vivaldi 4.3.2439.65 bypassing system DNS settings windows 10
-
can't set custom DoH on vivaldi (it won't let me use an IP) so i assumed it would inherit my system settings for DNS. it does not. i use pi-hole for my whole network. vivaldi is bypassing it.
i have
phishing and malware protection
DNS to help resolve navigation errors
block ads on abusive sites
all turned off and have tried playing with the tracker/ads settings.
i have twitter.com (along with many other sites) blocked network-wide.
vivaldi still loads it and its content.
windows does not as it is using my pi-hole as a DNS gatewayfirefox blocks it. why doesn't vivaldi? i have made the switch fully over the last month or so. this is worrying.
thanks. -
@lupinehorror See chrome://settings/security for settings of Secure DNS.

chrome://settings/security
hi.
yeah, thanks. tried that.tried http:// also and hostname in /etc/hosts (locally)
-
@lupinehorror But i guess 192.168.1.138 has a hostname/FQDN which is announced by DHCP.
Why do you fail to use it? DoH needs a SSL connection over HTTP.If you want to use regular DNS (tcp/udp Port 53) over a Pi-Hole you have to set a DNS server in your Windows network settings.

hi. thanks, again, for your reply.
i am using pi-hole and unbound and it works just fine for every device on my network. it just doesn't with vivaldi. pi-hole is reachable via pi.hole but this doesn't work either (should have mentioned that, sorry). DoH works using 1.1.1.1 as upstream.
firefox also works...just using the IP -
@lupinehorror I guess if DoH is on you Pi-Hole you can try this:
https://192.168.1.138/

sadly no joy with the chrome settings using https://192.168.1.138
Please verify that this is a valid provider or try again later
my concern is that vivaldi isn't using system DNS. if it isn't using that then what is it using? dig and nslookup result in 0.0.0.0 on this machine for the domain mentioned above. vivaldi happily loads it.

- Had you checked which settings are used on your Windows? See
ipconfig /all
- And what is returned by your Pi-Hole in case of blocked IPs/Domains?

@doctorg
ipconfig /all

192.168.1.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.138192.168.1.1 is also using 192.168.1.138 for DNS
here pi-hole is blocking said domain when i use firefox

@lupinehorror Try to clear Vivaldi's internal DNS cache at chrome://net-internals/#dns
-
@DoctorG will give that a go. don't have further testing time today. i appreciate your input and all suggestions. will report back.
-
@lupinehorror DoH works for me with Bind 9.17 on my development server.
I can not tell why your settings fail. -
@doctorg
nor can iCmder:
ping twitter.com
Ping request could not find host twitter.com. Please check the name and try again.WSL:

@lupinehorror Have you checked your Settings → Privacy if you use Google Services DNS?
-
@doctorg yup, thanks. first thing i did when i returned to vivaldi.
-
I can tell on Windows 11 with Vivaldi 4.3.2439.65 and set a non-existing DNS (like 127.0.0.1, ::1 or other nonexisting in my LAN netrange) with netsh, i can not connect to any host, Vivaldi tells unresolvable and that is correct. Proofs for me Vivaldi can not bypass the system DNS.
Please check Troubleshooting issues in Guest Window and a fresh test profile.
I give up in debugging your Windows 10.
