BUG: New Tabs Broken (Dead Bird)
-
@mib2berlin Could this issue be location based? I am running Vivaldi from Cambodia.
-
@khlachhlat
I switch to Windows for a test but I cant reproduce it.
No idea why it happen for you except:
Do you use any third party anti virus software?
I had huge problems with AVAST on a friends PC, strange errors, lagging and others, for example.Cheers, mib
EDIT: I cant imagine it is a location problem. -
@mib2berlin I use no anti-virus software other than Windows Security. This computer has never had third-party anti-virus software installed in the past either. The only network controlling application that I own is Nord VPN, and I haven't run it while using Vivaldi.
-
Not location. I'm running from the US and having the same problem.
My Vivaldi is up to date. I'm running AVG Internet Security and Windows Internet Security. I have a Windows 10 laptop with the same antivirus programs running, and Vivaldi works fine there. On this Surface, running Windows 11, I'm having the issues.
I'm also not having issues with Chrome, FIrefox, or Edge on the Windows 11 machine. Only Vivaldi.
-
@cpav1130 Are you using AVG Tuneup on your machine that is having Vivaldi issues?
I use Tuneup, but none of the Anti-virus programs. -
Yes, I have Tuneup as well.
-
@cpav1130 On both of the devices? If it's only the device with the issue, we might have identified a possible cause.
-
Nope, it's on both. But I went ahead and restarted and disabled Tuneup and all of my Internet Security, then opened Vivaldi, opened the Bing web site, and started right-clicking on news articles. Sixteen opened, then the seventeenth and eighteenth gave dead birds.
So it looks like the antivirus and Tuneup weren't the culprits either.

@cpav1130 @KhlaChhlat
I test again, open bing.com, open 20+ tabs, close all. open another 20+ tabs, no dead bird.
Windows 11 Pro Version 10.0.22598 Build 22598 insider build.Is it maybe a GPU/driver issue?
Please try to disable hardware acceleration in Settings > Webpages
I donΒ΄t give up.Cheers, mib

Please try this morning's update, it fixex crashes. β https://vivaldi.com/blog/desktop/minor-update-five-5-2/

@doctorg
Hi, there are already on 5.2.2623.36 and it is a strange dead bird issue.Cheers, mib
-
I know only about dead bird pages when user have Windows 10 K/KN and the Windows Media Feature Pack is not up to date.
Do you use special New Tab Page setting or a extension?
Perhaps some extension causing a crash? -
@doctorg
Good morning, they are on clean installs.Cheers, mib
-
Installed the update. Still dead birds. I'm going to disable all of my extensions, but I did a clean install about 3 iterations back, and haven't re-activated a lot of them, so I don't have that many running. I have to restart Vivaldi, because I got a dead bird even trying to open the Extensions screen.
-
Disabled hardware acceleration and the one extension I had active (LastPass), restarted, browsed for a few minutes, dead birds.
Vivaldi opens to the Speed Dial page, and my home page is set to Bing.com, which it was prior to these issues starting.
-
Is there a developer mode or some kind of logging that we can turn on to try to see what Vivaldi is doing under the hood when it stops loading the pages?
-
Nevermind. I did find the Developer Tools but am not sure what I should be looking for. It doesn't appear that anything's written to the long on the original page when a link doesn't work, and I'm not able to open the console on the failed page.
-
Open error console and then press reload.
-
Thanks. It didn't result in anything that I could recognize as being related to the problems. I was hopeful at one point because it appeared to throw an error related to the Picture-in-Picture feature right before I got a dead bird, but I disabled that option and restarted, and the dead birds eventually came back.
