It is really appalling to me that this has been going on for almost 10 months with absolutely no news whatsoever, with a temporary workaround for sole "fix".

I don't know whose fault this is (Vivaldi's ? Chromium's ? Intel's ? Mesa's ?) but whatever the case may be I would gladly have an update to know whether the proper people are aware and whether this problem is going to be addressed at all.

With all the laptops out there which have intel graphics I wonder how many users gave up on Vivaldi just because of this issue.

I know this is a Linux issue limited to the most "bleeding edge distro". The raw number is probably not that high. But keep in mind that this affects exactly the type of tech-savy users that are the most likely to promote or discourage other people from using Vivaldi.

Same problem here with 5.6 on NixOS. On 5.4 no problem but if I install 5.6 the problem arrives.

Hi, then it is maybe a Chromium 108 and Vivaldi issue.
Please check if it is really a GPU/driver Vivaldi issue with disabling hardware acceleration in settings > webpages.
@nclaudel there are no news because this issue happen on some systems for some user with some distributions.
If it is on Intel UHD GPU on Mint only there were a solution but it is not.

          Cheers, mib

@DoctorG Thank you! Just so it's out there in one thread for anyone looking for a solution:
Open vivaldi://flags/#enable-gpu-rasterization and set it to disabled

@bartoszbudzynski But that is just a hack, not a fix. I shouldn't have to disabled GPU support in order to get tab text to display correctly. This isn't a problem with any other browser.

Hi, you don´t have to disable HW acceleration if this flag work.
This is an issue caused by your GPU/Driver and Vivaldi, I don´t have to change anything on Opensuse with Intel UHD 620 Laptop and Ryzen 7 integrated GPU workstation.

                Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin Though it doesn't disable hardware acceleration for everything in the browser, this flag disables hardware acceleration for rasterization, which does impact browser performance. If other browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Edge don't have this issue with the same GPU/Driver, why is Vivaldi having this issue?

Firefox is completely different and the big 3 use own video codecs and hardware support.
Iirc you can only play Netflix UHD in Edge but not in any other browser on Windows, for example.
This is the disadvantage using a browser from a small team.
I don´t even notice if HW acceleration is completely en/disabled on my systems.
If you want to watch 8K 60 Fps videos use Edge, for other things use Vivaldi.

                    Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin I reported this as a bug a while back and was hoping for some kind of response from the Vivaldi team, even if the answer is "won't fix". I understand your point of it being an imperfect world, but that doesn't mean we should consider shutting off hardware features as the accepted fix; it is a workaround for certain folks. If the Vivaldi team is the incorrect team to report the issue to, perhaps they could give some insight into who might be able to correct it long-term.

@mib2berlin Okay, so the answer is essentially "Won't Fix", ugh. Thank you for looking that up, I do appreciate it.

I guess I will just use another browser on this system until this issue is somehow resolved. Wish I had some idea where to report this if Vivaldi is confident that this isn't on their end.

Oh, and I never did receive any updates from the ticket, only the original email giving me the ticket number. I assume there is no way for folks to see their tickets if they aren't on the Vivaldi team?

Been using Vivaldi for many years and a lot of my family has switched to it as their primary browser. This is the first really annoying bug that I have personally dealt with, generally a solid product.

No, you cant watch the bug tracker it is not public.
As far as I know this is an issue with Intel Xe GPU on Linux, I don´t have any issues with Intel, AMD and former Nvidia GPU´s on Opensuse so I cant test or verify any report in the tracker.

Next release change to Chromium 110, may you check in again to Vivaldi at this time.

I just installed Vivaldi on my new Linux Mint 21.1 OS. I finally have everything just they way I want it. And everything looks good! BUT I just realized that the text is garbled in my tabs. I have never seen anything like this before! It's crazy!

I read through all of the comments on this page. And I'm surprised to see that this has been going on for quite awhile! Why?!! This should have been fixed a long time ago!!

I gave up on Vivaldi about a year ago, because of some issues that weren't being addressed at the time. But I thought I would try it again. This issue is not making me feel very good about Vivaldi!!

Hi, distro update should not change Vivaldi settings but maybe different GPU driver.
                                            Open chrome://flags/#enable-gpu-rasterization
I cant remember if you need to set it to enabled or disabled but you can check quickly.

                                            Had you tried mib2berlin's advice?

With some GPUs and drivers Vivaldi can have issues.
