Solved How to remove the black Download arrow from the Address Bar
-
Thanks, @mib2berlin. I discovered the setting, rushed to add a note to my post, and found your advice there already.
Could I remark that Settings --> Downloads --> Display Downloads in a Popup is rather obscure language for the item. I did look very carefully in Downloads before I posted, and I completely missed it. Surely it should be 'Display Downloads on the Address Bar'. And the note in the Help page is misleading.
Details, details --- I really do like the Vivaldi browser very much indeed.

@montiverdi said in How to remove the black Download arrow from the Address Bar:
This worked for all the other icons, but not for the Download icon
It's going to be fixed soon. Sorry for the inconvenience. We are currently working on making the toolbar customization more flexible.

Remove this:
With this code:
.button-toolbar button[title="Show typed history"], {display: none !important;}

@barbudo2005, thank you very much, except now you have now you have exposed my ignorance. I am not a techie.
- How to I add code to Vivaldi?
- Is there are convenient Help file explaining this somewhere on the Vivaldi website or elsewhere?
- I can use JScript, without any great proficiency, but I don't even know what language this code is in.
Also, the button will need to be replaced by a shortcut that displays the extension icons, but I may be able to work out code for this myself if I know the basics.

@montiverdi
Hi, follow @Christoph142 advice:Vivaldi 2.6 and above Open vivaldi://experiments Enable "Allow for using CSS modifications" Open Appearance section in settings Choose the folder you want to use Place your CSS files inside it Restart Vivaldi to see them in effect
You have to create a text file "hide_button.css" and save it in the folder you choose. This file include the code of @barbudo2005.
The file name is only an example, you can name it like you want.

Thanks, @mib2berlin, for all that detail, and for the URL. It all looks straightforward. I'll give it my best shot tomorrow and report back.

@montiverdi I believe you were talking about this one, the extensions toggle button:
There is no direct keyboard hotkey to access it. You can hide it through CSS mods, but that will also mean the element will not be accessible at all.
You can make it subtler with CSS:
/* Toggle extension button */ .toolbar-extensions svg path { opacity: .5; }
To access it with the keyboard, I set "Focus All Controls" in Settings > Keyboard. I can then access it from the address bar using Tab:
I also use a small CSS mod to make the item focus more visible when accessed:
/* Toolbar buttons keyboard focus */ .UrlBar .toolbar-extensions .button-toolbar:focus-within, .UrlBar .toolbar-mainbar .button-toolbar:focus-within { background-color: var(--colorAccentBgDark); }
However, making the actual extension dialogs keyboard accessible is another matter, most of them don't seem to care much about accessibility.
If you want extensions in a drop-down to save address bar space, check:
Settings > Address Bar > "Expand hidden extensions to drop-down" -
@mib2berlin Okay, and how do I ENable it if "Display Downloads in a Popup" isn't even there as an option? I've been looking for what feels like an hour and found no way of enabling the icon after a fresh Vivaldi install.

@gkyl A few settings were made redundant by the new ability to edit toolbars. The Download pop-up is one of them.
Right-click on the toolbar to edit it and drag the downloads icon onto the toolbar, wherever you want it to be.

Got it. Thanks for the heads-up!
