Browser keeps closing / crashing on its own (mostly when copy/paste)
-
For me it most often (but not always) seems to happen when closing a tab. Happened several times today.
-
Random crashing still happening to me after all the recent updates. It seems to happen a bit more often now.
For me it looks to be completely random - I read a page and 'puff' - Vivaldi is gone. The only good thing is that reopening Vivaldi brings back all the tabs I had.
-
Just noticed this follow-up thread mentions copy/pasting. I believe it's misleading as it happens completely randomly. It never happened to me when copy/pasting anything.
It might be some underlaying process that runs to update stuff - I remember the shutdowns happened very often until I disabled internal email tool.

Any extensions enabled?
-
@Chas4 This issue is months old, we would know already if it's an extension issue. So no extensions enabled nor installed.
-
@jjaarreekk Sometimes they can cause crashes is why I asked.
5.4.2753.51 I just copied that from Vivaldi about page and pasted it (the current version number for Vivaldi stable as of this comment).
Also there has been macOS updates since their last post.
The other question would be what type of content are they trying to copy (is it images or text with different unicode characters)
-
@Chas4 This thread is a continuation of other very long thread related to it - that's why I was off-putting for you - please read the whole thing before giving quite obvious advice.
I have the most recent macOS 12.6 (21G115) and most recent Vivaldi - 5.4.2753.51
This bug was never fixed because it is very hard to give reproduction steps as it seems to happen randomly. I'm a programmer and I try to approach to this issue from a debugging point of view but nothing comes as a clue when it happens.
It also doesn't seem to be worked on - Vivaldi team has suggested they fixed that few version ago, but nothing has changed in my case.
-
After the latest update (v5.4.2753.51), the problem seems fixed for me. Vivaldi didn't crash for 4 days.
-
Same for me, I didn't get any crashes for over two weeks now.
I think we can mark this issue as solved! Thanks!
-
It's just crashed for me today for the 2nd time - ver. 5.4.2753.51
-
v5.4.2753.51, still crashing. Not so often but still crashing.
-
It has just crashed 5th time today for me. Completely randomly. Sometimes I'm even away from the computer it just closes itself.
It seems to happen more often than in previous releases.
Is anybody looking into it?

Vivaldi 5.5 is out now https://vivaldi.com/blog/vivaldi-5-5-on-desktop/
-
Vivaldi just closed itself: 5.5.2805.32 (Stable channel) (arm64)
btw - copy icon next to the version number on vivaldi://about/ tab does not work
-
@jjaarreekk FYI, there is an open bug for the broken "copy version information": VB-91725
As for the random crashes, I have not seen any of these in ages. If any of you have reliable steps-to-reproduce, please file a bug and I will do whatever I can to duplicate the crash and confirm it. (I have also asked the Vivaldi team to update their instructions on how to report crashes on macOS.)
-
@jjaarreekk One other thing: are you actually seeing a crash or is the Vivaldi window just closing?
If the window closes, you will still see a dot under the Vivaldi icon in the Dock, which indicates that Vivaldi is still running and has not crashed.
If Vivaldi crashes, you will see a new mini-dump created in
~/Library/Application Support/Vivaldi/Crashpad/pending
-
@xyzzy Thank you for the Crashpad tip. I see plenty of dumps there, their timestamps seem to overlap the time of crashes. I don't have reproduction steps - it just crashes randomly.
-
Just had another crash when watching full-screen video, but it's nowhere a repro step. Does the crash dump file alone help in any way?
-
@jjaarreekk It just might, especially if the crash occurred with version 5.5. (Previous crash reports for this issue were analyzed but due to the nature of the crash, the root cause was unclear. It's possible that a fix for another crash, that got fixed in 5.5, may make the cause of this crash easier to diagnose.)

Very unstable. Can have a window in the background with 20+ tabs, plus multiple other windows with multiple tabs open for days and everything is fine. Then, for no reason, gone.
Today had Dashlane open in one window and Yahoo in another with just a couple of tabs and it closed. Down to two windows because it crashed last night.
Seems to happen when closing one tab.
