History list has no entries when certain browser windows are open
-
Hi, im new here and have a possible bug to report that I noticed since I began using Vivaldi a few weeks ago. I searched for something similar in the forums but haven't found anything.
--
When a certain type of browser window (I don't know how it's called and will give an example below) is open in the background, the history list of any tab opened afterwards will not show any entries when I right-click on the 'Back' or 'Next' button. I can go back and forth by simply left-clicking (so the entries are there), it just won't show the list.
As an example for the type of window I'm talking about I used the website of the british drum&bass radio station Bassdrive. In case anyone wants to use this website to test if the error occurs, here is the link (https://www.bassdrive.com) and a description of what to click on:
On the top right of the page, click on 'TUNE IN'. That will open the Player window (music won't start playing at that point)
This is the Player window, which is of the type that produces the error (at least for me):
With this window open in the background, the history list of a newly opened tab (in which I navigated around the Vivaldi forums a bit) looks like this:
When I close the Bassdrive player window, the 'Back' and 'Next' buttons are both greyed out, but I can use other means to go to a previous page (Backspace for example) and then the buttons are not greyed out any longer and the history list will show again:
Also, I think the history lists of already open tabs are affected too. There I can see the history list (which is also updated correctly with new entries) but nothing happens when I left-click on an entry.
Can anyone reproduce this error?

I forgot to say that this ... let's call it 'phenomenon' ... really can be a problem sometimes.
Like, when I'm logged in to my universities' server, there's always a small window of that type with a logout link open in the background. So, for example, when I'm doing research I'm unable to directly go back to a specific search result in the history of a tab or even to just see all the words or phrases I searched for (e.g. with Google Scholar) when I forgot what I already searched for. I would have to go back one by one all the time. Instead, with Vivaldi I tend to just open a new tab and start a new search there, which just clutters up my tab bar at some point
That becomes quite annoying, especially with multiple tabs.So I really would like to know if this is an actual bug in Vivaldi (and report it as such) or something on my side.

@3gg3r The Tune In link is hard-wired to open a new window (i.e. a new tab resized to a popup window), so it has no back/forward history.

I think you misunderstood. The point was that as long as the popup window is open, new tabs opened in the main browser window will not show a history list (and already open tabs will show it but nothing happens when you click on an entry). At least that's what Vivaldi is doing on my computer.
-
@3gg3r I tried this, but the tab I checked "history" on (which only has "back history") worked OK.
Note: I tried with Settings/Appearance - Open pop-ups in Tabs Active
and again when not active.Perhaps you could check again using Guest Profile?
-
@3gg3r As long as the popup window has focus, there is no history list.
I can move the popup window to my secondary monitor so that I can still see it while opening the history list on the main tab. If you try that on a single monitor, the popup window will be hidden behind the active window.

Ah, interesting. I checked it with 'Open pop-ups in Tabs' active and now I can access the history lists in tabs opened after that (after navigating around some website of course).
When I disable the 'Open pop-ups in Tabs'-Setting again, and open the Bassdrive player in a pop-up window, the history lists stop working again.
I also tested it with a guest profile. No difference for me.

I'm still not sure what you're getting at. I hope we're not talking past each other.
I have only one monitor, but it makes no difference for me if the pop-up window is in the background behind the maximized main window or if I place them beside each other.
I can also still see the history lists of the tabs that were open before I open the pop-up window (I assume that the tab you tested it on in the image you posted was already open before you clicked on 'Tune in').
When I open a new tab after the pop-up window is already open, go to some website and navigate around it a bit to generate a history list for that new tab and then try to access its history list by right-clicking (or holding left-click), that's where I don't see any entries (although I can still go back and forward one at a time). When I close the pop-up window, the history list will finally show up. -
- If I open your link: https://www.bassdrive.com/ in a new tab, it has no back history (no surprise there).
- If I navigate in that tab, e.g. to Tunes, Booking, Store, etc., then the history appears.
- If I open a New Popup Window from the Tune In link, the new window has no history (no surprise there).
- If I close the popup window, the history on the https://www.bassdrive.com/ tab is still present (as expected).
No sign of any bugs here.

What I mean is:
Step 1: Go to Bassdrive.com and click on Tune In, which opens the pop-up window.
Step 2: Open a new tab in the main window, then go to some website in that new tab (e.g. search something on Google).
Step 3: See if you can access the history list in that tab (not the tab that is still on Bassdrive.com)I can't see the history list in that new tab (at least with the 'Open pop-ups in Tabs' setting turned off).

When I open a new tab after the pop-up window is already open
That's new information (for me anyway), so I tried again.
a) Turn off "Open Popups in Tab"
b) Open link (https://www.bassdrive.com) in a new tab, click on 'TUNE IN'. Popup window appears.
c) Leave popup window open and return to main window.
d) Open new tab from Startpage (i.e. my Bookmarks) (e.g. Youtube)
e) Navigate in (the new) Youtube tab to generate history
f) In (the new) Youtube tab, click and hold "Back arrow" to display history.History shows correctly for me!?
Is there something else I have missed?

You haven't missed anything, that's exactly the procedure I mean. If I do that, the history list of the new tab doesn't show up (for me it looks like in the third and fourth image in my original post -> note that in the third image the 'Back' arrow isn't greyed out so there would have to be a history list, but it only shows 'Customize').
So what I take from this is that:
- The problem seems to be on my side (although I have no idea what the cause might be)
- I have to be clearer in my wording (I'm not a native english speaker)
- Turning on the 'Open pop-ups in Tabs' setting resolves the issue for me (at least it's a workaround). -> Thank you for that!

Remember I'm on Linux; although I doubt this problem would be O.S. specific.
I have to be clearer in my wording (I'm not a native english speaker)
The English was fine, it was the "reproduction steps" that were incomplete/unclear.

An acceptable workaround is better than nothing
However, others should check if they can reproduce in case there is an actual here

Yeah, makes sense. Regardless, since I forgot to mention the Vivaldi version and OS I'm using, here's the info on that (just in case):
Vivaldi: 4.3.2439.63 (Stable channel) (64-Bit)
OS: Windows 10 Version 20H2 (Build 19042.1288)Regarding the Vivaldi version, the issue was already there in the 3 or 4 previous versions (I started using Vivaldi at some point in september).

Yeah, I think I stick to the 'list of steps' approach from now on. That seems to have got the information across best
However, others should check if they can reproduce in case there is an actual here
Definitely Windows users. Although, maybe the fact that I'm still using 20H2 has something to do with it (I always wait at least 6 months before installing new feature updates).
