News: DuckDuckGo (the company) isn’t as Private as You Thought
-
"DuckDuckGo made a deal with the devil. Due to a confidential search agreement, the DuckDuckGo browser does not block all Microsoft trackers. What’s worse, DuckDuckGo only acknowledged this “privacy hole” after it was discovered by a security researcher."

Wonderful, isn't it? After the last Bing incident, then the censoring fiasco, then this.

No more Search engines left
-
As soon as they started advertising I knew they weren't to be trusted.
-
Vivaldi Search engine, I am ready
-
@npro Yep, i read about this, this morn, & was horrified yet cynically not shocked. Essentially, everyone's either a proven bastard, a covert bastard, or a latent one. Bloody humans.
I wonder how long it'll be before i discover that even searX is stuffed.
Oh, btw, some posts in this thread seem like some peeps have misunderstood this revelation. Whether we can trust the clarification is ofc another matter, but fwiw:
Weinberg has made it clear that this restriction is only in their browser and does not affect the DuckDuckGo search engine.
IMO, even if that statement is technically correct, it probably won't matter. I suspect most peeps who give even half a damn about trying to protect their privacy, will not bother with the nuance, & instead simply conclude "DDG = tracking", then move away to something else.

@Stardust Ecosia?
-
@guigirl Yes, the title refers to DuckDuckGo as the company and in the quoted text there's browser, but as you say, who guarantees that some other stinky shenanigan won't be "discovered" again in the future for the search engine and whatnot, for a company that advocates privacy, but has 3 times stunk up its nest already. Called breach of trust on good faith and no matter how much damage control you 're trying to apply it's too late.
-
@npro Please, edit title! and change to DuckDuckGo Browser
-
@DoctorG No need for that, imo Security & Privacy section covers all OS and software and the Duckduckgo browser is a product of Duckduckgo, not Google's. While you would expect from Google et.al to not be private/spy you/track you, you wouldn't expect it from DuckDuckgo.
/edit: added (the company) for those lazy to read 2 lines...

Tbh, i've never really trusted ducks. Shifty spam-loving little varmints!
-
@guigirl Actually if there were a DaffyDuck browser I would be definitely using that
, but they come up with stoopid names like duckduckgo
-
-
@guigirl Well, after a statement like that, you should be very careful with your future posts, otherwise a certain northern duck could take lessons on censorship from a certain large Asian state.
Btw,

@hlehyaric Heehee. Your words are wise, & your caution valid, but atm i feel moderately safe, coz for a little while at least...
-
Yes, but he seems to take a look at the forum even on holiday or that reply of him is from a duckbot.

@Stardust Ecosia?
I sometimes use that for image searches, though far from perfect, they are in bed with M$, they collect data as well
https://www.techradar.com/reviews/ecosia-search-engineDDG was just another cockroach in the shithole.
startpage is my primary, they have ads, but it's strictly based on search words that are typed

https://www.techradar.com/reviews/startpageBut Startpage was sold to an advertising company. No way am I going to trust a search engine owned by an advertising company.

@npro
Use Brave search. :))

@nellaiseemai Nah, til proven otherwise, use searX search... with [at your discretion] bruve, gargle, mojeek, bung, quack, stoppage et al enabled. That way... cake, eat.
