Last Session Not getting restored
-
I am facing a very grave problem of the last session not getting restored. This is frustrating, besides, there seems to be no solution available on the net. The browser is unusable until this problem is fixed. Please HELP!

I assume you're talking about the lost tabs and not some website that you're being logged out of after restarting the browser?
I don't have such problems on my PC. Keep in mind that Vivaldi will restore only the last closed window - if you close a window with the tabs that you wanted to preserve before closing every other window, the tabs would not be restored. You should be able to restore them manually, using the "trash" icon (by default it is located in the upper right corner of the browser window). There should be an entry called "Window with x Tabs" and that's where you should find all the tabs that were not restored automatically.
If you're still dealing with this issue, here's what you could try to resolve this:
- Make sure that your "Startup with" settings in vivaldi://settings/startup/ are set to "Last session".
- Disable all extensions (if this resolves your issue, then try enabling them one by one to check which one is causing the trouble);
- Clear the browsing data, open a few tabs and restart the browser to see if they are restored;
- Refresh your profile;
- Try another instance of Vivaldi to check if the issue occurs there too - preferably the latest Snapshot (you can download it from here). Don't update your current Vivaldi! Install new instance as "standalone", so that it doesn't interfere with your current installation. You can easily get rid of it later by removing the folder where it was installed.

@hari_ghk -- I agree with pretty much all that pafflick advised you, but i have an additional suggestion as well, in order to protect you in certain rare but still painful incidents.
Today my Tower suffered a complete system freeze, such that i had to hard-reset it. Once it was back up again, & i'd reopened all my pgms including V-SS, i was shocked to see that it was an empty session [i'd had 35 open tabs, including pinned, stacked & renamed]. Worse, the Trash failed to include the usual "Window with x Tabs" item [not V's fault, but the system freeze, i believe]. I know i could have manually, tediously, rebuilt my session from History, but i didn't need to, due to one of the extensions i've used since 2015 in V... Session Buddy [i have used V-SS as my default browser since Feb 2015, but initially no extensions were possible]. All i had to do was one-click & all my tabs were restored [i still had to re-stack the relevant ones, then rename them, though the pinned ones were still properly pinned].
In 2015 V was pretty unstable sometimes & crashes with data loss were frequent, which was why i installed SB. Since then V has become immensely more solid & reliable... several times i have pondered finally removing SB, but i always still keep it, just in case. Today it worked its magic for me again. FYI.

complete system freeze
I'm glad I don't have such issues with my
WINDOWS PC
Good point with the extension, though...

@pafflick
Your assumption is right, I was indeed talking about lost tabs! I have done all the process mentioned by you except the snapshot part (I did not understand the exact nature of your suggestion). I have noticed that the problem of lost tabs occurs after a complete shutdown of the laptop! I have to test that bit as I am in the midst of work! I will let you know the outcome and send you a feedback later.In the meanwhile, a big thanks to you and @Steffie for all the help!

@hari_ghk Some time ago one MAC user reported similar issue - their session was not saved/restored after restarting/shutting down the computer. Someone else claimed that they resolved it by disabling one of their extensions (I'm not sure about the OP, though).
My other guess would be that you're shutting down the system while Vivaldi processes are still running in the background, even though you closed the browser and its window disappeared already. You might want to check this in the Windows Task Manager (
[CTRL]
+[SHIFT]
+[ESC]
). If the processes are still there, wait until they're all gone before you shut down your device. -
@pafflick Unfortunately, the problem still persists! I have a host of extensions installed, probably I may have to iterate the problem by disabling each extension one by one, I like to use V since it has got a powerful "Reader Mode" which is of great use for my work, otherwise I would have used Chrome (though Chrome has a camouflaged utility called "Distill Page") it is not reliable and often gives wrong outputs.
I will follow your instructions and wait for V to close completely and then shutdown the Laptop! Thanking you!

@pafflick I guess Vivaldi must address this issue definitively since if I do not find a suitable solution I may have to switch to another browser (say as an example MX5, which has a powerful "Reader Mode" but has other umpteen issues). But I can live with those issue rather than losing tabs after every session!

To do that, they need to reproduce the bug first. As I said before - I haven't had such problems with my PC, so it must be either something with your computer or something that you do, that causes this bug. You might need to find this first before anyone could try to repair that.
-
Vivaldi has no way to address it unless you can link it to the specific extension which is causing it.
-
-
@hari_ghk: Feedback is sent to Vivaldi crew by filing a bug report. There is no automated reporting through the browser.
-
@l8braker I have circumvented this problem by using an extension "Session Buddy", it is simple to use and a powerful tool. This should solve the issue!
-
@hari_ghk -- Ahem, if only i'd thought of recommending exactly that to you before...
