Solved ISSUE: I cannot upload any themes to vivaldi://settings/themes
-
@Vivaldiscool The timing of the frames doesn't matter much in terms of file size. That is just how long each frame is visible.
Along the top bar, under
Edit
, you can useRemove Duplicates
andReduce Frame Count
to get rid of extra frames. UnderImage
, you can useResize
orCrop
to shrink the size of the frames. And under
File
, when you selectSave As
to export the GIF, there are several settings that can help. Reducing the number of colors it is allowed to use and enablingDetect unchanged pixels
should help. -
@Vivaldiscool Might help if you shared the ZIP file you're trying to upload and let us check it here.
Your GIF file is probably much too large.
Although, these days I would suspect a well-compressed MP4 would in fact take up less space than a GIF and look much better - and might even have less CPU overhead. But GIFs is all that's allowed in themes...

@Vivaldiscool Hi, did you solve this?
If you did, please mark your topic as Solved.

@Pathduck No, not yet.
-
@Vivaldiscool Sure, but if it's caused by you being unable to make a theme that fits within the limits it should be marked as solved.
The guide states:
Processing the theme failed. How do I fix it?
Alternatively, the theme file (ZIP) might be too big (due to the background image) or the background image is in an unsupported format. Resize or replace the background image, create a new ZIP file and upload the theme again.Which file formats are accepted for the background image and what's the size limit?
The background image can be in the following formats: JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, WEBP.
The image size should stay below 8MB.
https://themes.vivaldi.net/faqSo there's nothing Vivaldi can do about you creating too large a theme.

The only solution I see is to upload the theme without the background (or with a static one) and link the mp4 animated wallpaper externally (mega/gdrive/ecc) with all its high resolution. Also, converting it as a GIF never was a good idea: the format was born with 256 colors and low frame rates. So, very very poor compression ratio.

@Hadden89, as you said:
and link the mp4 animated wallpaper externally (mega/gdrive/ecc) with all its high resolution.
Okay, I'll try that.
Also, converting it as a GIF never was a good idea: the format was born with 256 colors and low frame rates. So, very very poor compression ratio.
.gif file or .mp4?

@Vivaldiscool You can't use MP4 files for background images in themes, this was already established.
Can you share the original MP4 file you want to use?
-
It doesn't matter,
I'll just use a theme from theme.vivaldi.net.
