Spoof Vivaldi as Opera in extension catalog
-
@developers
Could you make it possible to install extensions from the Opera addon catalog? There are some nice extension, which can not be found in the Chrome catalog. I know they can be installed manually, but it would be much better to install them from the catalog. It can not be much work to read the
.nex
files too. -
That's certainly possible. But not all Opera extensions work in Vivaldi (eg sidebar ones), and for most of them there is an equivalent on the chrome web store. I used to run several of them, but nowadays only one. The big downside of Opera extensions is, that they won't update automatically when run in Vivaldi.

I have found, that extensions in the Opera catalog are much better in a lot of cases, and to be honest, I don't want to spend time to replace solutions, which already work very well.
It is true, the sidebar and speeddial API-s are not supported, but it's just a matter of decision from this end. (And resources, I know. But it would be a nice move to support the sidebar API at least.)

Thank you for the idea. It's easier than the manual way, but still, an out of the boy solution would be preferred. It should be the interest of the Vivaldi team as well to make a switch to Vivaldi as easy as possible.

There is a small percent of extension in that catalog, which use the sidebar or speeddial API. Everything else should be compatible. IF I remember correctly, Opera can detect unsupported API-s on install and pop up an error message, so I guess Vivaldi should do that too.
More than that, when Chromium will switch to the now standard webExtension platform, these checks must be done, because of the extendible design of the platform. The whole point of this standard to make extensions work between browsers.
-
@nekomajin But they don't. You ignored my point about opera extension not being able to update automatically in Vivaldi. What's your problem really? You can install all Opera extensions already. And for those users who still can't do this, extensions that don't update on their own are surely a thing they can't handle.
-
If you install them manually from the zip file, they won't update either, so it's not a great point against it.
My problem is that I am on the edge of switching from Opera to Vivaldi, but Vivaldi does not make it easy to do so. I have a few well tested extensions in Opera, which are vital for me, and can not be found in the Chrome catalog. For me, this is a strong reason against Vivaldi, for the time being. (This is only one of a few stuff against the switch, but I don't want to spam this topic with the others.)
I know, Vivaldi is a power user browser, and also, they still have much work to do, but as I see, this is a small task to do, which would bring a huge positive result. I'd like to know the opinion of the developers on this matter.

I don't know why this is relevant, since these extensions are open source and freeware, but I will answer for myself. There is a charge, a small amount, but still, if you want to upload extensions to the Chrome catalog, while the Opera catalog is free. That's why I did not upload my extensions, and I guess it's a reason for some others too.

Good luck. They read the forums, but I doubt they read everything.
