Vivaldi update mixed up Windows 10 file associations
-
I updated to version Vivaldi 4.1.2369.11 (Stable channel) yesterday and after that update, suddenly Windows 10 file associations were screwed up?
A JPG file I open standard with IrfanView but now after the Vivaldi update, I suddenly got the window with the question with what app I wanted to open it? In that list was now also Vivaldi. I did choose IrfanView again and it was fixed.
But now with JPG (and other files), when I right-click on it and choose "Open With ... ", Vivaldi is also in that shortlist.
Even with exotic files like FITS (image file for astrophotographs), Vivaldi is suddenly in the "Open with ..." short list.
I got all file associations now back to the normal apps and not Vivaldi.
But how do I remove Vivaldi from the Windows 10 right-click menu? It's now in all kind of files when right clicked and of course that totally useless.
This on Windows 10 20H2 19042.1110.
Just in case here a screenshot. For those wondering: it's Dutch -
@menno555 file types is sometimes broken by Windows itself.
Vivaldi does not change/set a file type fir image FITS. -
Here some more proof.
After the Vivaldi update, Vivaldi want to associate also with RAR-files? I wanted to open a RAR file which was associated with WinRAR just fine. And now I get this, see screenshot.
Translation: "How do you want to open this file?" and then it gives Vivaldi as new option to open RAR?Windows 10 does this not by itself, Windows reacts on Vivaldi giving the option to open RAR files (which of course is utterly useless.)
But now it's also in the right-click option as "Open with ..." like in the first screenshot but now for compressed files.
So how do I get rit of this? -
@menno555 I'm pretty sure Vivaldi doesn't do that on update. Maybe on a fresh install, but I've never seen it happen. My experience is that once a program has been used once to open a file, it will show in the "Other apps" list.
Not really sure if there's an easy way to fix whatever has happened on your system, but try this tool:
https://defaultprogramseditor.comYou will need to go through each file extensions though, so yeah a PITA...

File type associations in Windows, especially 10 is really obscure in the details of how it works...

@menno555 Check Windows regsitry with Regedit
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Clients\StartMenuInternet
Look for for key Vivaldi
These two show what Vivaldi really can open:
Capabilities\FileAssociations
Capabilities\URLAssociationsSometimes Windows mangles file type associations. Perhaps a broken regsitry.
But such never happened for me after Vivaldi updates. -
@Pathduck and @DoctorG
Thanks for the tips.
For me it's also the first time, never encountered something like this. Not with Vivaldi or other program.
All I know is that this happend right after the Vivaldi update to 4.1.2369.11 and then it started to happen.Edit
Checking now in the registry and Vivaldi is in almost every file type for the "Open with ..." option. Removing that all now except the types Vivaldi is for.
But when checking on Vivaldi itself and what its associated with, that all is normal. -
@menno555 As i told you, Vivaldi installer/updater does not register for so many file types.
If that would be, our internal and external testers should have reported such broken installation immediately. -
