Sync and Site Error: ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED (-105)
-
Hi, I'm new to the Vivaldi Community.
I've made the switch to Vivaldi for a month or so and so far, I'm impressed.
However, my experience has been impeded by a particular problem I haven't been able to solve since Day 1.I've been unable to log-in to my Vivaldi account in the browser, where upon attempting to do so will produce an "Unable to connect to Vivaldi.net as XXXXXXXXXX: ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED (-105)" error message.
When I tried to search for a fix to this issue, I tried to go into the forums and surprise surprise - I got yet another error code, this time, a "DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN" code.
Weirdly enough, I have Vivaldi installed on my laptop and those problems aren't present at all.
Anyone experienced this problem and/or solved it?

@megamivso Looks like your Windows, router or ISP has a domain resolving issue.
Do you use a different DNS sever, Proxy, VPN, etc. in Windows?
Perhaps there is a resolving issue over IPv6 or IPv4 protiocol?
Had you changed internal Vivaldi settings to run Secure DNS?
What happens after you tried to clear DNS cache in commandline withipconfig /flushdns
and start Vivaldi again?
What happens after you opened vivaldi://net-internals/#dns , hit "Clear Host Cache", restart Vivaldi and retry Sync?
What is shown if you run this in Command Line window
nslookup bifrost.vivaldi.net

I haven't been using a custom DNS server (such as Google's or Cloudflare's) for quite some time - if my memory serves me right - nor have I tried to change Vivaldi's settings for Secure DNS usage.
I've done a DNS flush, cleared Host Cache and restarted Vivaldi - to no avail.
Did the
nslookup bifrost.vivaldi.net
on cmd as well, gave me this screen:
Upon attempting to login, it still throws the same error:

@megamivso
.domain.name
should never be appended to a domain!
DNS settings, resolving and/or server on your side is broken.
On my Windows 11 all is fine.
T:\>nslookup bifrost.vivaldi.net Server: fritz.box Address: 192.168.***.*** Nicht autorisierende Antwort: Name: bifrost.vivaldi.net Address: 31.209.137.11 T:\> T:\>nslookup bifrost.vivaldi.net 1.1.1.1 Server: one.one.one.one Address: 1.1.1.1 Nicht autorisierende Antwort: Name: bifrost.vivaldi.net Address: 31.209.137.11 T:\>nslookup bifrost.vivaldi.net 8.8.8.8 Server: dns.google Address: 8.8.8.8 Nicht autorisierende Antwort: Name: bifrost.vivaldi.net Address: 31.209.137.11
Same on an other Linux PC:
test@pc1233:~$ nslookup bifrost.vivaldi.net Server: 192.168.1.1 Address: 192.168.1.1#53 Non-authoritative answer: Name: bifrost.vivaldi.net Address: 31.209.137.11
-
Works fine here also on Windows:
Non-authoritative answer: Name: bifrost.vivaldi.net Address: 31.209.137.11
Troubleshooting tip - you can choose what server to query to setting it after the host:
λ nslookup bifrost.vivaldi.net 1.1.1.1 Server: one.one.one.one Address: 1.1.1.1 Non-authoritative answer: Name: bifrost.vivaldi.net Address: 31.209.137.11 λ nslookup bifrost.vivaldi.net 8.8.8.8 Server: dns.google Address: 8.8.8.8 Non-authoritative answer: Name: bifrost.vivaldi.net Address: 31.209.137.11

@doctorg
I see.Anyways, after a quick run-through of all possible options, I've found that actually setting a DNS such as Google's 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 service solves it.
Thanks for the help, DoctorG and pathduck!

@megamivso See https://www.lifewire.com/free-and-public-dns-servers-2626062 for more open DNS servers.

@megamivso It's good, but you also need to investigate what caused the "UnKnown" DNS server giving you wrong IPs. Must be something on your system, possibly malware or something running on your system.
