I suppose it's still the same? It's : VB-89245
Or should I open a new bugreport? I also wonder why Pesala removed his post, did he came to the conclusion that there is indeed still a problem?

Yes.

Will this bug ever be fixed? It's still present on sites like www.ad.nl and www.justwatch.com, very annoying!
-
@RasheedHolland Had you reported the issue as a new bug? Which bug number?

Sorry, totally forgot to reply but I don't know the bug number anymore, this stuff should be in my email right? Would be cool if this stuff was handled on this forum. But anyway, it still hasn't been fixed in Vivaldi 5.5.2805.44, this is getting embarrassing. Just try to search for the text on the pics on these websites, you will not get to see the correct ''right click'' context menu. At least, you won't get to see the ''Search Google for'' option.

Yes.
-
@RasheedHolland it's an issue with combined elements, selected text on those sites is nested
- link
- img+text
So the menu is nested asLink Menu
→Picture Menu
→Text Menu
as well.@DoctorG the expected case on text selection may be to have the imminent (selected text) on top level, but
Link
should still have higher priority thanPicture
.
So not sure how beneficial manual intervention (different order) for grouped elements will be.
At most,Picture
andText
may be moved to the same level (in this case) since they are next to each other (hierarchically).Update:
Marked text in nested HTML elements triggers theSelected Text
entry inImage menu
and propagates to an (additional)Selected Text
entry inLink
.
It does however not trigger display of theSelection menu
inLink
! → this should be considered a Bug -
@RasheedHolland than there is the other annoyance that there are sites with multiple elements at a certain position.
Fixing this would be an unrelated issue:
Prioritizing the text selection instead of theImage
in the same location. At the moment, it is handled identically to
Link
, you get the text selection as nested entry (unless the other bug is triggered). -
Come on guys, this is getting silly. How come you still can't select text on certain websites and search for it? Because Vivaldi wrongly assumes it's actually an image that is selected. This bug has been present for months and nobody cares. This is making Vivaldi look bad.
For example, try to select text on top of an image on ad.nl (Dutch newspaper), you won't get to see the ''search Google for'' function in the right click menu. And on justwatch.com you will somehow get to see ''Selected Text'' in the right click menu, this also shouldn't be the case. Make sure to select the text Nope (2022) on top of the page on JustWatch.
-
Another weird example is on the White Castle website. For some reason when you try to search for PANKO BREADED FISH SLIDER, it won't always be possible. It's almost like it depends on your mouse pointer placement.
-
Just for the record, you guys can reproduce this, right?
-
Either I am misunderstand your instructions to reproduce the issue or it is not reproducible.
FYI: this is what I see on AD's site when I select an image and the text following it:
then righting clicking on text area of selections shows the search options:
and right clicking anywhere else shows:
-
I'm afraid you did indeed misunderstand. You should copy the text that is written on top of the image. Then you will see that there is no way to select and search for this text. And did you also check out justwatch.com? Vivaldi should not show a dropdown menu in the right click dialog window, no other browser does this.

Some websites block copying feature.
In Chromium i can not even select text on ad.nl. -

Some websites block copying feature.
In Chromium i can not even select text on ad.nl.Yes, but that's not relevant in this thread. It's a bug that was introduced in Vivaldi almost 6 months ago, and they never bothered to fix it. So basically, Vivaldi wrongly assumes you can't copy text, because the text is written on top of an image. This really makes Vivaldi look bad, where is the quality control? And you should be able to select text on ad.nl, so something is wrong with your Chromium browser.

Tested both and can confirm what you said. Seems the image behind the text gets preference over the text. So while the "selected text" menu option that is available on Justwatch is a decent workaround, the same doesn't work for ad.nl.
-
@RasheedHolland, okay I see what your mean now, for example the text highlighted in green below cannot be searched for via right click menu option:
As issue is reproducible consider raising as a bug and in the meantime use a workaround of:
- press
F2
orCtrl
+E
to access Quick Commands - type
Search with section
and select corresponding option
If appropriate consider setting shortcut key for Search with selection
- press

OK thanks for confirming. This issue has now been merged with this other topic I opened almost a year ago. You will also see this problem on nu.nl and beursgorilla.nl, as I mentioned earlier. And even on JustWatch it shouldn't work like this, so I wouldn't call it a workaround. This is simply an unacceptable and silly bug.

Yes exactly, as soon as text is on top of a pic, it won't work. And thanks, but I don't like to use workarounds.
