[bug] saving a web page freezes browser window
-
Environment:
- current Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS
- vivaldi-stable 5.7.2921.65-1 amd64
Symptom:
Since a few days, any Vivaldi window consistently freezes / hangs after saving a page.Context:
- the save as such does work
- I found no way to unfreeze the window
- the process in that last tab eats a lot of cpu
- killing the tab produces the dead bird, but window is still unresponsive
- other browser windows do work - until I save a page from there
-
@pklausner
Hi, what do you meant by "Save a Page" ,bookmark it, save as .html, screenshot?Cheers, mib
-
@mib2berlin I missed that detail:
I used Ctrl-S (Save page as) to save html only. I'll check if the file type makes any difference. -
@pklausner
NP, I get no freeze using Ctrl+S at random page on a clean profile, no extensions, 5.7.2921.65-1.
Test this in a private window or the guest view, this except extensions and use the default settings.https://help.vivaldi.com/article/guest-view/
Cheers, mib
-
@mib2berlin, still the same symptom using
- different file types to save
- disabled all extensions
- switched to guest mode
-
@pklausner
Hm, some user report freeze but completely random.
Can you test it with disabled hardware acceleration in:
vivaldi://settings/webpages/
It´s just a guess.Cheers, mib
-
@mib2berlin, no, turning off hardware acceleration does not fix the issue.
-
@pklausner
Hrm, we need other Ubuntu user to test this, it make no sense to report it to the bug tracker.
I am on Opensuse, KDE.
As Vivaldi tester I would close the report as: Cant reproduce.Cheers, mib
-
@mib2berlin - yes, it may well be a problem with Ubuntu/Gnome.
I didn't notice immediately that the problem came with a fix of a different issue of the save dialog:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/chromium-browser/+bug/1949340
Still, could be a bad interworking with the way it's called. -
@pklausner I remember some users who have no dialog window for other cases.
Thanks for sharing the bug tracker link of the file dialog window bug on Ubuntu 22.

@pklausner
Hi, I am not sure if this is involved but can you open:
chrome://settings and search for "gtk"?
It should be set to "Classic", try to change it to GTK, restart.
It may open a different save as window, I cant test this with KDE.Cheers, mib
-
@mib2berlin - switched the theme from Classic to GTK, same freeze behaviour
-
@pklausner I can not reproduce this with Ubuntu 22 LTS Cinnamon. No freeze.
Can you try:
- Open vivaldi://flags/#disable-accelerated-2d-canvas
Set to Enabled - Open vivaldi://flags/#canvas-oop-rasterization
Set to Disabled
and restart Vivaldi. Does this help?
- Open vivaldi://flags/#disable-accelerated-2d-canvas
-
@DoctorG -
- vivaldi://flags/#disable-accelerated-2d-canvas was enabled, disabling did not help
- vivaldi://flags/#canvas-oop-rasterization Set to Disabled neither, nor
- switching back from X11 to Wayland
- Interestingly, opening a new tab from the commandline does work, though the gui stays completely unresponsive
-
@pklausner Please open vivaldi://flags and reset all flags!
Does enabling vivaldi://flags/#ignore-gpu-blocklist and restart help?Which error messages do you see?
Start in shell with
vivaldi
-
vivaldi://flags/#ignore-gpu-blocklist
- This flag does not exist with my 5.7.2921.65, V8 11.0.226.20
- Resetting all flags did not make any differencce.
- Even though the 'Save' dialog always looks the same, I could not yet find another Ubuntu app, which exhibits the same problem.
-
@pklausner
Hi, if you open vivaldi://flags it is the third entry, Override software rendering list.
The latest version is Vivaldi 5.7.2921.68 but this is only a security update, it did not change flags.Cheers, mib
-
@mib2berlin - sorry, I only skimmed the headlines and overlooked the hashtags at the bottom of each entry.
Enabling #ignore-gpu-blocklist did not help.
-
Argh. Pasting the full URL would have given me the correct setting right away...

@pklausner
Hi, you can install the snapshot version of Vivaldi, it is complete independent of your Vivaldi stable install.
If this work something in your user data is broken not only your profile.
Sometimes simply a reinstall of Vivaldi help, this does not touch your user data.
If this or the snapshot still freeze I am out of ideas.
It´s always a good idea to backup your profile folder "Default" in .config/vivaldiCheers, mib
