What is Vivaldi's Point?
-
Is this community solely meant as a clone of MyOpera or is there something unique about it? I'm continuing to have difficulty seeing its reason for being so perhaps someone can help me with this. I see a lot of blogs... people fancy themselves writers and away they go with their latest entry but the truth is: there are better blogging platforms online. There are opportunities to put up our images but once again, platforms like Flickr do it better so that does not set Vivaldi apart. A forum is fine but in general forums are meant to assist people with issues and I'm not seeing anything special in that regard. MyOpera began as a place around which Opera users could unite. The bond that held most together was the browser... at least initially. Sadly it became infected with SPAM and we know the end result. Whether anything will remain of the help forums after the dismantling remains to be seen. So I'm left to wonder whether the decision to pull the plug over there was a wise one. And that brings me back to Vivaldi. I still don't "get it." Can someone tell me again... slowly... why is it here?
-
Can't tell you slowly - but in fast I would say that vivaldi.net was partially set up to support what this
is or will become …
... and there are already some quite good guesses (IMHO) what the "something very interesting" will be ...

When the plug is pulled at My Opera, the level of help afforded may not be what it once was. There has already been a sharp decline in any help being offered. The point of Vivaldi? Ask Jon. It is what it is, I suspect, and it may very well be up to us members to shape its future.

Hello, James D.
You said:
> And that brings me back to Vivaldi. I still don't "get it." Can someone tell me again… slowly... why is it here?I gather you don't mean on the metaphysical level, like:
"Why does anything exist?" (ask a major philosopher… or God?) or
"Why is anything where it is?" (ask the city planner... or the wife?)
I'll speak for myself, neither fast nor slow!
I joined Vivaldi.net because it:
-
seemed simple to handle and the "staff" reacted quickly to my questions. It doesn't have the clutter and the complication some
other sites seem to revel in; -
it has a good variety of sections I intend to use in the future;
-
it appears to be more independent than some of the the major sites
you mention. No ads at this point, and the e-mail has been put out of
reach (legally at least) of government snoopers such as the NSA and
CSEC. Not that I have anything to hide, but I believe that personal
privacy is a "sine qua non" component of any democratic society; -
more superficially, as a classical music lover, I thought the name
had a nice ring to it!
To each his/her own, of course, but that is what appeals to me on
Vivaldi.net. I sincerely hope it will keep those features.Best regards.
Chris

I was about to respond, but you nailed it with this one. I can rest my case…for now. Thanks!

Oh it was just because of a browser that my.opera started. But not just any browser. Sure one can use any of the other sites for doing anything they have been designed for. But there was something that browser provided and that was one of the reasons why I kept using older and multiple versions of Opera. And the same something was mirrored in the site and most of it we found back here in Vivaldi. It is called customizable. Sure, as a nerd one can/could do similar things with firefox of-course. But for the more broad focused people imho, without that much effort one could do it with even a rather restricted device like a feature phone, in/with Opera. And I agree that vivaldi is (still) far from perfect in those aspects. But it can at least grow based on the input of users. I suspect this is as close to the real answer as we may get for a while. Vivaldi seems to be holding his cards close to his chest.
Whatever the point, and as my old buddy Nilsson says, "Everything's Got 'Em" , I am finding it an enjoyable, community oriented place (which I like) and I sincerely hope it develops and matures to something as enjoyable and useful as I found myOpera is/was.
Even made new friends here.
For now the little I post will be here. -
Wake me if a Vivaldi browser for desktop PC running on Linux ever appears.
 -
Don't know what's the point, however we all need a browser that is:
1 - Secure
2 - Light
3 - Fast
4 - Privacy respectful
5 - Cross-platform
6 - Customizable
7 - Esthetically pleasingFor many years there was one answer: Opera. Today the answer is: there's no such thing.
In the near future (maybe) something with a famous opera composer name solve the problem….

While I cannot speak for Vivaldi or its great thinkers, I can speak as a new member about why I joined recently to offer a few comments.
First and foremost attraction for me: Jon was a great influence at Opera and My Opera, and I am curious to see what his latest efforts end up doing. Although I have not personally met Jon, I have read a few things and I've been impressed with his tech skills plus a generous heart. To me, he seems worth watching.
Second, I really like the idea of centering a service like Vivaldi in Iceland, away from the USA and to an extent even far from the EU. Independence seems the surest way to find neutrality, and neutrality is the coin of the cyber realm, in my view. Most systems arise from the narrow agenda of their owners, and any public service benefits amount to collateral offerings or necessary means to larger ends. In Vivaldi's case, at least in its infancy, no particular agenda aside from filling the Opera vacuum seems evident. If Vivaldi can sustain its neutral tone but also find appropriate sources of revenue, I believe it may offer a nascent but exciting alternative for the world.
Third, and perhaps the basic motive for most human conduct, is that it seems sort of fun. I like the personalities I have found on Vivaldi so far. Don't get me wrong; I have been a warrior most of my adult life, watching how inhuman we can be to one another across the globe, so I have no illusions about human virtue or the noble nature of humanity. Nonetheless, so far as a new guy around here, I have not found any truly repulsive candidates and I have found some fairly friendly souls.

Much food for thought.

Actually I have to ask myself what is the point of Vivaldi. I had a few small blogs on MyOpera, mainly links to things and not blogs in the normal sense. These are already on Wordpress together with the photo albums I wanted to keep. I did try the photo albums here but currently Wordpress seems a better place. I can use Vivaldi as an alternate SMTP server for the odd times when my normal one gets on blacklists because of spamming - but if spammers start targetting Vivaldi email servers that will be in the same category.
Ideally I would like Vivaldi to take over from the Opera forums as support for Opera Presto. Yes, there is some of that here, but the forums are currently little more than general computer discussions that can be found in plenty of other places. Yes, good to keep in touch with the old faces from Opera but that seems to be about it at the moment.
I wish Vivaldi success, especially if they do launch a browser, but without some specific goal it likely won't last long.
And I see they have postponed the closure of MyOpera until March 3rd, presumably because the 1st is a Saturday..

I challenge you to click on Blogs and then scroll through the pages that are presented. In just a few weeks it would appear that everything here on Vivaldi has changed and not for the better. Not only has SPAM increased exponentially, but non-English blogs (many of which appear to be little more than SPAM) are now monopolizing that section so that it is actually rather difficult to navigate through it. How is it that MyOpera managed to hide this from my eyes? Was the default language over there English and all non-English blogs and posts were consigned to other areas of the community? Isn't there a way to separate the blogs by language in a way similar to the forum discussions? Then again, maybe I'm using this service incorrectly. How do YOU navigate your way through the Blogs in order to find those of interest to you?

You were looking at the "wrong" page in myOpera. Just take a look here while you are logged in and shudder:
http://my.opera.com/community/blogs/newThe same goes for this:
http://my.opera.com/community/photos/newNo, that is not only because they will close down soon and nobody cares about it any longer, it was like that since for some years now …
... unless one of the unpaid moderators, who is a member here too, had temporarily cleaned up the stuff in a titanic but futile effort.
-
Wow! I had no idea. That's really quite revealing and very discouraging.

I was in a few weeks back to change a profile picture (twice)… that feature seems to no longer work... Perhaps many others along with it as it only has a few weeks of breath left?
