New tab/navigation/reload buttons stop working randomly
-
Not quite sure how to replicate it, as it seems to be quite random, but the new tab button does not always work reliably. Sometimes it'll work for a few hours, but then it just stops working at random. It tends to not work consistently no matter how many windows I have open of vivaldi, but I don't know if that is always the case. It also doesn't seem tab dependent either, as in how many tabs I have open. The solution is easy enough, as left clicking the button gives you an option to create a new tab in the given menu, but it is kind of annoying that pressing the button doesn't do anything. The animation of a click does work, but a new tab isn't always created. Weird. I hope this is enough information to help with an investigation. I'd like to see if it's a bug that is more widespread before uninstalling and reinstalling vivaldi, as that's much more of a hassle. No matter how many times I click it, if it's not working, it never works... Until it does... But usually it's spontaneous whenever it decides to work, or not to, lol.

@bj1101 Welp, ironically I've found another bug that kind of goes hand in hand with this new tab bug, and it acts in the same kind of way. The forward, back buttons to move forward and back through page history is broken as well, as it works sometimes, and sometimes doesn't. Again, the same exact pattern. Oddly enough, when I use the forward and back buttons on my mouse it does go back and forth through the page, however clicking the actual buttons doesn't do anything, though the animation shows. Hmm...

@bj1101 Have you tested with Guest Profile ?

Hello,
after installing the first 5.0 update, my nav and reload buttons stop working after a certain time. The problem exists in the latest update as well.
It only happens on some websites, like Youtube or Reveddit. It's pretty reproducable and doesn't go away by using an empty profile.
The back/next buttons become grayed out as if the tab has never been used before and there aren't older entries, while the reload button stays white and just looses its function.
I created a video that demonstrates the problem https://streamable.com/a5r3j1
You can see how I'm watching something on Youtube.
- Back/Next buttons are grayed out
- Reload button is w/o function
- Click on URL
- Hit enter
- Page reloads
- Back button becomes white
- Reload button has function
- A few seconds later the cycle repeats
- Back/Next grayed out
- Reload looses function
- ...
I hope this is a bug not a new feature that allows to disable navigation because the website has better ideas on how I want to navigate the web.
EDIT:
Even happens here on the forums.

@tbgbe I wasn't able to recreate the issue through the guest profile, but it's so spontaneous and unpredictable that I cannot guarantee it is impossible to recreate in the guest profile.

I've encountered the same problem.
The way I discovered it was when I would browse with two windows side by side. Once I would leave one window and navigate in the other window, the back button would be disabled in the first windows. When I would switch back to that window, I could revive the back button by clicking in the URL bar and hitting enter.
From what I can tell, it happens regardless of the sites you are using in either window.

I read in mail from a friend he had the same on Linux and got button working back only after reload of first window.
Which Vivaldi version do you use?

Same issues for me after updating to 5.0.2497.35.
I find it odd that there are not more reports of this problem and wonder if my previous install had issues and is not playing nice with the 5.0 update. I would have thought the update would only maintain personal stuff like history, bookmarks, sessions, etc. and freshen/cleanup everything else.
I'm on a PC so I usually recover by right clicking and selecting 'Back' or 'Reload'.
-
I also have the issue with disabled back button and non-working reload button.
As @BigFinlayMcC I also use two Vivaldi windows (on two screens), so it may indeed be related to this. -
This issue (
[Tabs] Buttons can become unusable with multiple windows (VB-85667)
) has been fixed recently. The fix was introduced in Snapshot 2549.3 and should be available in the Stable update to 5.1. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for sticking with us! -
I've had this bug today with a single window and a single tab. The back button was grayed out on a page where google search was opened
Yesterday, when working on my local project, the reload button stopped working. Had to open a new tab and close the old one. It was still clickable, but not working. This happened a few times.
both latest Vivaldi (5.0.2497.38 (Stable channel) (64-bit) on Win11, all updates installed.
Does the fix you mention include the single window, single tab scenario? Or do I have to file a new report for that?
-
@wwevo I can't say, as I haven't even experienced it myself. You can always download the Snapshot, install it separately (as standalone, for example), and play around with it to see how it works on your rig. Just keep in mind, that Snapshot is more of a "test" version, so you may experience other issues (more on that here).

I'm requesting confirmation by anyone of a possible bug where the back (<) button in a normal window loses its stored data when a second, private Vivaldi window is closed. I've tried it with and without extensions, and it occurs consistently after I open and then close a private window while leaving the main normal window open. Version 5.0.2497.48 (Stable channel) (64-bit), Windows 10.
- Open a 'normal' Vivaldi window and navigate to several URLs; leave this window open, and observe the back button is illuminated and functions.
- Then open a 'private' window and navigate to a URL.
- Close the private window.
- Observe the normal window's back button is no longer illuminated and no longer can retrieve prior pages (although they remain listed in Vivaldi's 'history').
I'm not sure whether this is new behavior since a recent Vivaldi update - I seem not to recall seeing it in prior months, but that may just be the way I've been using more private windows recently to bypass my normal-window extensions on several extension-problematic web pages.
I've filed a bug report, but haven't yet received a VB number.

@blackbird I think I can confirm. Strange bug. It's not just on close, just opening a new Private Window, and navigating to any site on SD will "clear" back button history in the regular window. But using for instance mouse back button or standard Alt+LeftArrow works. And after that history comes back and seems fine.
BUT- and you'll be glad to know - it seems fixed in Snapshot. Please download and install as Standalone to check if it's gone. It would help this bug not ending up in the next Stable.
https://vivaldi.com/blog/desktop/getting-closer-vivaldi-browser-snapshot-2567-3/There's certainly been a lot of mixups of private/regular windows stuff in the latest builds. I don't really notice because I don't use private windows that much.

@pafflick The issue is back in the current version. It's much harder to reproduce but it happens from time to time that the back/forward buttons fail to do their job.
So far opening an old Tab (ctrl+shift+t) and closing it again can bring the buttons back, but not always.
The reload button is not affected as much as the back/fwd buttons.
This happens on 5.0.2497.48 (Stable channel) (64-Bit) on Windows 11 Version 21H2 (Build 22000.469)
-
@grimeton Yes, as I said in my post:
The fix was introduced in Snapshot 2549.3 and should be available in the Stable update to 5.1.
-
@pafflick Hm that's interesting. Switching from W10 to W11 and having an empty profile made the buttons work again.
It seems the more full the history in the browser becomes, the more likely the buttons are to fail.
-
@grimeton The bug does not always show up - but as long as you're using Stable 5.0, it might still occur, as the patch is expected to be released in 5.1, as I mentioned above.
-
The issue should be fixed in Vivaldi 5.1, which just got released.
-
@pafflick The issue I was having with the opening of a private window erasing the back-button 'memory' in the regular window has been resolved with the 5.1 version. Many thanks to the Vivaldi team!
