Browser links multiplying

wtf, another vivaldi gem:
one of the search engines that I use is duckduckgo.. It is default. I am finding that everytime vivaldi opens it creates another instance of duckduckgo. close, open, close, open: more and more search engine links. -
@astro46 Where do these instances or "links" of duckduckgo appear? Typically many users have a search box on the address bar or just search from the address box... or is it creating new duplicate entries within the search engine selector part of the search box?

good question and it wouldn't have been needed if I hadn't neglected to attach the screen shot:
-
@astro46 Wow, I've never seen anything like that happen, but I do use Startpage as default search if that even matters. (Win10-64 22H2 with latest Vivaldi Stable.)

I use DDG and have never seen this!!
So this happens even if you do not search? What about extensions? Try guest view

it happens when starting vivaldi. , not by searching. as i explained in original post.
-
@astro46 Do you use any extensions?
I can't reproduce this. Once upon a time, many moons ago, two or three of the search engines would get duplicated with each update, but spawing a new search engine copy with every start - that's just nuts. Never seen it.

A possible glitch with the "Web Data" file?
-
@astro46 Hi! It sounds like something is broken with your search engine store or you are having some stuck migration from the old search engine storage.
Could you consider sharing with me the WebData file as well as the "Local App Settings\mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli" folder from your profile? This would allow me to reproduce and hopefully solve this issue.
Do note that the WebData file may contain sensitive data as it also stores the autofill information. If that is a concern, dumping its contents and sending me only the "keywords" table would be enough.

I am not seeing how to send the folder/file to you directly.
When you say the webdata file stores autofill info, do you mean un/pw? or something else? I don't autofill un/pw through vivaldi, so webdata file wouldn't be containing this info? if i need to dump contents and send only the "keywords" table, how would I do this?
I was about i re-install vivaldi and copy back the existing default folder, but if the problem is in those file/folders then they would simply be copied back.
I am not seeing this problem on 3 other vivaldi installs here, so it must be local. If copying these file/folders from a different installation will fix it , I could do that. Or maybe this would create other issues?
edit: i just copied over the webdata file from a different system. the problem continues

@astro46 If the problem is in your profile and you DON'T copy over the webdata file, the following procedure may well fix it:

as noted above I have already copied a webdata file from another computer over the existing on the problem computer. situation the same.
-
@astro46 I am recommending the exact opposite of that. Refresh the profile to get rid of all extraneous influences. DO NOT copy over the webdata file - only things like bookmarks, cookies, history and login data. No extensions, no preferences, no nothing but critical data.
In fact, if you have synced instances, you may really need to copy over practically nothing. The idea is to get rid of the offending profile and replace it with a virgin one that has acquired no bad habits.
-
@Ayespy is there a way to save all settings? there have been more changes over time than i can remember. or remember how I did them.
-
@astro46 The last thing you want to save is settings. That's where profile pollution lies. Sorry, but you will have to select those newly. I find it normally takes me about eight or nine minutes to do that on a new virgin copy of the browser.
-
@Ayespy right. but you know your way around better than I , and remember what you changed, and to what.
-
@astro46 Still, I think you will find it 'way less problematic than you imagine. Anything you forget in the moment, you will recall over the next two or three days of use. And in each such instance, a 20-second recourse to Settings will square it for you.
The thing is, do you want a browser without the bug or not? A profile refresh practically guarantees a fix. It takes minutes. On the other hand, you can go back and forth with mods and the Team for days on end and never find the source of such a rare problem. And I do mean rare. So far, you are the only person to ever report it as nearly as I can tell. So, I'm just sayin ' . . .

- I made a copy of the defective default folder. the renamed the 'default' folder
- started viv. it opened as new install. no multiple copies of duckduckgo (ddg)
- I proceeded to copy 'important' folders from the renamed default folder into new folder. also, Local App Settings folder, and Storage/ext/mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli/def/IndexedDB
- restarted viv multiple times. no duplicates of ddg. however, my saved web panels, pinned tabs, and extensions were missing. not sure about other settings, since I didn't take time to investigate.
-as an experiment, I made a copy of this modified default folder, and proceeded to manually sync my laptop to the problem computer, as I do normally once a week, to make viv the same on both computers. (I know, its not an approved process. but it works, and vivaldi sync fails) - open viv on the problem computer, and all is back to normal except for extensions, which I had to reinstall. web panels and pinned tabs are back, and seemingly settings.
-a number of viv restarts has not shown the problem to occur. hopefully this will continue.
apparently whatever happens when viv starts and has to create a new default folder has fixed the problem. And apparently none of the files/folders that I sync are causes. Not surprising since the laptop didn't have the problem.
I wish i knew why syncing the 2 computers brought back the web panels and pinned tabs, when copying the same files/folders from the defective default folder didn't do that.
thanks for the help and inspiration to produce the new default folder.
-
@astro46 Excellent. It was risky to copy over Local App Settings, but I'm glad that worked out for you.
And yay on having finally evicted this pesky bug.
-
@Ayespy That's why I always recommend the snapshot version, it will always be better in all things.
