Visiting my.nextdns.io causing Vivaldi for Android to Crash
-
@mib2berlin Do I opt in within Vivaldi or in the phones settings?
-
@mackid1993
As far as I understand you need an account on the Google Play Console.
I start to setup an account but as last step they ask for 25$, haha.
This is for developer want to create Android apps, I stop at this point.
It is maybe easier to root your device, I look into for my device but I need to reset my device and this is a bit to n´much for me at the moment.https://play.google.com/console/u/0/signup
I guess you wait at least 14 days if a developer or tester check your bug report.
-
Thanks. I'll just wait for a developer.

@mackid1993
May I ask if you use PWA on Android too?
We have some reports about PWA, most are upstream from Chromium but some are Vivaldi only. -
I have one PWA on Android but it's for a Photo gallery app that I selfhost internally.

@mib2berlin This gets weirder and weirder. I had a bookmark in my speed dial to https://my.nextdns.io. I deleted that bookmark and without the bookmark going to https://my.nextdns.io Vivaldi for Android DOESN'T crash. If I add the bookmark back to my speed dial using that bookmark causes Vivaldi for Android to crash.
Can you test by adding a bookmark to your speed dial for me to NextDNS and let me know if you can reproduce now??
EDIT: It's only Speed Dial bookmarks, a bookmark not in speed dial works just fine. If you can't reproduce than my bookmarks are corrupted. Before I redid my profile I exported my bookmarks to HTML and reimported them.
EDIT 1: I made a new speed dial folder and added NextDNS to it and the crash still does happen. This is the bug, the site only crashes when it has a speed dial bookmark.

@mackid1993
Adding NextDNS to the speed dial folder, restart Vivaldi 6.1.3035.277, open the page does not crash Vivaldi for me.
This is really a strange behave what Vivaldi do on your device.
Just for fun I add the page to my old Android 8.1 device and no crash there, too.
At least you have a workaround.
You can add this information to the bug report in the usual way. -
@mib2berlin I narrowed it down further. I can make a bookmark in my speed dial to http://my.nextdns.io with no crash. If it make https://my.nextdns.io it crashes. The second I take the "s" out of the bookmark it's fine the page will still load https. Once I add the "s" into my bookmark immediate crash.
-
@mackid1993
The URL is saved as HTTPS in my speed dial.
I have "Always use secure connection" disabled and "Use secure DNS" set to Automatic.
I guess this will make no difference. -
@mib2berlin It's very strange, well at least I have a workaround now. I replied to the bug report with the info about it only happening with the bookmark in my speed dial with the https:// in the bookmark. Could you please confirm that this made it into my report? Hopefully this info can help the dev's narrow down the cause of the crash.
It seems that from what I can tell crash reports seem to take a higher priority over other bugs.

@mackid1993
All OK with the report, that works reliably. -
Ok great. Would you suggest I try deleting my bookmarks and recreating them or is that probably not worth it?
-
@mib2berlin I exported my bookmarks, deleted everything, emptied the trash and recreated https://my.nextdns.io under Speed Dial and it still happens.
-
@mib2berlin I just spoke with another Vivaldi user who has a Samsung Android 13 Phone over on a Discord for another community I am apart of and he was able to reproduce the issue. He said the bookmark has to be for https://my.nextdns.io and NOT https://my.nextdns.io/login.
It may have something to do with the way the Favicon is being parsed.
Make sure you have your bookmark set just to https://my.nextdns.io without the /login part.
He will post his findings in this thread later on today. I'm just glad someone else was able to reproduce!
-
Yep, I'm the user who could produce. I opened a tab to https://my.nextdns.io/login. Nothing happened. Added https://my.nextdns.io/login to my bookmarks, nothing happened. Opened my speed dial and added https://my.nextdns.io/login, nothing happened.
Opened my speed dial and added https://my.nextdns.io, and then Vivaldi crashed when I clicked the speed dial.
-
@mackid1993 @ukanuk
I finally could reproduce it with https://my.nextdns.io as speed dial.
@ukanuk are you able to get a crash log on your device?
Please add your Vivaldi, Android version and your device.I will confirm the bug report now and add information if needed.
Cheers, mib
-
@mib2berlin Thank you. I'm glad you were able to reproduce the crash.
Thank you for posting here @ukanuk!

@mib2berlin said in Visiting my.nextdns.io causing Vivaldi for Android to Crash:

How do I do this? Reading up through the previous comments, it looks like Google Play Store automatically collects logs. And if you want them manually, you have to either sign up for developer stuff for $25 or root your phone. I'm not going to do either of those options.
My device details are:
Samsung Galaxy S21 5G
Android 13, July 2023 security patch level

@ukanuk
