[Solved] What are akamaitechnologies & amazonaws; should i be concerned?

  • I suspect this might apply to all flavours of V, but as i use Linux i've posted in the Linux stream [just in case it is Linux-specific]. I use Net Activity Viewer 0.6.4 [ ] to keep an eye on things, & from this i am aware that when browsing, there's a very large number of connections made to & ... see pics following, for examples. What are these, should i be concerned about them, & if so, what can i do about them? In previous months i made various attempts to block them in my Linux firewall, but i failed miserably; it was just like whack-a-mole, in that each time i blocked one IP address, almost instantly those remote hosts simply opened a new connection with a new IP. Back then i more or less gave up, but remain generally bothered about what might be going on... ....................................................................................... My on-SSD OS = Linux Mint x64 17.3 KDE 4.14.2. Attachments: [img][/img],[img][/img]

  • Akamai Technologies (aka akamaitechnologies) is a Content Delivery Network to help speedup websites. See Akamai Technologies Wikipedia article.

Amazon Web Services (aka amazonaws) is a subsidiary of Amazon, see Amazon Web Services Wikipedia article. Which provides public cloud computing to the websites you visit.

  • Thank you. So it would appear that if i wish to continue using the web, i need to just accept that those services are inevitable, & hence no need for me to worry about them. I suppose that means i can just go back to worrying about other stuff now instead, like dangerous anthropomorphic climate change, the absurdity of economic trickle-down theory, the immorality & vacuity of the Oz misgovernment, et al. Your help is appreciated.

  • Well, I mean, you can blocked them at the cost of site functionality. IE, some sites video players don't show up or missing images. Etc, etc, etc.

But sure, I guess you can focus on those issues instead :)
