Some sites won't fully load

Some pages not properly loading (blank objects) unless in private window
Some pages that I want to look at keep loading with blank elements and make it unusable. I've had this issue a few years back if I remember correctly, and after a few months it resolved on its own, but now I really don't want to wait months to be able to use my browser normally.
Heres what troubleshooting has taught me about this problem:
- Extensions have nothing to do with it - disabled them all, reloaded, nothing happened
- "Trackers and ads" getting blocked are not the problem - blocking is disabled generally and the same settings apply to my private window
- Cookies are not the issue I believe - I compared the cookies in both private and normal windows on a site with the problem and blocked/removed everything that wasn't in the private settings, nothing happened
- Setting-changes on my part are not behind this - at least I know that I didn't change anything when this started happening, I usually don't touch my settings unless something is wrong, I'm quite content with my browser; so the only option would be an update changing something
- Updates aren't needed - I'm on the newest version of Vivaldi already (5.6.2867.50)
- Restarts don't help - obviously, as the problem has persisted for a few days/weeks now
- The pages are technically not the issue - Vivaldi will load said pages in a private window as I've said, but also when I hover over the affected tab, the preview shows me a perfectly loaded page without issues (but when I click on that, it's broken again); one of the pages will let me see its starting page and even search for the specific article that Vivaldi keeps breaking, but once I try to enter that page, it's broken again; also, sometimes these pages WILL load properly after all, I just have no way of figuring out what changed to fix them and then what changed to break them again the next time I use them
- The PC is not the problem - my laptop on the same version has similar issues, eg. one of the affected pages has "You are seeing this message because ad or script blocking software is interfering with this page." written on it (recovered by copying it into another editor, where I can actually read it), and this message is also displayed on my laptop (although, they might be connected through their settings being synchronized, so that might give me a clue on it)
- My internet connection is not the problem - the pages load properly otherwise and show previews, I can even interact with all the elements on the page (eg. click on links, copy text, insert text, even "move" elements like selected text or pictures and see them while I'm moving them, etc.)
I'm really frustrated at this point since I've gone through all the troubleshooting advice and the only clue I have ("You are seeing this message because ad or script blocking software is interfering with this page.") leads me nowhere bc those settings are already disabled, and re-abling and disabling them also didn't help. Since this is now a recurring issue I would very much like some help with it, as I fear other people might be desparately searching through these forums like me and not be able to find help. I appreciate all clues and attempts at helping me greatly!
Some more information/examples that might be useful:
- I'm on Windows 11 Pro, although the problem also happened on Windows 10 a few years back
- I live in Germany and have stable internet rn
- I'm using Vivaldi on my tower PC with Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-9400F CPU @ 2.90GHz 2.90 GHz, 64-bit (x64)
- Also on my laptop with AMD Ryzen 5 5600H with Radeon Graphics 3.30 GHz, 64-bit (x64)
- Also on my phone, but that's not synchronized and a different system so I won't get into more detail
- The affected pages that bug me the most are wiki pages (eg. [name].fandom.com pages, game8.co/[...], gamewith.net/[...], etc.), which I admit is not THAT severe of a problem (not like I'm gonna die from not getting info on shows/games), but as someone with ADHD who just NEEDS to know everything about everything and thus deep dives regularly, it's driving me insane not being able to access information
- The example with the clue ("You are seeing this message because ad or script blocking software is interfering with this page.") on the other hand is a more problematic page to be affected, as it is a page for some medication I need information on: https://www.drugs.com/medical-answers/vyvanse-start-working-long-3542596/
- But there are also many other examples of pages not loading properly, but usually I can just head to another site with the needed information, so I don't really collect all the links, but they do really bother me; I can start collecting their links though, if that might be helpful to solving this issue
[EDIT] FINAL SOLUTION: Try disabling hardware acceleration in the browser settings if this problem is happening to you; more info in this post.

@buesra24 Hello and Welcome to the Vivaldi Community
All those pages work fine in Vivaldi for me using a clean profile of latest Vivaldi Stable 5.6, Win10 x64 - even if they are full of horrible ads (the game ones, ugh).
Please give concrete examples of pages that do not show properly in Vivaldi. Preferably with full screenshots of your UI so we can see what goes on.
Test in a clean profile too, creating a new profile for testing takes a couple seconds:
https://help.vivaldi.com/desktop/tools/user-profiles/Also use F12 to open developer tools, select the Network tab, then reload the site using Ctrl+F5 and make a screenshot of what you see.
-
@Pathduck Hello and thank you so much for your time!
The test profile (just like the private window) had no issues with the affected pages.
As for the examples, I've included some screenshots below (little elements do keep flashing up when I move my mouse, so there might be some things floating around, especially ones that are not in other pictures of the same page) and did what you said in the developer tools (also screenshots below). There seem to be a few blocked elements and errors, I'm guessing that's what you wanted to find. If it would help to show you what the associated files say, I probably need to upload them elsewhere and link them here, as they are quite long, if that's alright. I also took this opportunity to clear my cache to see if that will do anything, but as expected (I do this somewhat often bc I create HTML newsletters that sometimes get stuck on old versions) nothing changed. (I wasn't able to get screenshots of the gaming websites as they've just ramdomly started working again, I might be able to include them in other replies if needed.)
The page for the meds that I mentioned above (https://www.drugs.com/medical-answers/vyvanse-start-working-long-3542596/):
What the developmer tools look like after a reload:
An example page from the wikis that are affected (https://software.fandom.com/de/wiki/Vivaldi):
What the developmer tools look like after a reload (a handful of entries is cut off in this picture, i couldnt get the window any higher, but there were no errors on those, so I'm guessing they aren't important):

@buesra24 OK so first of all, that's not a clean profile - you clearly have extensions running, including what looks like Adblock as well as "I don't care about cookies".
Second, network requests are being blocked (red lines in dev.tools).
So, test again, clean profile this time.
-
@Pathduck Oh, I'm sorry, I had assumed that since the clean profile didn't have any of the issues, that information wouldn't help much (and disabling the extensions didn't change anything, so I activated them again). Here are the clean screenshots with no extensions:

@buesra24 Ok thanks. I missed the part about it working in a clean profile.
So basically you have two options:
- Spend the necessary time to figure out what is wrong in your current profile - it could be extensions, settings, or simply a "corrupt" profile (I don't really believe in those).
- Start again from a clean profile where it works.
So what happens to those pages when you disable all extensions and reload the page(s)? Use Ctrl+F5 to reload without cache.
Or try to exclude the pages from the extension?
Make sure to also close all tabs and restart the browser after disabling extensions, although it shouldn't really be necessary - as extension code can linger in page code until a restart or tab close.
-
@Pathduck Hmm, I would really rather not lose my current profile as I have a lot of information packed into this one (I know I can import my bookmarks into a new one, but I'd have to do some research on what would happen to all my passwords, saved notes, settings, get all my stuff back, etc.), but I guess in the worst case I could just use the clean profile for all the pages that won't load on this one rather than use an extra browser, even if that's not a perfect solution.
When I disable all the extensions, the only change is that the pages look a little different because of the allow cookies pop up. Here's the meds page as an example:
[EDIT: I just saw the comment about restarting the browser and that seemed to change something, I'll try that out for a sec and report back, it might actually have helped!]
-
@Pathduck Okay so after trying out a couple more things with the extensions, I'm drawing the conclusion that it might have something to do with cookie pop ups and ads getting blocked at the same time.
That's a rather weird conclusion though, as I've only had the cookie pop up blocker for a few months (and there weren't any problems before, don't know if there was a secret update) and I've had this issue a few years back as well. Most of all what's weird is that when I disabled the extensions before (without the restart), both extensions really did get disabled, bc ads popped up (the only thing that WASN'T blank, yay) and the cookie pop up appeared. That's why I didn't really consider this to be the issue after that test, even though obviously when troubleshooting the issue these two extensions were the first thing I checked out. (On a side note, the restarting of the extensions didn't fully break the pages again this time (even with Ctrl+F5, like I said, sometimes things randomly work for a while, I don't understand it), so I tested it out with that page for the meds, as that "clue" about stuff interfering with the page was able to tell me which extension combinations caused issues.)
But now I'm just really confused as to why they won't work together - or I should rather say why the cookie extension won't allow for ads to be blocked bc the issues happen even when I switch the adblocker out for Vivaldi's own blocker...
I guess I'll be playing around with the settings a little more over the next few days to find a solution, but at least I can use all my pages now. It'll be rough to choose whether I'm less bothered by ads or the cookie pop ups though
I would of course appreciate more insights if you have any to give on how I can make the extension work with blocked ads (seems I already tried excluding one of the affected pages from the cookie extension, didn't work), but in the grand scheme of things I think we can consider this issue fixed now, as this is not a Vivaldi issue anymore and there's a somewhat working solution for the people that come looking for help in this matter. Thank you so so much for your help today! You're quite the life saver!
Tl;dr for the solution: Disable "allow cookies"-popup-extension, restart browser, maybe even delete cache; if you don't have that extension, try that process one by one with all your extensions in combination with your adblocker.

@buesra24 Good to hear
I use the "I don't care about cookies" myself, in combination with uBlock Origin and never have such problems on sites.
Looks to me you're using "AdBlock" which claims to be "best ad blocker" but my guess would be it's not - a lot of other users have had problems with that one and I basically consider it malware.
One thing of course you could test that you have not mentioned doing is simply disable the extension(s) on those pages. For IDCAC it's easy, just click the icon and choose to disable it there.
I would also try:
- Reset all the extension settings to the default options
- Disable all extensions
- Restart browser
- Enable one extension
- Test the page(s)
- Goto 3
For instance with adblockers you can add your own custom blocklists - and these "hardcore" lists often cause problems. And there can be problems with extensions interacting in bad ways.
Make sure the extension is the proper one installed from the Chrome Web Store and not some shady copy.
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/i-dont-care-about-cookies/fihnjjcciajhdojfnbdddfaoknhalnjaMake sure all extensions are updated by going to the Extensions page, then toggle Developer Mode to On, and clicking Update.
-
@Pathduck I was just looking around for forums that might be talking about these problems with IDCAC since the issue didn't just happen with my adblocker but also Vivaldi's and I was able to find one that had IDCAC directly integrated as an "extension" for the extension. It seems to be working great for now, but if I encounter any problems I will definitely try out your suggestion of uBlock Origin, as I've heard a lot about it today through all of my research on my issues. Learned quite a lot today, that's for sure
Also my last message was rather long so it probably got lost in a huge wall of text, but it seems I already tried adding the affected pages to IDCACs exceptions before (at least I found them in the whitelist for popups when I tried to add them this time) and apparently that didn't work. Don't know why, but at this point it doesn't matter anyways, I'm not using it anymore so I don't need to find out
Anyways, have a great evening!

@Pathduck It's been a while and I've been testing around to see what is causing this, and sadly I have yet again drawn the conclusion that it has nothing to do with extensions. Since the issue pops up or fixes itself randomly, it's very hard to actually test it. So now I'm guessing that that little pop-up about some script messing with the page wasn't actually connected to the issue and it was just luck - or honestly bad luck - that that coincided with the issue going away.
Over the last few weeks I have tested my browser with different ad blockers, no ad blockers, your recommended one, Vivaldi's own ad blocker, with and without IDCAC and even another version of it, and now even with all extensions completely disabled and Vivaldi's blocker for ads and tracking disabled (and restarted). Now the issue even keeps happening to Wikipedia and it feels like it's even worse than before as it barely ever randomly fixes itself anymore, and I'm getting quite frustrated...
Guest profiles will let me view the pages normally, but honestly I don't even trust that anymore bc what if that would also break after a while, just like my normal profile has broken after it seemed like it was fixed for a few days...
-
@buesra24 Hi again - you must be really unlucky I guess. If you've performed all the troubleshooting steps and tested in clean profiles, it may be some obscure bug with your specific system setup and components and Vivaldi.
I was suspecting you might have the following issue, since it seems very similar, strange blank pages shown on various sites:
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/81416/blank-page-shown-on-some-web-sitesBut that one seems to be a GPU-related issue, maybe GPU driver incompatibilities. It can be "solved" by disabling Hardware Acceleration so it's worth a shot I guess.
Settings > Webpages > uncheck Use Hardware Acceleration, restart the browser.I still suspect extensions though. It's always extensions, believe me
-
@Pathduck Oh wow, that other thread is an amazing find, I wonder why it never popped up when I searched for similar threads before posting this one. It's good to know I'm not alone in this and not the only one frustrated that the issue doesn't get fixed. Some people in the thread talked about how restarting the browser fixes the issue - that might explain why I kept thinking we were able to fix it I guess... But that also makes testing quite impossible.
For now, I've uninstalled every single extension that I have in case deactivating every single one wasn't enough. I've reinstalled AdBlock Plus with its integrated IDCAC extension bc the last weeks were hell on earth for my scattered ADHD brain just to test it out (disabling everything didn't seem to help anyways). And now I have disabled Hardware Acceleration as you have suggested and will be checking out all the affected pages over the next few days as I don't really have any better way of testing if it worked. I'll get back to you if that did anything, but as of now with a browser restart it's - of course - looking good. If only technology didn't hate me this much
Most importantly I will keep up with the other thread as they seem to be working on this issue quite actively. I can't thank you enough for finding it for me! (And being so helpful altogether of course!). I haven't figured out how to change which answer is the "solution" in this thread yet, but if I do, I'll switch it out.

@buesra24 Hi
The other topic seems to be something about GPU driver errors on certain sites under certain circumstances and triggered by apparently random factors (coming from a Google search, makes no sense at all). I just thought it seemed very similar to what you were seeing.
So logically, the same should happen for those users when testing in a clean or guest profile. But I don't know how thorough those users testing methods are. For you though, it seems to work in a guest profile, so I think we can exclude GPU issues, but maybe not.
It's a general problem - a user will encounter an issue in their default browser (Vivaldi) - then immediately open a browser they rarely use (Chrome/Edge), and it looks like it works there. My guess is they would encounter the same issue in the other browsers if they recreated the exact circumstances the issue triggers on.

@buesra24
I think I have encountered same problem as yours for this two week, and in my case, this problem is solved by disabling gpu hardware acceleeration. -

@Pathduck Disabling Hardware Acceleration seems to have been the correct solution to this problem - whyever it doesn't recreate the problem in a clean profile, with a restart, or in incognito mode. I've tested it out with many pages and over the course of many days with "natural" PC restarting rather than browser restarting since that seems to usually "restart" the issues as well, and I haven't had the problem again since. I've also enabled my extensions again and they don't seem to be causing any issues, I'm so glad about that.
I'll keep an eye on the other forum and have even posted there as well in case anyone wants more information or a solution can be found, but for now I am all set. I hope this solution will be the final and permanent one (I've been fooled a little too often by short term fixes), but I am quite optimistic, there hasn't been a single hiccup since I disabled hardware acceleration.
Thank you for your patience and help!
PS: Editing the original post for this question (to include the final solution at the bottom) removed your other answer being tagged as the solution (from when I thought it fixed the problem permanently). But I don't seem to be able to actually choose a new one as the solution, I guess my edit in the first message will have to suffice.

Just a thought, although I have found it relevant to Vivaldi page load problems I have had. Do you use a VPN? I have found I have to split tunnel several web sites for them to consistently load. I use Brave which I have set up as an app that bypasses the VPN to test when this seems to be an issue.
-
Had the same issue too. Disabling Hardware Acceleration fixed it for me. I'm using a GTX 1070, and the latest drivers, 528.24.
I'm wondering what everyone else is using that's experiencing these issues?
-
I had the same issue. For example Wikipedia and Fandom pages would not load and just show a white window with some random elements.
I just disabled Hardware Acceleration in the settings and now it seems to work. My system has Win 10 and a 2080Ti.
