Vivaldi won't run - how to log the app start?
-
Thank you, @yngve! What does it mean in practice? Is there anything I can do as a user to overcome this issue?
-
@mikolajek I don't know; I am not familiar with the error.
However, given the description my suspicion is that some third-party application is editing the Vivaldi executable somehow.
Hmmm, .... I just noticed that you have installed Vivaldi in the program files system program dirs.
That means that you have to run the updater as Administrator.

I actually act as an admin with my current profile with minimum security restraints. For daily work, I have a "lamer" profile with little privileges but for any system works I use this one.
I'm wondering if I'm the only user impacted by this - if so, it means Windows re-install I presume... Well, it's high time to do so (it's been up for almost two years without issues), but...
if anyone else reading this thread has similar problem, I'm happy to seek solution together.
Thanks for your precious help, @DoctorG, @mib2berlin, and @yngve!

@mikolajek It may still be an idea to run vivaldi and/or its updater with right-click->run as administrator
AFAIK the Administrator update requirement (which is a Windows OS requirement, not a Vivaldi one) bites a lot of people that installed Vivaldi for all users. One have to be careful when doing that particular installation.

My recent clear install was with admin privileges. I tried to run Vivaldi as an admin but it didn't change anything . I've seen some advice on the forums to change user rights for all Vivaldi-related folders, but honestly I'm not sure if it does more harm than good.

@mikolajek You can install Vivaldi for Current User on your Windows. No need to install as Administrator for All Users.
Remove the installation in Administrator account. Install with Vivaldi installer, it lets you select Advanced
and "Install per User".
I have a Install for User in my Administrator account and all runs and updates nice. -
Huh, that's the latest "achievement" I had.... Vivaldi installed for the current user only and run as admin (running as a regular user ends up as usual). I don't need to add that clicking "Force startup" is pointless...
I do feel now I've been selected as a guinea pig for some secret testing plan, not sure of its intent yet, though!

@mikolajek Perhaps the confirmation window is under this progress popup. Grab the progressbar popup and drag up to check if it covers an other window.
I has such a few days ago and i wondered why Vivaldi did not close/restart.

No, do not start with Explorer'S context menu or similar "Run as Administrator" feature!
Login with your Administrator account
Install Vivaldi Per User
Start Vivaldi
Exit VivaldiSimilar with your regular Windows user accounts.

@DoctorG, a valuable trick but the effect is the same
Most likely I'm a victim of some unusual configuration, I can't explain it otherwise.
