CPU pegging in Ubuntu 20.04
-
Hi. I'm running Vivaldi 4.2.2406.48 (Stable channel) stable (64-bit) on Ubuntu 20.04.
I have noticed the CPU pegging one (or more) of the 12 threads on my Intel i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20GHz, occassionally. Usually once per session.
I have two windows open and I normally run 700+ tabs (usually 2x that many with all of my windows open) without a hitch on Ubuntu 16.04 with an earlier version of Vivaldi Snapshot. I know that's comparing apples to oranges, but I've been doing this for 2+ years.
Starting yesterday (and continuing today with the new stable version,) my threads start pegging (around 2 or 3, without ceasing) occasionally. I have to go into htop and end the Vivaldi session process after selecting Vivaldi -> Exit.
To help you diagnose, I noticed the last time I kill the PID that there was a remaining PID for Vivaldi. I killed it and the pegging stopped. The next time it happened, I pinpointed that PID in htop and only killed it. That stopped the peggingI don't have a screenshot of when it was pegging the thread, but here is the culprit.
/opt/vivaldi/vivaldi-bin --newwindow --enable-crashpad.
It looks like a process that's started to create a new window. The "sub-process" ThreadPoolForeg was the only one pegging at the 100% percent.
I know this is a spotty account, but maybe it will help someone else that has this issue.
Thanks for the years of great software. Your efforts are appreciated!

I'm running Vivaldi on Linux Mint and this morning it upgraded Vivaldi to 4.2.2406.48 (Stable channel) stable (64-bit)
Ever since the update I can see that Vivaldi is constantly using about 12% of my total CPU (according to conkey), even when the browser is sitting idle. This is with just 6 tabs open. I only really noticed because the fan on my Intel NUC has been constantly on, something that never happens when I'm just using Vivaldi.
top shows the following:
Something has definitely changed in Vivaldi with this latest version.

This is an issue that occurs only on updates. I believe it is a known issue and is being worked on.
As mentioned by @jetimms close vivaldi. Kill any remaining vivaldi-bin processes, which should stop the 100% CPU usage. Then restart Vivaldi, and it should be fine (until you update again).

@ugly I did as you suggested and that has fixed the problem. Thanks!

Glad to hear it. Until the issue is fixed, one workaround is to make sure you close Vivaldi before you update. The issue only occurs if Vivaldi is running while you update.

Good to know about workaround. I'll remember to do that on the next update. Thanks!

Yup I think that was my problem, I remember having Vivaldi open while installing the latest update. I'll take your advice and ensure it's not running when I update in future. Thanks again!
