Solved Issues with changing the default search engine after update
-
There's an update from the Vivaldi staff: it's an internal issue on the browser itself, apparently, and can be caused by any extension, not just DDG.

Additionally, disabling and re-enabling the extension should solve the issue. I tried it myself and I can confirm it works.

@DZAladan Proper busted on my end. I am unable to even toggle extensions. Bing is stuck as the default search engine, nor am I able to delete Google from the list of search engines.
The conspiracy theorist in me says this might have something to do with DDG and their 'contractual obligations' with Microsoft, which have been in the news this past week....

After the recent update version 5.3.2679.38, Vivaldi is not allowing to change the search engine. It is forcing to use Yahoo. If this continues I will have to abandon using this browser.

Hi, some user report this and abandon the DDG extension.
If you use it simply disable it change search engine and enable it again.
Search forum for "yahoo search" to get more info or read:https://vivaldi.com/blog/desktop/minor-update-three-5-3/

Can confirm that toggling the DDG extension off and then back on from the Manage Extensions page fixed the issue for me.
That said, another issue I'm having is that the auto-suggest when searching from the address bar is now defaulting to items from my Typed History, rather than to the default search engine. This is happening despite the fact that I don't have (and never have had) any entries in the Allow Search Suggestions setting enabled.

@mib2berlin Your solution worked. Thank you for the quick response.

Hi all, I have a problem with Vivaldi, namely the browser has changed the search engine to Yahoo without asking permission and blocks any attempts to change to the previous one.
Does anyone know when the fix will come out? Because I don't think Vivaldi team will leave users for weekend with this bug? -

Hi, some user report the DDG extension cause this, disable it change search engine, enable it.

Just installed v. 5.3.2679.38 on OSX 12.4. I cannot change the default search engine in the Search settings. It's set to Bing and won't accept anything else in the dropdown list of other search engines. And choosing anything other than Bing in the Search Engines list and then checking the Set as Default Search checkbox has no effect, either.

I just updated to 5.3.2679.38 and can no longer change my default search engine to anything but Bing. All of the other search engines appear in the drop down, but selecting anything other than Bing has no effect.

Known issue
If you have recently upgraded to 5.3 and have a problem where you cannot change search engines (VB-89670), we are still planning a fix for this in a future update. To work around it in the mean time, just disable and immediately re-enable any extensions you have installed that can configure/setup search (.e.g. “DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials”, “Startpage — Private Search Engine”, “Kagi Search”, etc.). Now restart the browser. You should then be able to control the default search engine again in Settings.

That works for me. I had Qwant set as my default before updating, and it still is my default, but I can change it.

DDG can not be set as the default search engine. I even went to the search engines section and tried setting it as the default search engine to no avail (it is marked as Private) . I also tried removing it as the Private Window search engine but that didn't help either.
In fact no other search engine other than Bing can be set.
Vivaldi version is 5.3.2679.38 (Stable channel) (32-bit)

@CheechGe If you use any extensions which manipulates the search engines you have to disable, re-enable t hose extensions and restart Vivaldi.
