Hey, @alexjak
It is very curious that as of the new update you have perceived that. However, small updates will probably continue to be released in the next few days to fix details. Still, I invite you to visit this page where a writer wrote about ways to further optimize the browser.
-
I just updated and vivaldi has been high CPU usage since. It also shows "Running mail filters..." in the status bar which is probably the issue. I have restarted it twice, sometimes the mail filters message doesn't show, but no matter what the CPU usage is very high.
-
I also have this issue since Version 5.
To Robbo's post: I have no mail filters set and don't get the "running mail filters ..." message in the status bar, but if I go to the 'Filters' category in the mail view, it says "loading selected view" (as if there would be something to load). Clicking on 'Filters' however doesn't trigger the issue (it just happens sometimes - seemingly randomly). Still, maybe it means something so I mention it here.
Also, CPU usage varies every time the issue occurs. Sometimes it's around 50% (on a laptop with an AMD Ryzen 5 4500U processor), sometimes (like in the last hour until I noticed a few minutes ago) it's only around 15%.
It's also a constant CPU usage (when it starts with 15% it stays at 15% for example). -
I forgot to mention the exact version of Vivaldi I'm using right now:
5.0.2497.28 (Stable channel) (64-Bit)
This latest update didn't resolve the issue however.
-
I just noticed something else about this issue: The constant CPU usage stops when I minimize the main Vivaldi window or have some other program maximized in front of Vivaldi.
But the constant CPU usage starts again when I pull up Vivaldi again from the taskbar / pull Vivaldi in front of the other program again.

I have the same problem. I do not use mail.

I've noticed that the issue causing the crash for me happens when watching YouTube videos. When viewing at any resolution above 720p60 the CPU usage increases incrementally.
720p60 CPU 5%
1080p60 CPU 18%
1440p60 CPU 48%
2160p60 cpu 97%
Any thing above 1080p60 and the browser becomes laggy or crashes altogether.
At this point I've locked my video resolution to 1080p60 to see if that stabilizes the browser.
This happens with and without Hardware Acceleration enabled. -
@TheUnwantedMan You had tried to start Vivaldi in command line with
"C:\Users\LOGINNAME\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\Application\vivaldi.exe" --disable-extensions
That will show if a extension cause high CPU usage.
-
@doctorg tried your command with extensions disabled and got the same results. Funny thing is that when I'm letting the video play while I type this the CPU drops to around 5-10%. But when I change back to the tab playing the video, the CPU jumps to 30%. This appears to be related to video playback, rather than an extension.

I wonder if Twitch streams could be causing an issue similar to the YouTube one described above.
-
I tested https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBsNvGyfM8Y
Oh my goodness, 380% CPU for one Youtube tab while playing 4k video. Bad.
I will check Chromium 96 now. //edit:Same bad CPU usage!

Let me try that and see what I can come up with. In the meantime I'm running Win 10 and this is what I'm finding in the Event Log.
Windows successfully diagnosed a low virtual memory condition. The following programs consumed the most virtual memory: vivaldi.exe (9448) consumed 823554048 bytes, bdservicehost.exe (1764) consumed 689233920 bytes, and RadeonSoftware.exe (6516) consumed 205942784 bytes. -

@theunwantedman Ouch, memory issue wit AMD Radeon driver?
Do you use latest driver from AMD website?
Or trouble with bitdefender? https://community.bitdefender.com/en/discussion/82368/my-bdservicehost-uses-too-much-of-my-cpu-and-memory-all-the-time-how-can-i-fix-it -
@doctorg yeah I'm hunting down all three of those issues now. Reimaged my machine and was reinstalling updating things until this started happening. I had first thought it was an issue with the Radeon Drivers or the Chipset and been looking into that when I found this forum about the errors I was seeing in the Event Log.

Heh I wasn't aware of this thread so I posted the same issue in a separate topic:
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/69900/latest-vivaldi-high-cpu-usage-is-it-just-me
I can confirm for me this issue only occurs on build 5.0.2497.28 (and higher) and reverting to 5.0.2497.24 fixes it.

So, apparently if you'd like a Vivaldi dev to respond and actually offer a solution to your issue, you just have to post your question on the Vivaldibrowser sub reddit:
"Do you watch videos or use audio? It might be the audio animation icon causing it and we have a fix for it. In the meantime, you can disable animations as a workaround."

@globalist How did you fixed it?
