Real estate websites (some) - Google streetview not functioning correctly
-
Forum/Help:
I use one of the most recent versions of Vivaldi (4.3.2439.65 Stable). I have had this version for a few weeks, but I am not sure if the problem I am about to describe started when I upgraded to this version - but the timing is definitely close.
I visit several of the major real estate websites daily (Redfin, Realtor(dot)com,. Zillow, etc.). Normally, on most of these sites you can click an icon to see a (Google maps) street view of the house (IF Google maps has one for that street) and also view a map of the area. Normally both of these features work fine in ALL of the browsers I use (Vivaldi, Opera, Chrome).
A few weeks ago a problem started (ONLY happens with Vivaldi -- Chrome and Opera work still work fine for this issue) where I click on streetview while looking at a house and the street view does appear - but only SOME of the functions work. I can click the arrows to move up or down the street but that is all it allows. Normally, I can use my mouse to zoom in and out on the street and also rotate around to see other parts of the street, etc.
Also, in map view - I can still click on the + or - to make the map larger or smaller, but I cannot use the mouse to zoom or rotate the map like it normally would allow.
I have tested this by actually using the Google maps website and everything works fine. It ONLY happens when using the street view or maps view that the real estate website provides. It happens with a few but it definitely happens the most with the Redfin real estate site.
Still, these street view and map view features on these various real estate websites work fine in Chrome and Opera.
From reading some troubleshooting on a Vivaldi website - I took the advice given and tested by opening Vivaldi with a Guest profile so that NONE of my own extensions would load (*I have over 80 extensions). RESULT: The real estate websites worked fine - all the functionality of the maps and streetviews worked.
Now, I updated ALL of my extensions and started disabling them one by one, and tested the Redfin website. I started with extensions that would likely be the cause of this type of issue - ad blockers, popup blockers, overlay removers, etc. I disabled the extension and then cleared cache and reloaded the website each time.
The protection / security extensions were not the cause, still had the problem. I went through most (not every single one) of my normal extensions (such as Cache/History cleaner, reminder and alarm extensions, note extensions, tab management extensions, etc.). Disabling these did not resolve the issue.
What I want to ask here are two questions:
-
If anyone has seen this type of thing and could it simply be related to the LATEST version of Chromium that this version came with (know that issues caused by Chromium are often fixed when you get the NEXT version of Chromium).
-
I tested all of the extensions that might have LIKELY been a cause for this type of issue, and I tested the extensions I had installed (very few) in the past 2 months. The extensions I did NOT test were ones that I have used for years (example, Session Buddy, OneTab) and those that have large user followings and have been around for years (again, Session Buddy, Pi Reminder, Just Read).
Does anyone think that these more harmless extensions could be causing this issue? (If yes - remember, I do have these same extensions in Opera and Chrome - and the problem does not happen with these browsers).
Thank you for any advice / feedback
Greg

@gcx302 Extensions interact differently with Vivaldi in many cases than they do with other browsers, because Vivaldi's User Interface is completely alien to Chromium, while the UI's of the others use native elements (it's why Vivaldi can develop so fast with such a small crew, and be so customizable). So how an extension affects other browsers should not be assumed to relate in any way to Vivaldi.
Also, many extensions do not entirely go away when you "disable" them. Their fingers are in the pie in the background. They have to literally be removed, or you nave to use a guest profile to eliminate their effects. To test with a guest profile might be your first strategy.
Are you sure Realtor(dot)com has this problem? If so, I can test it and that may provide some more info.

Ayespy - Thank you for the insight, I do see your point. For most of my career (IT) I used and fumbled around with Firefox and Chrome (hardly ever used IE, could not stand it). About the past 8 years or so I grew tired of what Firefox and Chrome evolved into - so I started testing out and working with many of the non main stream browsers (too many to mention all, but for example, Cyberfox, Maxthon, PaleMoon, etc.).
I settled on Opera and Vivaldi a few years ago. While they both have many plusses, they always seem to develop their own set of "quirks" over time. Sometimes I can live with these, sometimes not. When I cannot, I switch to the other browser for a period of time as my "go-to". I may trial a new browser soon just to have a third go-to in the mix.
I know that my post was long-winded, but in it I mentioned that I already tested as Guest and everything was fine - NO problems at all, so that pretty much guarantees that one (or more ?) of my extensions is the cause of this problem.
I had a thought that simply disabling the extensions might not be enough - but you have confirmed this, so thank you.
I am not going to remove and reinstall over 80 extensions -- but I can definitely try doing this with about 10 or so of the extensions I think might be the likely culprit.
Thanks again for your observations and help.
