Minor update to Vivaldi 1.9
-
@cqoicebordel: as far as i can remember, the previous privacy policies said we can disable diagnostics report. So now it's no more possible...
-
@ra-mon: If that is the case, it's a really, really bad move from them. Because removing the last octet (octet ? Not byte ?) from the IP address is worthless when using the rest of the informations to do fingerprinting.
Even worse, given the stats of usage right now, there would be only one Vivaldi user in a /24. So, scrambling the last byte is again, worthless. -
@cqoicebordel: The setting was misleading. We never collected anything except for the purpose of being able to count users, as described. The problem was that people would see the setting, think it was something else, and turn it off, making it impossible for us to count users.
-
@ra-mon: There are no diagnostic reports. The problem was that the setting was misleading.
-
@liyin: We removed a misleading setting. We take our users privacy very seriously and there was a setting that indicated we were doing more than we are doing. We do want to know how many users we have and where we live, but we do not monitor usage patterns.
-
@jon: Thanks for the clarification...
-
@jon: In that case, you should only collect the unique ID, and that's all. The others elements should be optional.
The solution to that kind of problem shouldn't be less privacy, it should be better labeled options. -
@cqoicebordel: We also want to know where in the world our users are and what OS they are running. It is quite helpful to know that we have a lot of Linux users and that Japan is our largest country.

@jon Are there any interesting platform-specific enhancements in the works aimed at attracting more Mac users to Vivaldi?
-
@xyzzy: Generally we try to be as local to the platform as possible, while maintaining the same feature set and look and feel across the different platforms.
We hope to continue adding features to all platforms that make Vivaldi more attractive to all users. Please make sure to tell us what you want to see.
-
@jon Thanks! I'm always happy to help in any way that I can.

Wait, is that true or hypothetical ? If so then you must be doing something right with the Language support.
-
If "Report Diagnostics setting" was misleading from the beginning, bring it back as optional "Debug" option. In case of Vivaldi crash (who wants it activated manually) to send Debug Info to you for troubleshooting.
I had crashes/restarts occasionally, but never bother to open topic on support forum about it. I am kazy, as many other Vivaldi Users. -
I do not care what you collect! I'm no criminal! Do not have nothing to hide! If I wanted privacy I would never have connected to the internet!
I think you just want to know how many users have assets and what system and country, I do not see any problem!
If this is to improve Vivaldi keep it that way!
I do not even understand the people who want privacy, nowadays this is almost impossible! Once on the internet it was already!Great job team Vivaldi!
Vivaldi is a serious project! So I guess you do not have to worry! Jon has cleared the doubts of the users, Jon is a serious guy, many years of work and respect conquered!
I think everything is fine here!
Keep up the great work! The browser looks better and better with every update! -

It seems you are disingenuous. To gather information about the OS and countries, it is enough to analyze the statistics of the distribution downloads from Vivaldi site. To do this, you do not need to embed non-disablable sending of data from the browser.
Are the domain locks update.vivaldi.com enough to disable the sending of all tracking information?
-
@jon: I find it fascinating Japan is Vivaldi's largest country (happily since I have a deep connection Japan). The Japanese Vivaldi local forum isn’t the largest so it isn’t obvious. Have you got any idea why? I can't really imagine why.
-
@BiTOk As an organization, Vivaldi is pretty transparent. I don't think that they're gathering much more data than they could already through downloads and update checks -- just doing it in a simpler, less error-prone, platform-independent way.

@g_bartsch Co-founder Tatsuki is Japanese. Perhaps he's known there (or has various marketing connections there) the way Jon is in Norway and Iceland (other high-adoption countries).
