Solved How to turn off the translation popup / button?
-
Hello, I've been using Vivaldi for several months...
Recently a Mysterious Button appears and I am trying to determine if it is a "bug", "hack", or "a function that is part of the Vivaldi brower".
This question may have been answered before, but I am new here. I have a mysterious button that appears when highlighting certain fields on certain pages... (more relevant on links).
I first noticed this the other day when highlighting a field by moving the cursor from right to left. Suddenly this button appears with an "A" and a symbol above the "A" that looks like an "X" with a "hat" on top of it. See attached images.
I tried bring up the page on other browsers, but the button only appears on Vivaldi Broweser. I am on Windows 8.1.
Please let me know if this is a function of the browser, or if it is some type of malware or a hack. I clicked on it once and it disappears, and seemingly does nothing.
Hope someone can help me out and put my mind at ease, or else I may have to stop using the Vivaldi Browser, and I really like using it... but I am afraid of any security issues the mystery button may present.
It does look similar to the symbols next to the "Local Forums" link on your Forum's page (see images below):
Thank so much for a quick response - Stephen

@sbasly Hello and Welcome to the Vivaldi Community
If you'd tried clicking it, you might have understood what it's for
It's just the selected text translate button. You will see the same icon for the translate panel for instance.
https://help.vivaldi.com/desktop/tools/translate-web-pages/To turn it off, go to Settings > Webpages > "Show selected text translate button" and uncheck it.

@pathduck said in Mysterious "Button" Appears when Highlighting a field...Is this a "hack"?:
To turn it off, go to Settings > Webpages > "Show selected text translate button" and uncheck it.
I have to restart the browser for the changed option to take effect, both when checked and unchecked don't apply immediately.

I'm referring to the pop up box that appears whenever you select some text.

โก Show Selected Text Traslate Button -
Hi, I think the setting is settings/webpages/show "selected text translate" popup - or the like.
My UI is german, but its the fifth checkbox from top.
You may need to refresh the page for the new setting to work and not show that distracting icon.
Hope that helps to solve your issue. -
