ons, and custom dictionaries.
FF 57 completely trashed my workflows. Now FF is less extensible than Chrome.
Plus Firefox has been making bad design (and political) decisions for the last few years.Evaluating Opera and Vivaldi as my new principle browser. Alas, they both (and Chrome) seriously cripple extensions, but not as bad as FF 57.
Also Vivaldi has several annoying bugs which I may address in other threads/channels, if they're not already reported.

@brocka Vivaldi is in its infancy. Your patience will be rewarded.
-
@fenshamc: Sad to see you go. Just as a note, though: Although Vivaldi is making use of the Chromium engine for rendering, it doesn't mean all the tracking and alike comes with it. You know Vivaldi highly values your privacy and as soon as someone internally becomes aware of any way you could potentially be tracked, we're trying to cut the cord there. Meaning e.g. calls to Google services getting blocked.
So although nobody can ever guarantee you're 100% save, everybody here is doing their best at protecting you. And that mindset alone is what I personally love about Jon and the whole team around him. -
@jon: Thank you so much for responding to me. I hope I'm not pushing my luck by asking for more details, but I'm going to anyway.
Opera's mobile browsers are the only browsers that still let me access Facebook's messenger feature without using desktop or the basic mobile site. Since you've been testing the mobile Vivaldi browser, can you use it to access messenger without using the app like other browsers, or does it work like Opera does now? I'd love to not have to download another app for my phone or have to use multiple browsers over different devices if I can help it.

I used Opera until v15 was sprung upon us, and I soon switched to Firefox and a host of extensions. With FF 57 coming, I looked around for another browser which had the key features I wanted (speed dial, mouse gestures, customisation) and found Vivaldi.
All I really want now is the ability to move the buttons on the task bar (and status bar) around, then I really will be happy!
I've also just discovered that Yahoo Mail has finally decided to allow Vivaldi users to use their website, so that's pleased me - it was the only thing I was still using Firefox for
Good job guys, keep it up!
-
My thumb up for sync and mobile !!
Willing to use them when ready (so I can stop using FF)
-
@jon: I do not comment here often, but have some thoughts to share.
Easy to implement features that will make Vivaldi musthave browser:
- Autosave three last sessions - tabs will never be lost.
- Browser data Backup/Autobackup - no tricky profile directory search. Bookmarks and tabs will never be lost. Unique file extension will protect from encryption viruses.
- The most powerful ever Old-Opera-style addition of bookmarks is not implemented by any browser yet.
Startup time is really bad. It is important for everyday use.
-
@7pot Add each request in its own post in the Feature Requests thread.
-
@cynical13 It is too early to talk about details like that, but generally we will do what we can to make Vivaldi a great user experience on mobile as well. That means listening to your input as well...
-
@jdouglas Thank you for your kind words and for supporting Opera while Opera was Opera.
There is a lot of things left for us to do. That includes ability to move buttons around. It is high on our list, but may still take a bit of time. Please have patience with us, we are trying our best.
-
@ferran Good to hear. We are getting closer each day.
-
@pesala Yes, please do. We try to get through the requests one by one. These sound like great requests and we will try to get to them sooner rather than later, but you can help by posting them also into our bug tracking system.

I made the change from many years of Firefox (and of the original Opera before it went all Chrome) a few days ago because FF killed most of the addons I use. Vivaldi felt like coming full circle from my first browser love Opera. I just needed 2 extensions to get most of what I want, so very impressed indeed. Now, if Sync comes in soon that would be perfect. And a way to "left click opens new tab".
Well done and thanks for a very elegant and speedy browser. -
@jon: I'm surprised to see that Vivaldi still use search bar next to address bar in default. Back in Presto era when you've cleverly integrated search engines directly to address bar, search bar was the first thing I removed on clear install. Chrome does not use search bar for a long time and Firefox now rides on the same train.
