Custom Speed Dial thumbnails – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 1.10.862.6
-
@Gwen-Dragon
Thanks for the info ! We'll se in time then
(Also, nice workaround by putting files in the user profile folder, didn't think of that)
-
I would assume Vivaldi to store them as well. But hey it's a welcome start, and a snapshot after all. Really, been wishing for this since the first time i used a speed dial. Tiny page previews are completely useless to me. It does nothing for me in OS's either when switching programs. But then at least the preview is current!
All that's needed is a label/logo. Clean and to the point. If it would just show the domain name in large bold type with a box around it, that would already be better than page previews if you ask me.
But, if it's going to be fancy. Maybe it can crawl the url for header images that would potentially be logos, then the user could just choose one, and if it would automatically show a crop box - cut it to size as well. Then store it locally as PNG and on Vivaldi Sync.
-
@IcePanther I also agree with this. It would also improve portability. If you move the Vivaldi Portable installation folder to another PC, and images are kept in the profile then they are more likely to be successfully ported, then if they reside in some random external location.
Hope the devs consider changing the behavior, or ideally allow for relative paths support. That way we could get the best of both worlds, both reference original external files, and allow for automatic updating, and if relative paths were to be introduced they would make portability easier.
-
In my opinion, there are way more important improvements needed than storing custom speed dial thumbs. Now we have this option, we can make our own images, and store them wherever we wish. I just save them to my Vivaldi root folder for now. I don't even bother with backups as I can regenerate them from the source file that I used to create them.
Advanced features can come later, but for now, the developers should move on to other issues rather than spending more time on this.

I just had a strange, first time experience. Suddenly Vivaldi started to download all links I clicked - instead of showing the page...
In the end I stopped and restarted Vivaldi, and everything is fine again ...Win7x64 Vx32

@d0j0p: Good point, makes sense. Have you reported it maybe? If not, could you report and provide issue number? Thanks.
-
@dystasia: Hi, could you report these ideas (each one separately) via the vivaldi.com/bugreport form?

I also think, over time it will gain improvements, but it does not have to be a priority! What I wanted was to have an option to hide * x *, because sometimes I accidentally delete it.
-
@JuniorSilva30 Yes, and now we need an option to hide the change thumbnail image icon, as well as the delete and refresh icons. They are useful when first setting up Speed Dials, but distracting and potentially problematic once you have carefully configured your custom thumbnails. The right-click menu is adequate for occasional use.

Hi guys! Will you ever implement an optional proper, native GUI on every platform you support? I mean the scroll bars, context menus, the tab bar being merged with the title bar of the window and such. Without any color schema, just perfect fitting into the given OS.
Since the guys at Opera just trashed everything they had with the GUI, it would be a good reason to switch.
-
@Nekomajin I would love to see Vivaldi implemented with native widgets.
That said, the reality is that UI code is a pain to write, especially when you have to implement custom widgets for things like "Tab Stacks" using native toolkits... and not just once but multiple times for each platform that you support. With a platform-agnostic approach using web technologies, new concepts can be implemented faster, the same code can be applied to all platforms, and all platforms get the same features at the same time. It allows a small development team to be much more agile and productive.
Maybe they can figure out a "hybrid approach" that will allow them to implement more nativeness over time while also improving platform integration. Or maybe not... but a person can dream!

deletes post
(I see someone else already opened a bug ticket on the issue with opening 2 browser windows at the same time.) -
@bdot: Known and multi-multi-multi reported bug. As a workaround, use ctrl+n for a new window instead.
-
STILL no fix for the mouse- and rocker gestures-bugs? Are you kidding me? [VB-28135] [VB-26444].
These bugs make Vivaldi very annoying to use and they didn't exist in 1.8 snapshots.

@xyzzy
I know it's a personal taste, but I don't mind if certain features (like tab stacking or color schemas) are permanently disabled in native mode. I really hate to use a software, which does not fit into the system design. -
@milkb0at: Sorry, it slipped my mind that this would be a problem. Working on fixing it now.
-
I just wanted to say I love you and again, thank you for all the work you do for us
PS. When can we expect synchronization? -
@mozzer Not really right now. Copying would just lead to bug reports about creating needless and redundant copies of files instead. We'll see if it possible to make it an option or something when selecting an image.
-
@ThePineappleGuy turns out, I had some free time, and actually did some work for a change Here's the thread I was talking about earlier (created by someone else, though).
-
@ian-coog: Personally, I put them in a OneDrive synchronized folder which is with me on any installation. How is having a fixed directory with the images a problem?
