Synology Notes Station Extension loses settings
-
Hi,
I´m using the Notes Station of Synology, a NAS based service similar to OneNote or EverNote.
There is an web clipper extension on Chrome webstore: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/synology-web-clipper/pcfbfimijgibligmbglggnbiobgjgmbkIn original Chrome and the new Edge browsers everything works fine, but with Vivaldi Browser (4.2.2406.54 on Windows 10 2009 Build 19043.1237) the extension frequently loses their settings and I have to sign in every time I want to clip a web page.
Maybe it´s a question of architecural deviations to original Chrome, maybe a but in Vivaldi, but maybe there is any Vivaldi setting influencing this extension which I could change?
Kind regards,
Karsten -
@kt1 I also have a Synology, so I have now installed the Note Station app plus the web clipper extension to test / reproduce this this. I just did the installation, so no other news so far. Ideally if you could give me stepwise instructions how to reproduce the issue as you see it, that would be appreciated to get faster results.
(EDIT): do you connect through your LAN with an IP, or through a quickconnect ID?

Hi, thanks for your reply.
After providing login data including 2-Factor-TOTP, the extension is logged in and works fine. For a while. Later, after clicking the extension button, not the usual menu is shown, but it pops up for a millisecond and after that I´m logged out and the extensions login form requires a new authentication.
The problem seems only to occur with Vivaldi, while with Firefox, Chrome, Edge it seems to work fine.
I have no idea how long it works before the error occurs, maybe it´s a few hours or a few days.In my opinion it could be related to the 2FA, which is enabled for my account. Seems that the login token is cached for a while and later a new (automated) login fails because of expired token/credentials. Since I sign in in all browsers with the same Synology account, there might be a difference in handling the extensions' credentials ...
Up to now I had no chance to test with different computers. I tried several other things, disabled other extensions etc., and now I configured a new subdomain just for Note Station (before I provided the QuickConnect ID or the global domain of my Disk Station). Maybe that helps, but since I did this yesterday, I have to check ...
A bit difficult to say if it´s really a Vivaldi problem. Since I found no other posts on the forum related to this topie, either nobody uses Note Station (although it´s really an alternative to EverNote oder OneNote!), or I´m the only one with this issue -
@kt1 Some more questions:
- Which Synology DMS version
- Which Synology Notes version
- Which Vivaldi version
- Do you block ads/tracking
- Do you use privacy extensions
- Do you block Third Party Cookies
- Did you tried with a fresh Vivaldi profile
-
@kt1 ok so I only use my Synology as Backup and Photo Vault for simple home use, I have little experience with remote connections - I have the android DS Note and photo apps working but have so far failed to connect the webclipper extension with the quickconnect ID. I also have zero experience with 2FA for the synology. I'll keep running the web clipper app with my local ip with https- if that never logs off, then we can at least narrow it down to the external connection ....
Maybe you can find a fellow Vivaldian on the synology forum?
Just to have it said: Vivaldi also has a notes feature, but you probably know and think it's too rudimentary compared to Note Station
... also sadly note station does not work too well in the Vivaldi panel, because the note preview is always to the side of the note list...
Oh, and by the way: welcome to the forum!

DSM 7.0-41890
Note Station 2.6.0.2413
Vivaldi 4.2.2406.54 (Stable channel) (32-Bit)
Ad Blocker: uBlock Origin, but disabled for local IPs and my Synology domains. Also installed on Edge and Chrome.
No other privacy extensions.
Third party cookies blocked, but for my Synology domains disabled
Up to now not tried with a fresh profile, but good idea!Thank you!

Thanks, up to now I just read in the forum. Since a few months Vivaldi is my first choice for web browser, maybe I could be more active here.
Vivaldi Notes is a nice function, but Synology Note Station I use for clipping whole web sites, as a knowledge base including sharing articles with other people. Vivaldi seems to be a great thing for quick text-based notes. So that´s another use case.
I think we have to watch whether you are logged off after a while, too, and I´ll test with a fresh Vivaldi profile. And I try to stay logged in with the Note Station subdomain instead of the global DSM web interface URL.

@kt1 I forgot to ask something (i need more
):
Which auth used in Synology, the installed OAuth service? -
@doctorg
OAuth seems to be installed, but I cannot remember to have it used already.
The web clipper browser extension asks for credentials, i.e. server name (my Synology's subdomain), user name, password and in a second step the 6-digit TOTP code. After that I´m logged in, and in opposite to Chrome and Edge, it seems that Vivaldi loses this information frequently and I get logged out and have to provide the credentials again. -

yeah, these NAS Apps are what Opera Unite could have been (but the world was not ready in 2009).
@DoctorG as usual you are much better at understanding the technical stuff, but please both feel free to ask me to test some setup with my synology to confirm / find root causes. I see this as an opportunity to learn a bit more about my Synology NAS.
EDIT: @kt1 could you also set up a user with limited rights to access your note station for someone on the vivaldi team (don't share the credentials in the forum, obviously)?

Ouch, a hell of apps, 2FA works only with a phone!? I am not allowed this on my office Android. I can not test with TOTP.
Hardware TOTP tokens to authenticate not supported!?Hmmm, NItrokey and Yubico should work but how to add to Synology?
-
@doctorg
You can configure TOTP as 2nd factor for the whole account and have to provide it at logon on each new device (in the app and/or webinterface). There is an option to trust the device, so you do not have to provide it at each login. And sometimes there is an option to stay logged in, so you do not have to provide the credentials on every use.
Yubikey etc. I didn´t try. -
@wildente
I have to check - there are some services allowed for the whole group "users" including shared folders, I´m not sure if I´m able to restrict the access to the relevant functions. -
@doctorg Can not test without hardware token as Google or MS Authenticator is not safe (restrictions at office).
-
@doctorg
In my opinion that will not be necessary, since I also do not use a hardware token. -
no disconnects so far on my note station extension. So either it's the external connection or the 2FA.
-
@wildente
Okay, great - thank you! Meanwhile I had one disconnect on Vivaldi, while Edge still stays connected/logged in.
But it´s really difficult to reproduce, there are many possible factors ...
Thanks for your support!I think I need to keep watching it and also should ask in the Synology Forum. If anyone has the same problem, let me know.

A small update 8 days later: everything fine, no further issues, still logged in with Notes Station extension on Vivaldi.
Either the recent Vivaldi update did the trick, or it was the change from QuickConnect-ID to my external domain ... -

Congrats.
Thanks for the feedback.
