google calendar not syncing old events, but tasks are okay
-
hi,
i (re)installed (install, delete, install again, etc) google calendar several times in vivaldi, and checked all the calendar settings several times, but google calendar won't sync.
Strange enough, I do see my tasks, and holiday calendars (.ics), but no regular calendar events.
The calendar logs are empty.
Any idea what is wrong? and how to fix?
Thank you!! -
@peefy
Hi, I use Google calendar since a while to get easier access on my Android devices.
Tasks are not working correctly, one user report but I don´t use tasks.
I have a second calendar from vivaldi.net enabled and all are in sync.
If I add a event on the Google calendar app on Android it sync on my desktop devices.
As usual you can only testing this in clean profile to exclude settings, extensions an broken profiles.https://help.vivaldi.com/desktop/tools/user-profiles/
Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin thank you!
but the google calendar still does not sync.
it does not sync in a new profile,
and it does not sync with a browser resetregular google email does work okay, but calendar not.
any ideas?

@mib2berlin I get the same:
connected to caldav. found 3 calendars
it says found 3 calendars, but under calendars I see 4 calendars:
- my main calendar
- official holidays public calendar A
- official holidays public calendar B
- my task list
calendars 2, 3, 4 do show up fine.
calendar 1 does not show anything.so why it does not find the main calendar?
thanks!

@peefy
No idea, I poke in the fog.
There are some settings to check even it seams a dump question.I am not sure why the calendar items are hidden but it work for me.
You can only test this in a clean profile to exclude settings, extensions or a broken profile.
Create one, close all tabs and enable email/calendar in vivaldi://settings/general/https://help.vivaldi.com/desktop/tools/user-profiles/
If you don´t need it anymore you can delete it or use ot for further test situations.
Cheers, mib
-
@mib2berlin hi thanks for the info, but i already tested it all in new profiles, and even in a fresh vivaldi standalone installation.
I exported the main calendar to see what it contains, but the .ics export file seems empty!
BEGIN:VCALENDAR PRODID:-Vivaldi Calendar V1.0//EN VERSION:2.0 CALSCALE:GREGORIAN DTSTAMP:20221218T025146Z END:VCALENDAR
I tested the google calendar (with Oauth) in microsoft windows calendar, and in microsoft windows calendar it works perfectly.
In vivaldi I see no normal events, only task events, even if i disabled sync for tasks in preferences panel.

@peefy
Hm, I am a bit out of ideas now, only a third party security software can block this for Vivaldi but not for the main stream applications.
For example I cant add mail accounts in Vivaldi but in Windows mail with a running Avast. No errors, no messages, it simply cant connect.
Do you use one by any chance?Cheers, mib

I think we have to look here:
why caldav only finds 3 calendars instead of 4?I checked https://www.google.com/calendar/syncselect but all calendars where checked there as well.
-
@peefy
No idea, I hope one of the mail/calendar developer steps by on Monday.
Do you use one or not?Cheers, mib
-
@mib2berlin no, I only have the native windows defender active
-
@mib2berlin Further testing reveals that when I add a NEW event in vivaldi or android, it gets synced,
BUT the older events are not synced (nor imported when i add the account, the account is empty after adding the calendar to vivaldi) -
@mib2berlin As a workaround I wanted to import the export file from google calendar.
gcal exported an .ics file of 376kb
I tried to import it via the file menu in vivaldi, the dialog showed "0/693", I pressed ok, and went to see the calendar, but i got in the calendar status bar:imported 0 of 0 (NaN%)
This is an important clue I think, if even the manual import didn't work.
One would think that the export process is faulty, but the syncing in windows calendar goes just fine, with no issues at al.

@peefy
Hi, I import my Google .ics, it is 179KB and import is working fine, Vivaldi 5.6.2867.46.
The calendar was empty as I import.
You can open the .ics in a text editor, the first lines of my one:BEGIN:VCALENDAR PRODID:-//Google Inc//Google Calendar 70.9054//EN VERSION:2.0 CALSCALE:GREGORIAN METHOD:PUBLISH X-WR-CALNAME:[email protected] X-WR-TIMEZONE:Europe/Berlin BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART:20150406T080000Z DTEND:20150406T090000Z DTSTAMP:20221218T065139Z UID:[email protected] CREATED:20150329T061445Z DESCRIPTION: LAST-MODIFIED:20150329T061445Z LOCATION: SEQUENCE:0 STATUS:CONFIRMED SUMMARY:Alexandra TRANSP:OPAQUE END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART:20150604T060000Z DTEND:20150604T080000Z DTSTAMP:20221218T065139Z UID:[email protected] CREATED:20150519T050430Z DESCRIPTION: LAST-MODIFIED:20150519T050430Z LOCATION: SEQUENCE:0 STATUS:CONFIRMED SUMMARY:Schornsteinfeger
Can you check yours?

@mib2berlin
Did you get 4 files if you expand the .zip file? -
@mib2berlin Hi,
I got only 1 .ics file when expanding the gcal .zip export file.

@mib2berlin THANK YOU for all your help!
I have only 1 file, and no contacts, strange ...
The google tasks is a seperate calendar file, but it too, is not exported. -
Hi @mib2berlin , @gmg :
I tested the .ics in https://icalendar.org/validator and it says:
Success! No errors found.
There were some warnings though:
Line length should not be longer than 75 characters near line # 46 Reference: RFC 5545 3.1. Content Lines Line length should not be longer than 75 characters near line # 47 Reference: RFC 5545 3.1. Content Lines Line length should not be longer than 75 characters near line # 48 Reference: RFC 5545 3.1. Content Lines
Any clues anyone, why .ics import does not work?

Hello @peefy
From your description here my guess would be that there is something in the iCalendar content for your main calendar that our parser chokes on. It is normal (From the point of view of how it is implemented now, but not how we'd like to see this from a usability POV.) that the number of calendars for google account excludes the task list(s), so I think 3 found is expected for your account.
If you try to import the .ics file do you get any error in logs, either those found in the calendar button on the status bar (lower left corner of browser window by default) or in developer console. If you do not know how to access those I can guide you.
We really need to improve our error reporting to aid with debugging problems like this.
