Bug: new tab opens in the wrong window
-
I had the same issue 2 versions ago, then I installed the latest 5.0.2497.48 (Stable channel) (64-bit) and the issue has been solved for me (win 10).

@prandur Perhaps the poor performance is caused by the way the browser is being used. As I said, I'm not experiencing any of this, despite using Vivaldi quite extensively. Though - on the other hand - I don't use too many extensions (usually I keep only 5-7 active at a time), and I don't open that many tabs (~70 at most, but usually between 20-30 in each browser). But there are many ways in which a browser can be clogged, like a poorly written website or extension, 3rd-party programs interfering, etc.
Anyway, in order to address the issue, a reliable method of reproducing it would have to be established first. I'll try asking the devs if it could be investigated, as it seems to be connected with the recent window-handling changes, but I can't promise if they'll be able to find the culprit with this little information about the issue.

@pafflick I've been having this issue for a while now, but never realized how inconsistently it happens until I purposefully tried to reproduce it. However, there is another way I see the issue occur aside from clicking the + for a new tab.
- From an active Vivaldi window use
Ctrl + n
to open a new window - Do NOT click on the new window. Just type any URL and hit Enter.
- The webpage opens in the previous Vivaldi window instead of the new window.
Honestly, even these steps don't reproduce the bug consistently, but - at least for me - they usually do. It seems like this is a problem with race conditions where the correct active window is not always set before the information is accessed. I should mention I'm running Vivaldi 5.0.2497.38 (Stable channel) stable (64-bit) in Ubuntu 20.04. Hope this helps because this bug is driving me bonkers.

Chiming in to say that I've been experiencing the same bug since December. It happens when I try to open a new tab in a vivaldi window while another vivaldi window is active.
I'm on 5.0.2497.48 and using Windows 10.
-
Easily (took me about 30 seconds) reproduced in versions 5.0.2497.38 (as on video) and on latest 5.0.2497.38. On win7, win8 and win10.
-
I've also been suffering from this issue and it's exactly as choipltd has described. I'm on win10.
-
@paolo-nicora That's not true... in the last couple of days I have it happening every time I create a new tab
-
100% reproducible on my company notebook and home strong desktop and Windows 10, doesn't matter which version. Just simple steps.
- Open first Vivaldi window
- File -> New Window
- Straight click on + in newly created window
New tab will be opened in currnet window, because + button doesn't activate window focus before it opens a new tab. It was fixed on some snapshot after v5 stable released, so for me its surprising that it wasn't patched into stable.
- Then click on second window to gain focus
- Click on + on first window, new tab will be opened in second window and not in first window
-
This issue has been fixed, but the fix hasn't been released yet, apparently. For a future reference, it's:
VB-85002 New tab can open the new tab in the wrong window in some cases
. There's no need for more reports at this time - we hope to release the patch in one of our future updates. -
@pafflick Is there a public roadmap? when is a new release planned?
-
@paolo-nicora No, there is no public roadmap, sorry.
-
The issue should be fixed in Vivaldi 5.1, which just got released.

I am still experiencing this issue on Vivaldi 5.1.2567.39 in Windows 8.1. Typically I have Gmail and another tab or two open in a private window and a host of tabs open in a non-private window. Randomly a new tab which I try to open in the non-private window will open in the private window. It never happened prior to the last couple of months but I've not found a path to replicate.
-
Confirm, problem still reproducing.

If I have 2 vivaldi windows open.
Clicking the new tab button in the window that does NOT have focus, opens a new tab in the window that does have focus, i.e. the other window, i.e. not the window I clicked the button in, i.e. it opens the new tab in the wrong window.
I find this behavior quite distracting and confusing, and then time consuming to fix. -
@mindspace I cannot reproduce this behaviour.
-
I'm still seeing this issue in 5.1.2567.49 with KDE on Xorg. (Fedora 35).
-
Hello, @mindspace, and welcome to our community!
I'm also unable to reproduce that issue, but frankly - I never was, despite many trials. I've merged your thread with the previous one. Could you please share more details about your Vivaldi version & OS, and what are the exact reproduction steps that are causing the issue in your case?
-
I have a very similar issue, and probably related, with Vivaldi 5.1.2567.49 (Stable channel) stable (64-bit) on Fedora 35, KDE Plasma on xorg.
The difference I'm experiencing is that I have a window (A) open, press CTRL+N to open a new window (B) but window B doesn't seem to have the focus even though I can type in its address bar. When I type in a URL or a search in the initial tab in window B and press enter it opens a new tab in window A and works from there. Window B is never useable so I can just close it.
It's gotten so bad that I've installed Chrome again and I'm preparing to switch back as Vivaldi is unusable as it is.
