Search/Address bar problem - history not deleting/clearing

For the past couple of months the history in the search/address bar will not delete. I do not like to keep my browsing history etc...and have my browser set to clear session browsing data on exit. That works fine, however regardless of my browser settings the history in the search/address bar will not clear. This does not really help with privacy at all. Even when I select specific websites to be removed from the search history, the history remains. Anyone else experiencing something similar?
