@pjbonner Curious. My Stable version Vivaldi is a default installation for all users. I use the Snapshot as my default browser.

I wonder if this apparent bug depends on a user's locale?

I see the problem. But I ask again: Have you tried "Restore defaults" button?

If all else fails, open URL:
            chrome://settings/searchEngines
See if you can set defaults/remove there. Might be under "site search" heading.

Issue on my system is related to DuckDuckGo extension as well.

Disabling it allows for default search engine to be changed.

Disabling DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials extension allowed for changes to be made once again.

THANK you. Geez, this was driving me crazy. Installed new version today, was immediately switched to Bing, and unable to change it.

I cannot delete bing image search. It's definitely a bug. This search engine was at the top of my list, previously I have deleted others and this was last of those I don't use.

Might be an extension (DDG?) or for instance you've removed Google completely or removed the image parameters from it.

The problem is that if you remove Google, then Bing is the only Image search engine and so cannot be deleted.

A screenshot of your search settings page might work explain the problem too.

This is so weird it's probably totally true. This is most likely how Vivaldi works.

@Beholder4096 , same issue. I think the problem is that Vivaldi only proposes Bing and Google as search engines for images, without the possibility of adding another image search engine.
Deleting Google, only Bing remains as the default search engine for images and without being able to add another, it is naturally impossible to delete it.

Private Window Search Engine and Image Search Engine work as intended,

@Pesala I confirm that this is the case: as soon as I disabled the extension, the default engine immediately changed back to my default.

                                      Very weird.

After updating, Yahoo was set to default and it was impossible to change or remove it completely. Could only change the name and url.

Worried there for a bit that Vivaldi got paid off good.

But disabling the DuckDuckGo extension and restarting did the trick.

                                      Bye bye Yahoo!

This is a known issue. If you have recently upgraded to 5.3 and have a problem where you cannot change search engines (VB-89670), we are still planning a fix for this in a future update.

To work around it in the meantime, just disable and immediately re-enable any extensions you have installed that can configure/set up a search (e.g. “DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials”, “Startpage — Private Search Engine”, “Kagi Search”, etc.). Now restart the browser. You should then be able to control the default search engine again in Settings.

More info: It is not really the DDG extension's fault to be clear. It is a poor interaction from the extension and some search migration code that gets run on the upgrade from 5.2 to 5.3. The bug is on our side. If you disable the extension and immediately re-enable it the issue goes away.

//MODEDIT: added the entire workaround procedure
